Thanks for the info. I've played guitar for a while, so I have the fundamentals and theory behind the fretwork down well enough but didn't have a clue regarding the bow and it's preparation. I actually got the cello home and couldnt figure out why the brand new bow wouldnt make pretty noises for me - lol. Again, thanks! She sounds sweet now!
In my studio, students learn the bow hold very quickly using the CelloPhant[tm] bow accessory. The accessory keeps the hand relaxed and fingers in place while we learn more music.
i thought it is a little bit tighter than usual when you use your pinky finger to fix the strength of string...however, i want the particular kind of rosin, it must be very beautiful smell...i love to watch.
Um as long as you don't hit anything while whipping your bow it doesn't matter. God all these people that's dissing this guy are all incredibly inexperienced. I admit I don't like his method of rosining the bow because it's a slow of way of doing it but doesn't mean he is doing anything wrong.
hey could u help me i just started playing the cello. it came with a half sized cello, a bow, and some rosin. now, the teacher said to use the rosin on the bow FOR A HALF HOUR. I tested my cello, and only the thinnest string on it worked without a creaky, bloodcurdling noise. is there anything im doing wrong? plz help
Your teacher told you to rosing the bow for 30 min?!? Even if it's a new bow with new hair, it doesn't take nearly that long to put efficient rosin on your hair. The "bloodcurdling noise" comes from putting too much rosin, which causes a lot of friction. Take off some of the rosin by whipping it in the air (just don't hit anything) would be the easiest method for you. OR just bow open strings continuosly while taking off the rosin off your strings with a cloth. I recommend a new teacher man.
umm i bought one like some days ago an i cant paly it because i dont have rosin, the strings and the bow are new so it doesn't make any sound when i try to play it
@exigentrevolution Depends on what your bow is made of and what you call "firm". If this is all it takes, playing the C string would cause serious damage.
Do NOT rosin your bow in a straight line with the rosin in the same position. Over time you will literally dig out a huge trench in your piece of rosin and it won't be much use. Rotate the rosin round a small bit each 3/4 strokes to ensure you don't wear out a huge line in the rosin.
No, it doesn't harm the bow if you apply the rosin in a straight line. However, if you apply it in a straight line constantly, with the rosin in the same position then eventually an indent will wear into your rosin. What i meant by rotating the rosin in circles was NOT to do that AS you are applying it. You still apply the rosin in straight lines, but after 3 or 4 strokes, stop and rotate the rosin about 45 degrees any direction you wish and repeat the process again.
I`ve never studied cello in my life and I am trying to learn how to play it from the start. I have just bought a student cello (river pearl) and I am using YOUR videos which are helping so much. I do not have private teachers and do not go to a music school just learning via net and your videos have been very useful for me. I am downloading all of them. Please do not stop.
The most of his stuff is wrong, he is a beginner and I guess he has never learned with a teacher, he probably made up his own technique. He plays as I used to play when I was 9 and I'm 18 now. Anyway, i'm sure you can find much better teachers on youtube. Keep going !
EVERYBODY i HAVE SEEN OR ASKED SO FAR ALL HAVE A VARYING DISCEPENCIES FROM SIMPLE TO NOT. sO THAT BEING SAU PLEASE DON'T TAKE YOUR VIDOES DOW FOR AWHILE. BECAUSE FOR WHATEVVER REASON I AM GOING TO GO /FOLLOW YOUR VIDEOS. T REALLY DOES SEEM THAT YOU ARE A FAR ABOVE THE OTHERS ON HERE CLAIING TO A KNOWLEDGEABLE SOURCE. i'D HATE TO MISS OUT ON WHAT EVER YOUR WILLING TO TEACH.
Why do you need the rosin?

sminhle, don't use a key to tear the surface of the rosin. this makes sharp edges in the rosin that damage the barbs on the bow hairs.

1. In case of dealing with NEW cake of rosin, the first thing to do is to use your car key to "tear" the surface of it, then applying to the bow.
2. The applying process must be done slowly but firmly, not as illustrated like in this video.

ooo. whipping the cello bow. Mr psycho, can you like pay for a new one?

Shorter, back and forth movements back and forth to the tip and back to frog are better. Don't whip your bow. You could seriously damage it.

Dude WTF
You don't give it a firm ANYthing. This could actually cause the bow to develop hairline fractures, which is HORRIBLE.
This guy is cute as hell, but mentally retarded.

Woops...
Sorry, I'm a bit of a beginner.
Are you saying that you should sort of move the rosin in circles as you apply it?
Does it harm the bow if you rosin it in a straight line?
