You *do not* have to keep the yarn in the front in order to do purl stitches in continental style, I certainly never have. It's more simple IMO to keep it in the back and work with the needle rather than directing the yarn with your index finger. Just saying!

I cast on like that but you don't have to do that loop at the beginning you just have to hold the yarn like you're doing in your hands and work the yarn like you're doing
