I had a 75, my first Trans AM, Silver, black int, 400 auto, I removed the catalyst and installed the dual system from the factory, recurved the distributor and adjusted the Quadrajet carb, it ran like a bandit and handled incredably well on radials, led to my current 71' TA and 70' GTO, both with Ram Air. Love Gert Frobe fron Goldfinger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The car the Russians are driving is a British car, a Rover V8. It had full independent suspension (the Pontiac didn't) disc-brakes all round (Pontiac didn't) full leather interior as standard (the pontiac didn't) was four-door and seated four adults comfortably (the Pontiac couldn't) it could out-accelerate the Pontiac, out-corner the Pontiac and returned 20 MPG, (the Pontiac returned 6 MPG at best) I like the old firebirds a lot but let's not resort to lies eh?
I graduated high school in 1979, this one rich kid's dad bought him a brand new 1979 Trans Am. That thing was top of the line, it had real leather seats and at least a 400 cu. in. motor. He took me for a ride in it and when he mashed the gas it sucked me down in the seat more than any car I've ever rode in.
go check out my restoration hopefully will be completely done by december 1 lots of work time and money went in to this car you can view the progress at ytwoktt on you tube thanks
gm needs ads like this again... volkswagen ads are hillarious... unfortunately their cars suck. GM... BRING BACK THE GOOD ADS, AND THE CARS THAT ARE EVEN BETTER!
@MrErlingT . may very well be a 3500, and yes, that little 215 cu.in alum engine is a GM unit. I have a 3500s. Still not sure why that would be a Russian spy car. Advertising rarely is realistic. Nice to see any classic car commercials though. :)
Wasn't the guy on the commercial a young David Hasselhoff who would actually ironically drove the 3rd generation Trans Am on Knight Rider 7 years later?
This was the Trans Am year that Ponch bought for like 100 bucks on that episode of CHiPs because the hood was vabdalized and the rich owner didnt want it anymore..anyone remember that?
I purchased a new one on 01/02/75 - it was silver with the burgundy interior, 400cid, 4spd, Rally II wheels and, of course, the Firechicken on the hood. One of my favorite cars (behind my '70 442 convertible!).
It had 5 miles on it one day #1 and cost me exactly $5011 - brand new!
1975 was the worst year for any car as far as performance goes!!! Thats when they really choked off the horsepower and the introduction of catalytic converters. The trans am struggled to get even 200 horsepower with the 455 at least they still looked fast!!!! The 1977 models were ran better with the 400.They were stronger as far as performance goes and them and the camaro had record sales in the late 70's for some reason.
corvette also had it greatest sales in 78-79. i know smokey and the badit doubled trans am sales..... most people were unaware pontiac made a 400ci firebird. i think smokey and the bandit may have effected chevy sportcar sales also. chevys had 350's. ford's mustang was funky/small and had 13" wheels not to mention the 302 was VERY weak at that time. mopar had no v8 sportcar at all.
if u wanted to go fast it was pontiac or chevy in the late 70's early 80's
My first car was a 79 berlinetta with a 2bl 305 and t tops with leather and pwr. I thought I was the shit but it actually was slow as snail shit but I do miss her tho
@1978mtb You're correct, a lot of people think hp plummeted in 1972, but that was only because of the change to net hp. Power didn't really drop for all engines across the line by a large amount until 1975. A 200 hp 1975 455 would likely be rated 260-295 hp before 1972.
im hinting at the fact that you are spelling FIREBIRD WRONG
damn man...this is why we cant have nice things, and the "trans am" part was because of a race that the firebirds raced in, the nickname trans am stuck with the car and there was a whole big thing about infringement and what not, so if i remember right, pontiac ended up buying the name...it wasnt original dumbass
The guy that is in the passenger seat of the bad guy's car is none other that Gert Frobe aka Auric Goldfinger of the 1964 James Bond 007 movie "Goldfinger".
GM should do ads like this today, they would triple their market share. This ad is awesome.
Compare to stuff today: "our car is very safe. if you crash into something onstar will save you. buy our car because it is very quiet, has a very smooth ride and we have 70 vehicles that get 30 mpg or more." BAAAAAARRRRRFFFFF I change the radio station. Today's ads suck.
Their ads today are more like, "Our cars are just as good as the imports, honest! And our company will NOT go bankrupt in a few days! PLEASE buy our cars! Or, or you're not a REAL American!"
I have the bad luck to have a 15 year old Buick, which sucks because it is slow. But at least back in '95 they put padding on the seats. Seems like all new cars today have heated plywood bucket seats.
Did you see Ford's ad talking about they're now equal in quality to Toyota? It's like forget that stuff we've been making for 30 something years, that was some shit, we have good stuff now.
the rover v-8 was the same v-8 as the 1961-1962 buick special. so the engine in the rover was made by the same people that made the firebird. plus in 1975 the rover had no resale value.

Not insulting the car but that does kinda look like a russian lada and in the 70s not many americans would have known the difference. I'm sure its way more powerful,Built better and handles better than any commie peoples car.
The passenger in the Firebird is Peter Brown, who starred in the TV westerns
The Lawman, from the late 50's, and Laredo, from the 60's. Can't really get a

The reason the Camaro sold well in the late 70s was because they came out with the soft-nose front end and it looked great!
Combined with the fender air extractors and front air dam on the Z/28, it "looked" like it's big sister, the Trans Am.
The '79 Camaro was the best year ever for F-body Chevys.
