I agree this interpretation of Melanie is beautiful and haunting, but there are multiple ways to interpret this text of the Stones. Quite frankly, I thought real 'wild horses' wouldn't work, as it was pretty obvious in the 70s on the hippie trail that the man and his woman are heroin addicts. "I watched you suffer a dull aching pain Now you've decided to show me the same. "Let's do some livin' AFTER WE DIE". Love to hear this music...
former music critic,....... sure wish that was on my resume! If you were truly 'in the know', I wouldn't feel this response was needed. Find DR. Demento's version of 'Pencil-necked Geek', memorize the lyrics, then sing it to yourself.
A weak interpretation of a great song. Just goes to show that Melanie has a limited repertoire. Never been able to understand why this woman got so far in the music business.
This was on Melanie's 1973 album Madrugada, which compiled covers of this, Randy Newman's "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" and Jim Croce's "Lover's Cross." It also had some great original songs on it and seemed to come from a very dark place. (Madrugada is a Portuguese word for the darkest part of the night just before dawn). It's never been released on CD. Dunno why. freespace.virgin.net/robert_ian.smith/Albums/Madrugada.htm
i have every album she ever made and somehow missed this cut..40 years later ( or so !!!) i just got em out and voila- B side of an album - if she has any b sides...just liked the other more i guess...or had heard Wild Horses too much back then..new meaning now..Wish Marianne Faithfull would do a version too!-( never will happen I'm guessing )..if Susan Boyle could...imagine Marianne's- anyway Why isn't Melanie in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame yet!..
@millerandlu The rock and hall of fame is a big joke that is why . There was a compilation album way back in the early nineties and there was a version of this sung by Marianne. I cannot find it anywhere but I am certain that I saw it. Since this song was written for her when she came out of an overdose coma it would be awesome IMO if Marianne sang it for sure. I love this version and Mick cannot even hold a candle to her.
I've never been entirely happy with this one. She's ever the optimist, and ever ready to go into vocal overdrive - but in this case, latching onto the "ride them someday" and making a mantra out of it, it kinda misses the point of the song. Yep, I too prefer the Sundays version.
I just listened to this for the first time in years...I have always thought this was an amazing version of this song. Very interesting -- puts a very individual spin on it. Not ever sure about all the violins...but, maybe...
When I first this version I did not like it. Too many "we're gonna ride them somedays". But, it has grown on me and it is now one of my favorite covers.
This is amazing, Melanie Safka in my oppinion for a female singer, was so ahead of her time, she's the one who set the milestone for new music today, that have that 70's folk kind of sound.
At 4.48 that quite squile or what ever was with her voice before she explodes ( as only Melanie can) still gives me goosebumps from when I first heared this when it was released. Very special moment I think.

This is the ultimate version for me, but then anything Melanie does is FANTASTIC.
She remains true to her art, and to her fans "The Dear Ones"

I`d love to hear Richie Havens cover this song.
Melanie`s version is great.
But it`s such a great song anyway.
Simple but deeply profound lyrics Jagger/Richards at their very best.
