  • This is cool. I will share this video with my friends for sure.

  • I never thought of knitting with anything other then yarn. I think I will try using something new.

  • Cool, I never knew I knitted english style, and I don't quite remember how I came about learning how to do that or just found that it was easier for me.

  • how is this geek knitting its normal knitting who ever named this vid your fkin perfeticc

  • @babybieberful What's more "pathetic" is your use, or rather misuse, of grammar and spelling. ^_^ Enjoy the rest of your day.

  • @babybieberful BUUUUUUUURNED BY HIGHGUY

  • You *do not* have to keep the yarn in the front in order to do purl stitches in continental style, I certainly never have. It's more simple IMO to keep it in the back and work with the needle rather than directing the yarn with your index finger. Just saying!

  • Awesome vid. If you are a newbie knitter like me there is some great content at at ebeginnersknitting (.) com

  • so he went to europe to learn how to knit?

  • I already knew how to knit but I had never thought of knitting Cassette tapes or Fiber Optic cables until I watched this!

  • i know someone who used strips of plastic bagstied together...it was kinda pointless since she made a plastic bag out of plastic bags =P

  • @mApL3HoLiC But of course a knitted plastic bag is much more durable and interesting than an ordinary plastic shopping bag ;).

  • I cast on like that but you don't have to do that loop at the beginning you just have to hold the yarn like you're doing in your hands and work the yarn like you're doing

  • awesome video. Been crocheting for 25 years, but knitting has never been something I can master. This is the least complicated and best video I've found! Scarf is in progress. Amazing ideas with the fiber optic cable. BF is a lighting designer - he's definitely into the LED idea!

  • OMG IDEA! Knitting graffiti with video cassette tape! I could make a cozy for the light post in front of blockbuster.

  • @Brownin1919 Knitting.

  • I would have liked to see the fiber optics one, so I could see it lit up

  • Nice way to bridge the gap between technology and knitting. Am definitely going to try it with the old cassette tape now and see how it turns out.

  • What does knitting have to do with electronics or hacking...?

  • Did you say Esch?

Esch in Luxembourg or Esch in Berlin?

  • dude....i want to see a knitting machine

  • I wish you could do a video with the fiber optic scarf...that is a "must see!"

  • this awesome! this is the only thing that could teach me how to knot!

  • lol subliminal @ 2:02 :)

  • If you pause it right there you see initially a system path and then some other weird nonsense....

  • did you pause and look at it? its just a bunch of code but thats funny

  • I really like the LED and fiber optic ideas. cool!

  • I've never seen anyone start a cast on without a slip knot.

  • same....I have to try that...

  • It's not that hard, they do this style of casting on a lot in Brazil and I believe Portugal and Italy depending on the region

  • I have to say, I love to knit....in fact I am obsessive...and I love to do projects that involved repurposing something...so the knitting with the tape from a cassette is something I'm probably going to run with!

  • Whoa whoa whoa. First we're casting onto a single needle, and an instant later, both needles have yarn on them. Curse you, video editor! I am easily confused!

  • I used to knit with pencils during class at my middle school lol.

  • Out of curiosity, what would be your idea of a better use for a knitter's free time?

  • I though they were going to use wire rather than yarn...

  • that was soo cool!!

  • The thing at 0:33 is so cool.

  • how do you get fiber optics to knit? where would you buy them at??

  • Whats with all that text at 2:02 Yes i actually tried to pause to see what it said and i did it x3

  • I got the point. Its just some wired coding.

    Example: #1/USR/LOCAL/BIN/PERL -s--

And so one. Im taking a screenshot of this. You can get it, by sending me a private message on this site.

But know for some other. I dont really get, why it shut appear at the video.

It must be a faul of the making. Programs apperantly mest up during the resampling in some program. (Between clips and takes.)

  • It's actually a knitting geek joke. She's saying that as a proper geek knitter you should know how to *purl* -- that's the second stitch she demonstrates. But what flashes up on the screen at 2:02 is a bit of *perl* coding. It's just a cute geek joke.

  • i want to see the fiber optic string as a finished product! that sounds sooo cool. B-)

  • hehe cool co method! never seen that before!

  • Excellent demo!

  • i love love love knitting

  • I totally cant make socks.

  • I've knitted 3 hats :P Great to wear in the winter :P Also made a couple of socks :P

  • soo my ancle are a bloody geek too ... suxx film

  • I'm a male knitter of many years; since a kid. Just now learning about Continental knitting. This looks so totally cool. I only wish you would have 'shown' how you wrap the yarn around your left working hand, to keep the tension. Your c.o. looks amazing and easy. I will have to watch a few times, to understand it, but it looks totally easy and fast. THANK YOU for your video. You guys ROCK!

  • Yay knitting!

  • 2:01-- ???!!!

  • Thats just some random code it doesnt mean anything

  • it's 'perl'

  • it's actually 'purl,' it's basically like the knit stitch reversed.

  • i wanna see the fiber optic fabric lol

  • yea

i wanted to see that too

  • your cool, you spelled is with a "z" and put a space in "about".

what the hells with the haters? do they really think they're cool?

-nekoheehee, TAHS's god of the nerds

  • Cool Geek!

  • What's with the Computer vs. Knit hate? Compu-nerds and Yarn-harlots are both Math Geeks inside.

  • Yes, it is just knitting, but as long as someone was insprired to move beyond conventional fabric as a media, Bre & FBZ did their job. There are so many people who can't even envision a knit piece in a different colour than the model picture presents, let alone a different yarn or plastic or wires.

  • I think geek knitting is challenging and cool. not any geek can do that.

  • omg its ANALOG!

  • geeks are cool

  • wow I used to think I was the only one left on earth who knew how to knit. I never tried to combine electronics with it before but I will now.

  • this vid inspired me to learn to knit. right now I'm knitting a belt out of scraps of copper pair wiring, left over from an old phone system. It's super sturdy and looks funkykewl!

  • Hahaha that was so cool and geeky ^-^

  • i CAN knit (oh yeah) i PWNNNNN oh yeah

  • Nice. She has a Tux T-shirt. Now thats geek.

  • where is the fiber optic sock? i feel cheated. Bre your projects are really cool but this is quite complicated.

  • Knitting is not only very cool way to tie knots. It is a useful way to improve manual dexterity and hand eye coordination. It also does something intresting in the brain with complex problem solving. Sorry, I cannot remember the reference to this study.

  • das gewoon op z`n hollands "BREIEN"

  • Check out this link!

    _HAPPYKNITTING.COM_

Also do a search on youtube on: knitting patterns norway

  • what is the code at 2:01 ? bin/pearl/something something heh

is that a server somewhere ? :P whats in there !?

  • no its some geeky thing about knitting pearl... heres all the text: a1/user/local/bin/perl --s-- -export-a-crypto-system-sig --RSA-in-3-lines-PERL

    ($k,$m)aQAXGV;$,=unpack(H.$w,$m."\O"x$w),$_ ' echo "16do$w 2+40iosd*.^1(d2%Sa2/d0<X+d*La1mz\U$n%0)sxsk'($m*)\Eaz|Xx+ +Pldc',s/^,|\W//g,print pack('H*',$_)while read(STDIN,$m.($w=2*$d-1+length($nildie"$0 (-d) k n\n")&~1)/2)

its the best i can see ;)

so anyone that got another result?...

BTW: yes i know im stoned...

  • Hey, your friend is a thrower! She works with the enligh method of knitting which means she has her working yarn is her left hand!!

  • Makezine...

Guys, I love these posts...but, knitting?

    [full body shiver]

  • knitting is da bomb.

  • Nothing wrong with knitting. It's a form of creating. That t-shirt you wear: it's knitted. If you knew what knitting looks like, you'd be able to see the pattern to look for. You people who think that electronics is the be-all and end-all are gonna be in for a shock when the world winds down, computers are useless, and everything is low-tech again and you all don't know JACK SHIT for survival skills. We who know how to knit, build a fire, hunt, and sharpen knives will "pwn" you losers.

  • YAY!! I can pwn n00bs!!

  • Nature wants us dead: Survival is the Ultimate Hack!

  • so true but comps dont suck

  • that will never happen.

  • Computers are not useless, see that design on your t-shirt, that was made by computer. Face it, computers are extremely useful. Kniting is not, lighting a fire is useful, sharpening knives is ot useful.

  • you fail knitting is useful and if you dont sharpen knives it wont be sharp stupid idiot

  • How exactly is knitting useful? Other than to make jumpers? You don't need even to knit, computers can do it for you!

Face it people knit, people don't knit, this starts arguments so just face the fact that some people like knitting more than computers, and some like computers more than knitting.

  • wow...five minutes of my life...wasted...

  • nice but electronics and building is better

  • This is actually the best knitting instrcutions on youtube. Thanx.

  • I just wanna see what people have knitted using fiber optic or cassette tape!

  • reminds me, I need more yarn. funny, I make 'nightmare squares' for my little brothers. 7 stitches, 7 rows. "Tie one on, nightmares be gone!" lol. Nice video.

  • booooorrrringggggg lol

knitting is overcomplicated. its really not that hard

  • i want to know what i can make out of a tiger toy vugo its useless can i w=make something worth what i payed

  • It cannot be a subliminal message if you noticed it. By definition, "subliminal" means "below the threshold of consciousness."

  • and it wasnt noticed till viewed in slowmo so upon viewing was subliminal and was in your description below consious viewing

  • if you play and then stop at 2:01, you can read the "perl script" -- not illegal, not a subliminal message, just a short joke (PERL/purl).....jeeperz, don't be so suspicious, eh?

  • 2:01 subliminal message

  • whoo germany:o i live there

  • Joke or not its still subliminal messaging an illegal here in UK and should be banned world wide sending information to people brains without them knowing is NOT cool other I do like your videos

  • other wise I do like your videos

  • Well if this message makes you want to go learn perl, wouldnt it be a reasonably good subliminal message?

  • Oh give it a rest already. It wasn't a subliminal message. Had it been you wouldn't have even noticed it.

  • Lol, now I know what to do with those old audio tapes I have at home! But I wonder what needle size I need for them...

  • Did anybody read the subliminal flash?

I've tried pausing to read it, but I can't hit theb right frame.

Bre - can you stop using the flashes, they're annoying (and illegal on UK TV).

  • It's just some perl code... geek joke!

  • > groan <

  • Woohoo! Go Fbz!

  • so wk12 isnt the only ones who have used this way of cryptic ad/message huh. brilliant.

  • is it just me or have youtube videos started loading way slower

  • i think its just u mine is fine

  • i have notised that to it is weird

  • wow

  • fiber optics knitting rocked...but what's with the subliminals in the purling segment?

  • What is the white thing that pops up at 2:01?

  • seems to be a linux shell executing a cryptic PERL command

  • err pixel'd wool? more like lazy to complete it.

  • you mean like too "lazy to complete" like too lazy to type "too" in your post? j/k but I had to say it. :)

  • Cool, Fiber Optic Knitting. Great Idea, I really like it. Gotta try it out.

  • pfffffffff hahahahahahahahaahahahahaahaaaa pffff ahhahahahahaha!!!! :DDDDD

  • lol i saw the dude in the back stop on his bike to see what was going on lol :P

  • I didn't understand a word she said, but more power to her for her knitting skills! I wish they had showed the fiber optics knitted and lit up, though.

  • I can build super complex circuits...but I can't follow this in front then behind and through knitting business. I don't feel bad though..I notice Bre didn't do it either..

She's like a super knitting ninja..

  • Notice the code at 02:01 ?

  • It's a snippet of the programming language, PERL. I managed to pause it at the right moment, but it's all Greek to me.

  • Good sense of irony, lol, thats the intention of document encryption routines in PERL, to make your data Greek to other people XD

  • I'd like to see the fiber optics knitted up... I hope they do another video showing that at some point!

  • yay! A knitting video. I <3 knitting. I'm gonna have to try out the fiber optics thing... maybe make a scarf... cause I love scarfs.

  • aww not as cool as the rest :(

  • Man, it will take me a couple of viewings to really get what she is doing there. It's crazy how someone came up with that (well that goes for a lot of things). Anyways, I really like the LED and fiber-optic knitting - people are creative :) I will definitely have to try this out!

  • lol she is FAST!

  • its like shes from another planet

  • ah ha ha perl hee hee crax me up ^.^ I already knew how to knit but now other geeks can too YAY

  • cHOP sticks" COOL SPin ON things

  • I really like the LED and fiber optic ideas. cool!

  • very informative , we need more people like you , its an old art that has almost been forgoten by the new generation

  • knitting ? lol

  • just some perl...

  • i paused it at 2:01...i dont even know what that says...lol

  • chewykiller

    so did i

  • Ha! I get it.

  • ;p in three lines, I googled, in two lines! So, is there going to be some x-mas make with fiber optic sweaters on the horizon?

  • 12th comment!

  • Since I'm not allowed to send a message to makemagazine directly, I'll post here: can you please upload a video on how to knit with fiber optics? Looks like there are a lot of us wanting to learn how. Thanks!

  • Optics are short so id reccomend using them with a plain yarn. Im a knitter and I love mixing up yarns with one another.

  • what is that code u flashed

  • I'd rather hire a vietnamese kid to do knitting for me.

  • wtf.......

  • 9th'

  • omg 8th comment :|

  • omg gtfo

  • im gonna learn!

  • oh crap i saw that code you flashed
