So the Weather Channel decided that the best anchors to begin their historic network broadcast were these two guys who looked like twins and both had mustaches. LOL! It's okay, I will always look back at this time period with a smile. :)
Better weather graphics than this existed in 1982. I don't know what kind of weird low-budget system they had, but I think even local TV stations were ahead of them at this point.
ahh,,just like MTV in the early 80s,TWC back then was actually watchable...now it's mostly 30 minute blocks of crap...I just want to see my weather not anything else
Wow @ how far TWC has come in 29 years on air. Thank God for TWC. Otherwise, there would be no hot women, no severe weather coverage, and no WeatherStar4000!!
andre bernier is now working at cleveland's fox affiliate WJW-TV 8 working under their chief meteorologist dick goddard who worked in that station longer than most people has ever been alive. al roker on the other hand now works for the weather channel and NBC used to work for WKYC-TV 3 in cleveland. thank for the history TWCFan2006.
Cleveland all the way, hey how's it goin Andre, I watch ya quite a bit on the TV, always regarded the weatherpeople as celebrities, I even wanted to be a weatherman when I was 8, but sadly, I learned that it's more work than I was prepared for.
Im still wondering, did the weather channel's prime end on August 15, 2005 (with the end of the "live by it" era and change of logo) or on July 6, 2008 (When the weather channel was aquired by NBCU)?
@metsfreak4life July 6, 2008, of course. There was no "Flick and a Forecast" on Friday nights, and TWC had some nice HD graphics for about a month beforehand. The "Bringing Weather to Life" era was weird, but not too bad.
When katrina made landfall in new orleans the weather channels days as weather only station free from blinding sensationalism ended. From that point on everything started looking like a spin off of cnn and fox news, crisis this, mayhem that, flashy reds and bright lights with alarms and scroll bars warning us of the imminent threats to life and property in bumblef*ck idaho with a population of 12. Stories of horror and grief to pull in ratings.
I wish the weather channel would have kept up its style. Now it's got all these movies and series on it. I missed it when it used to actually BE non-stop weather ( save for commercials).
@troshs Well maybe it's changed a bit, but as long as they keep the local on the 8s or at least a bottom line, they can show whatever the crap they want to keep viewers tuned in. Otherwise it gets boring after a few mins watching repeat 30 min episodes.
And little did Bruce or I know that, by luck of the draw, the first minute of TWC's broadcast would be made indelible on a worldwide network called the internet via something called YouTube! At 22, I had reached a goal I thought would take a lifetime (national TV)... but it was at a calculated risk since the concept of a cable channel dedicated to nothing but weather 24/7 was fodder for national comedians for years. Little did they know.
Hey Andre, what were your colleagues like at The Weather Channel up until you left? I loved The Weather Channel until the good meterologists either left or retired.
My husband and I loved seeing the Cleveland Indians coffee mug on Bruce's anchor desk every day while at TWC. It was great to see his loyalty to Cleveland from afar. We love his personality and reporting. We were glad to see that he came to Cleveland and will continue to watch him where ever he goes!!!!
Hooray! I'm a Ch.3 fan and now that Bruce is there, even more of a fan! Congrats to Bruce for making a smart switch and WOIO is just too high stress to watch! And to all the ladies who are on all the channels in Cleve.: take a look now at the beautiful hair all the ladies on Ch. 3 are sporting. You may want to update yours somewhat to look MORE professional instead of looking like you just rolled out of bed.
Bruce Edwards (real name Bruce Kalinowski) just left WOIO TV 19 in Cleveland after 10+ years.
Andre Bernier has spent the last 20 years at WJW TV 8 in Cleveland doing predominately mornings but recently switching to evening, splitting duties with the legendary Dick Goddard.
Hi, I really enjoyed this video. I graduated in '96 from Penn State with my meteorology degree and of course, remember Bruce Edwards and even Dick Goddard from Cleveland from my cable tv in suburban Erie, PA in the 1980s.. To this day, my fiance asks me who is this "weather expert" guy on the TWC who doesn't wear a tie and rolls his sleeves up... aah..the history..
Did Bruce Edwards leave Cleveland or did he just leave WOIO and going to another TV Station in the Cleveland TV Market? He used to call his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, "The best location in the nation."
Ha-ha! :) My current locale (& hometown), Bismarck, mentioned in TWC's first minute of being on-air! Man, TWC's the only place on national TV where Bismarck ever gets any attention (due to our weather extremes here, and little else of anything of note ;) ).
Anyhow, very interesting to see this bit of TV history unfold. (I wonder if the Bismarck cable tv system carried TWC at its launch...)

Those stone age graphics are a hoot. I remember this premier. How time flies. Who would have thought 24 hour weather would still be around today?

Sure was a lot better before NBC walked in the door.

I just love the 'cutting edge' computer graphics. For about 4 years, my TV stayed on either TWC or Headline News.
