I'm a beginner too, though you play that so well, I think I'm more so than you.. ha ha ha, thanks for the cool vid, That was pretty exciting to see. And the close up with your fingers on the fretboard is extremely extremely helpful. You're awesome (and cute). ha ha, thanks again!
Nice job! I especially liked the slow close-ups to see just what you are doing.
One point: On the first "classic" (Lester Flatt) G run, try adding a "D' (on the open D sting) just before the final "G" note is played -- it sounds more fluid (although a bit harder).
After playing classical and shred for years, it'snice to see this video. I wouldn't have thought of adding the open A and Bb into the run, and the bluesy/blue grass riff I'm usinging already. You rock. Post more.
It went once around the globe with me and had to sustain all kinds of weather, airplanes and what not, in a torn up soft case... not once did she let me down and it just seems like she sounds better every day...
that piece of wood is worth every penny I paid for it and far more...
You explained it well, I was able to copy the run after a few tries. I'm working on getting out of my pentatonic blues rut, this helped. I like the way you kept things to just a few simple runs, I thinks its best to learn in small steps.
i am a wanna be you can flat play that guitar, your real good its really hard to learn all of them rhytm licks and then put them in timing to the song. you do that really well
Myself and a few friends have a small independent jam band. Although the covers we do are all over the map, my brother and I were both trained in bluegrass picking by our father, who passed away in 2003. The licks you are teaching here are spot-on just like the ones dad taught. A great post!
Is it just my poor sense of time, or are you playing about ten times faster than anyone a true beginner? lol
Seriously you are amazingly fluid with your runs. Like some of the best bluegrass banjo players you play without a hitch at a speed almost faster than I can listen.
A beginner for longer than you've been alive I doubt that I'll ever match your speed and grace.
I wonder whether my Blueridge (BR-160A-2) would sound better with you playing it. I'm guessing it would.
You said you are pretty much a beginner on the guitar, then I would love to see you play when you can play above this level. I think you are just fabulous on the guitar. If you are a beginner on this, well you would need ear plugs to listen to me.
I am printing these licks out so I can gradually get to do them, and after that I will try to do them along with you in those sporatic runs you do on here. This really helps me out.
These are excellent!, however I am a total beginner and I was wondering if you could attach tabs to your instructional videos. They would help me tremendously...I have just started at the age of 67 and totally love Bluegrass, religious and Gaelic music...Make more and keep it up...Think of possibly a simple web site for the videos and tabs...Dick Butz
It sounds great, but you didn't teach anyone how to make the first G-run. A viewer can not tell which strings you are plucking (a very common problem with these type videos). I can only see your left hand, but I do not know what, if any, strings that are plucked "OPEN". A rank beginner such as myself is not helped much when key details are omitted. You SOUNDED great though. Maybe show the tabulation next time while you are doing the demo would help.
@TheArWhistler everything comes with practice. this video, having a very nice left hand closeup, is perfect to practice your ability to play by ear or by watching. these abilities dont come on there own
beginner my behind! awesome - my six year old girl wants to play the guitar so she has watched this a few times - (her short stubby fingers have a hard time :)
Ah! This is exactly what I'm looking for. A beginner here aswell. Cool licks which are easy enough. I like also how you don't hold our hand all the way by going "2nd string, 1st fret... 2nd string 2nd fret" etc. Because I think doing some by ear is good practice :)
Well, can I say that you're making the basic mistake of playing G by playing the bass G with your 2nd finger. If you play the first inversion of G using the 3rd finger on the G string 3rd fret, 2nd finger on the 5th string 2nd fret, then your pinky on the 1st string 3rd fret, you can do runs a lot smoother cos you have no "hand" change, just a movement of the fingers.
these 3 runs are great i would like to hear you cut loose on that cannon sometime four years ago i bought a 2nd hand br 160 for 425.00 with good case i did some upgradeing at the bridge and put a set of grover gold button tuneing machines on it i just had small fret job done it is now a great rosewood dread it could only have ben better if it had had a bear claw spruce sound board on it

When you are picking them notes are you picking them down and up on each note. For eg: Do you pick the same note twice before moving to the next one.
If there is anything that may help is to show your picking hand moreso along with the chords.
For some reason I am having a battle trying to sort it out.
