She must have been a suicide person.

Haibane (I think) enter the town after dying, and have the day of flight when forgiven or resolved or whatever for their past life. With a suicide, resolution can come only from the self, but since the Interpreter said, "rely on the self and you will be trapped in the circle of sin," Reki is doomed, by the nature of who she is.

They are given a name first based on their dreams in the coocoon, and then they are given their real names, based on their personality, after they (supposedly) understand their role as a Haibane.

I still thought it would have made a little more sense if Reki and Rakka's pasts were intertwined somehow, and that the person who loved Rakka and died with her, would have been Reki.

perhaps, but i think it's a little better this way, they have no memories so they don't really have any family, which makes their relationships that much more crucial. they may not have family but by making many friends they make their own families.
