  • Its interesting that Mien and Hmong have always been together like brothers. But, to my experience, my Mien friends and their parents can speak Hmong, but we can not speak Mien. They can understand us, but we can not understand them. Its sad. But if you are far away you'wll think that they speak in Hmong. Its just amazing that the languages sound so similar but it's so much differences. Love for all.

  • @MrKoto2010 I know, it's strange that they can't understand us but we can't understand them. Some of my relative's relative or family friend have a Mien grandmother and she can speak Hmong. At first me and my mom didn't know she was Mien until she told us. My mother was impressed of course.

  • @AtarashiNOhi I mean that they can understand us, but we can't understand them.

  • i heard that hmong and mien (i think it's mien, or some other group) have lived along side each other for a long time and as people live together, what they like in one ethnicity they incoporate into their own...

could that be why their clothes are similiar? >_<

    im just guessing.

  • beautiful long hair!

  • Ok, so I was right. When you post Mien clips, please use Mien. Peb tsis nyiam hus li "Yao," zoo li ib yam Hmoob tsis hus li "Miao." Thanks, I enjoy your clips.

  • Wait, are you Mien? I thought you are Hmong because "niamtxiv" literally means "momdad" in Hmong, but you write Siangh Mienh Nzangc. I'm confused. I commented one of your clips in Hmong thinking you are Hmong, lol.

  • @Jeaniedangc

Hello Jeaniedangc. I am Hmong. Thank you. Growing up, I was always intrigue by the many similarities between Hmong and Mien. Thank you for watching. I haven't had the time to find more videos, but I will post them when I find more.

  • Yao people ar supposed to be called Iu-Mien, i know this cuz i'm mien.

  • I think Yao and Hmong/Miao have a similar culture and history of persecution as well.

  • Thank you.

  • Very beautiful--I come back to watch it often. Thank you!

  • Oh and also, when I mentioned 'Hong Yao' to my grandma she said that they were Hmong or something but I asked how if they were 'Yao'

And the title of this song reads Chang Fa Yao, or Long Hair Yao =\

Sorry I'm posting so much comments I'm just very interested in Miao and Yao history =]

  • That's so funny. When I mentioned the Miao of Hunan to my mother, she said they are Yao. lol I have a link to many different Yao painting clothes.

  • hehe thats funny

  • I don't know too much in details about other groups. The truth history is written in the book and only Mien has that book somewhere in Laos or Thailand or Vietnam. They have the record of it. So I have been told.

  • (1st), Growing up, many of the Mien folks have told me about how Hmong people and we Mien have similarity. During the war, the Yaos King and the Chinese king fought with each other and Yaos king was close to losing the battles and so he use his magic power to create extra armies to battle against the Chinese.

  • (2nd) From leafs came the people known as the Hmong or Miao today. They were to help fight the Chinese armies. But the Yaos King defeated anyway. The Hmong people didnt have king; they serve the Yaos King.

I dont know if this is true or not.

  • Maybe, according to what I know, the Miao king is known as Chiyou. Under Chiyou, were the Miao as well as the Yao. Yes, maybe in the past, we did help one another, this is why our people have always live close to one another for centuries, from China, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and America.

  • When I was little, back in Thailand, I have heard some Hmong claiming having to share the same King with the Mien. And some says, they never have King but Mien King was their king as well. The ancient history is written in a book in chinese. Mien have records of that.

  • Well, Hmong people are broken into many groups that assimilated together. We do have a king. His name is Chiyou which means Grandfather in the Hmong language. The Hmong have many kings, some are mention in folktales while other are still being venerated. Who is this Mien King?

  • I don't know too much about Mien King; his name is Pien Huang also known as Panwang in China. In English it means King Pan; King Pien; King Panwang. He is known as the First King. Who possess magic power.

There may be some missing links and that we can not know about the Hmong and Mien.

  • From what I know, the Mien were once exempt from paying taxes to the Chinese Emperor. The Hmong however were not and were force to pay heavy taxes. This is why the Hmong still called the Chinese by their ancient tribe name, Xia. The Hmong and Chinese ancestors' Xia once lived along the Yellow River in China. This is why the Hmong people carry the saying that their home is called the Yellow River. I don't know much about Yao/Mien history, only a little.

  • That may be true; yes, Mien in China were exempt from paying taxes.

I really don't want to stir problems here. I will private message you if I have any new updates. Thank you.

  • Yes the Mien had a document sealed by Ping Wang and it said that we did not have to pay tax. But the was Ping Wang, not the other kings that followed so afterwards, the later Chinese government came to collect tax from us but we refused to pay which ended up with a big war. From here we started to move south.

About the Yellow River, I don't think the Mien lived near it because in our song book it says to keep away from it, maybe because there were other inhabitants like the Hmong and Chinese.

  • It said: Don't cross the Yellow River or you won't be able to come back.

Or something like "when you're thirsty don't drink from the Yellow River or you wont come back, don't eat from the Yellow River or you will meet the shadow world[death?].

  • I also wonder if the older Hmong generation has ever heard of a Yao/Mienh King, and vise versa. I never heard any of my folks talk about Chi You nor seen it in any writings so I don't know.

There is also controversy to Mienh's exact origin in the past, because there are the ones who crossed the sea and those who didn't. Where were we before that? Also there's a lot of names of locations so I don't know which is the origin.

  • Interesting. We have many saying about the Yellow River. One particular famous saying that many Hmong always use is "If I don't see the Yellow River, my heart will always be unsatisfied." When a Hmong person is dead, his head is place facing toward the north. I don't know, but my mother and father told me Hmong and Mien have been living together for centuries.

  • thats cool, im pretty sure we have been living together for centuries

  • Indeed very interesting! Nice made!

  • I just red a News paper there was a Chinese guy just visited U S. He said that Mien and Hmong are brother and sisters. Awesome Mien Video!

  • Maybe, because we have live together for thousand of years.

  • Yes, thats true, bro. Mien followed Hmong

went South East during Qing dynasty.

  • Thanks so much Na!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • I'm Hmong i love the Mien as much as my self and my Hmong people wish we are live long for ever.
