I recently saw the episode of The Venture Brothers where the Monarch says the line "I'll have a fun-time making sunshine on a stick!" and for days I've been thinking "Where have I heard that before? Wasn't that from a commercial in the 70's?"
It's a good thing I live in the future with Google and stuff, or that would have been driving me crazy for years.
"whatever turns you on" - - it's just an expression that people (and timer) used at the time. it's not as if use of the phrase marks someone as some kind sexual predator. it's like some white kids nowadays call each other by the n-word, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're racist.
Man, as a kid in the 1970s (I was born in 1969) I used to watch this, among the other "Timer" PSAs, on Saturday mornings. Brings back fond, nostalgic memories of me sitting in front of the living room 25 inch color tv (the only tv we had in the house. Unlike today where people practically have a tv in each and every room) watching my favorite Saturday morning cartoons while eating bowl after bowl of my favorite breakfast cereals. The 1970s really was the golden age of saturday morning cartoons.
i remember in the movie Back to School, the lady English professor said "whatever turns you on" to the classroom after Rodney Dangerfield screamed out "yes! yeeesss! YYYEEESSSSS!!!!"
OMG I remember this!!! I actually tried to make these things with apple juice, but the toothpicks never wanted to stay in. Almost impossible to twist the tray and pull the darn things out without the toothpick falling out.
But i don't remember him saying : "or whatever turns you on" !!! LOL! Can any of you imagine saying that to your toddlers today?? ...."Hey little Suzie - you can have some goldfish, some animal crackers, OR WHATEVER TURNS YOU ON" !!!
xD "or whatever turns ou on" and geeks are the only kind of people that actually contrubute to society. GEEKS AND EMOS ARE BETTER THAN YOU JOCKS AND PRISSES
I'm 42 and watched this in the early 70s. I can still sing all these by heart as well as Schoolhouse Rock. I loved them so much that I would play during the cartoons and come out to watch these between shows.(Unless it was a Sid and Mart Krofft show) I even sang the Preamble in high school instead of reciting it fo a grade. I haven't watched any of these in eons and I still can.
This is from my generation of sitting in front of the TV on Saturday mornings.Kids in general were more active even in the early 80's but the irony is we weren't coherent about what we were eating. The word cholesterol meant nothing to us then.
Hahaha. Ahh, memories from Saturday morning. This is the only Time for Timer PSA I remember seeing as a kid. Don't think I ever saw the cheese one, but wish I did.
Yep, made them and they did slide off. Whoever lol about the pom juice... we did make them with it (lived in LA and always had different healthy things around). My mom always made a mix of juice and yogurt popsicle.
I remember being 8 years old or so, and not making any sexual connotations with this commercial. It's not like he said "Whatever gets you sexually aroused". I figured he meant "whatever you think tastes good".
You know we need to go back to this kinds of commercials. They were so good, better than we have now believe me! Orange juice, or lemonade or whatever turns you on!
The only damn problem with this idea was that the toothpicks don't just magically stay straight once you poke them through the cellophane... that was a bloody MESS! Mom didn't care so much for that... thanks Timer! Bastard.
Ahhh Timer...saviour to hundreds of us latch key kids growing up in the 70's and 80's. I remember the Wagon Wheel and Quickfast commercials all to well. I beleive that is Frank Welker doing the voice.
Yes, these were classic commercials back then. I thought that was Lenny Weinrib doing the voice of "Time for Timer", because he sounds like Moonrock from "The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show."
Hehe....you know looking back I realize we were raised with this, Carly Cardinal and Schoolhouse Rock. There's a...I don't know how to put it....not quite disturbing, but...yeah, almost. I'll still take this over Dora the Explorer any day. ugh.
Did he just say "Whatever turns you on"? What the HELL man! Freakin creepy ass Timer... Hope he's doing time with Snagglepuss and the other cartoon pervs..
But the thing that's going to please her, is you make it in the freezer, and nothing could be easier to fix... now watch as I go through it, because woodpeckers like suet, and in fifteen years you'll be sucking lots of dicks!
we was in the hood so we was using cheap ass generic 3litter bottle soda labeled "Root Beer", "Cola", "Orange" or the evr popular "Grape". We could never wait the time it took for it to freeze over and we ended up making a mess and getting in trouble when parents got home.
Dexters laboratory was on TV from the late 90's til today and this little cartoon short was from the 70's!! The writers from dexters laboratory were most likely kids in the 70's and used this cartoon short for their cartoon. Where do you think they got the idea from.
This is the best of the bunch that ran in the 70's! Whenever I offer someone a drink, I often end the list with "orange juice - or lemonade - or pomegranate juice - or whatever turns you on!"
I tried making these too, but we had those cruddy icetrays from the 70's that didn't have separate compartments. The cellophane came off and I made a big 'ol mess.

You don't need 'em; we never bothered wit them.
Juice cubes are also good for adult beverages like frozen OJ cubes for screwdrivers: they don't water down as quickly. :)
