Extending health insurance to children up to age 26 is for the rich. With the current unemployment rate this is a sham. Recent graduates working part time do not qualify. Only if they DO NOT WORK at all. That's because if the employer offers insurance, which is required by law with 50 > employees, grads must pay out of pocket for far inferior coverage. Many rich children take a year off after graduation. Poor children work part-time while looking for FT work. Rich kids get quality health care.

It's ridiculous to fight this plan for reduced and affordable healthcare! Think about Americans who couldnt afford college and work for minimum wage with a family. The children in those families can't help what homes they were brought into, but they have to suffer with no healthcare. It's complete bullshit. Quit being greedy and learn to love EVERYONE.
if we get out of iraq then taxes would not have to be raised at all to fund it. and if we would stop the tax breaks for the rich and big companies we would easily have enough money to fix many of the problems we have. if we only had the political will.
Government incentives help drive business and expand the economy. The rich are at the heart of this growth. Sure, let's stop encouraging people to open businesses, watch unemployment rise as the workforce increases and jobs decrease. Then we can see how much money we have left over to provide healthcare to mass amounts of unemployed.

Mr. Obama appears to be a nice man who is looking forward to keeping the status quo for most issues. That's not what I want in a President with our current situation. ok, I heard "I will sign a universal healthcare plan by the end of my first term." and "let me explain my plan", but then no plan. so mr obama, please EXPLAIN YOUR PLAN. how does your plan work, how is it funded?
Hey Barack!! Where in the constitution, that you SWORE to uphold, does it permit socialized health care? Where does it permit you to take my hard earned money, and use it against my will, to give to big business while they charge this country max amounts for health services??
Obamas plan is just for more health insurance plans. More health insurance is not the answer!
The insurance company's will just get richer, yet still provide us with an inadequate amount of care. Insurance company's benefit only by denying care. They get rich while we stay sick! America needs a single-payer, not-for-profit, Universal health care system (H.R. 676) and eliminate the greedy health insurance middle men.
"end of your first term" is a little late for millions of people, Senator. What would take so long, politics as usual? Your response was also a little short on details. I am anxious to hear more.
What if through the cooperation of a multitude of businesses, everytime you as a consumer bought a car, coffee, meal, tools, magazine, tickets to sporting event, movie, plane trip, etc, you were prepaying for health care with no additional fees? What if prices remained low and competitive. Increased Sales tax Not needed. What if 4/5 of economy primarily helped 1/5 (health) as well as prosper more itself?
What if Primary Health funding was acheived through more consumer spending(their own choice) on other industry products and services(what people "want" to spend)?... What if cooperatively a multitude of biz(other industries) collectively paid an individually affordable gross profit percent into one Pool/fund, by choice, with tax relief incentives and while keeping prices low and competitive for consumer? What if Gov't/taxes were barely invovled?
anyways, its weird seeing a polotician whant to do something to better the country rather then to better their pockets with money. the kid of person obama is has been long over due in our country. maybe he is the rencarnation of lincoln.
Is it just me, or does Obama speak well and say little. He has a detailed plan for Universal Healtcare (bravo!), but how about a few details in this detailed plan?
Everytime I hear a speech on a big issue like this from a presidential candidate... I don't know whether to believe it or not. Politicians lie. No surprises there for anybody. They need to get their votes, I understand that. I hope this time I'm wrong though. I'd give almost anything to see universal healthcare in America. If you win please don't sell us out Obama.
Explain your plan. Tell me your stance on the issues. All these Obama videos are just about how great a guy he is. Tell me what he's going to do and how he's going to do it.
I want Barack for Prez but one problem I have is he says he has a "Universal" plan. No matter what he says it still includes the Profit Driven insurance and drug companies.
We need Single Payer. The money is there for it because we're already paying far more than we should be.
I love many of Barack Obama's messages and plan on voting for him in 2008, but I just hope he switches his stance on universal healthcare. Universal healthcare would be far to expensive for all of the health problems in America. What we need is Universal PREVENTATIVE Healthcare... one where annual physicals, vaccinations, and other preventative measures would be free for all Americans. Lets educate America and keep them from getting sick in the first place.
"40% of their income." How do you intend to fund a universal plan? An income tax has to be imposed, and it could be AS MUCH AS 40%, in addition to taxes that we already pay. Further, I'm curious to know how these candidates intend to protect the jobs of insurance and healthcare workers which will inevitably suffer under a universal plan.
Hey, I love the idea of universal affordable healthcare. But all he said here was that he wants it--no kidding. The devil is in the details of HOW. He never says.
I'm from Canada and I believe our system is 10x better than that of the US system. Sanjay Gupta is deceiving the public and Larry King is so far up his ass it's not funny. The US health care system is pathetic. Privatization has destroyed equality of basic health coverage for the American citizen with no insurance. The US government cannot even take care of it's own people but they are funding an immoral war and the occupation of many countries globally. Very disfunctional.
I believe we need a change in our healthcare program because things are not working out. If they were we wouldn't have some many families who have little or no health insurance because they just exceed the limits for MA and they're jobs offer little to no health insurance. Also, this doesn't account for the people who don't qualify for aid because they don't have children and they're jobs offer little to no health insurance. Everything needs to change.
Enjoyed the speech...also like how when the Obama HQ replies to comments here they put their name and don't pretend like it's actually Obama replying.
Universal Health Care has always been Hillary Clinton's idea, but she was fought hard. Now the other democrats are following her on this issue, but only because they have to or they don't stand a chance of being elected. Hillary is the one who really cares. Guess why the power structure slandered her so much?
Just as long as "universal healthcare" doesn't mean another half-hearted attempt like the Medicare Drug program... as long as he doesn't put the stinkin' insurance companies as the PROVIDERS like they did with Medicare part D... THEN MAYBE this would be good for all... as long as it is fairly and equitably administered without regard to ability to pay.
This universal health-care plan will not work. We'll be setting up yet another beurocracy. Think of Homeland Security and FEMA. They'll be giving you a number and taking away your name.
This health care will have problems as all beurocracies do. And remember, beurocracies would rather fail than change, because failure is routine.
Having a government support it's citisens who are being gouged by insurace companies and have a genetic history of cancer is not communism! Look at Canada and most of Europe. (this was to JiveDadson)
Goggle these 4 words, then tell me if your for universal health care after you do some carful reading of what you find: socialized, medicine, canada, waiting. just goggle those 4 words.
I live in Canada, and I'm content with out healthcare system. I bet your "careful" reading on the terrors of socialized medicine come from American sources.
P.S. Waiting is mainly determined by severity of ailment. So if ya got a runny nose, like most people I see in doctors offices up here, you'll have to wait a while. Like 2 hours tops.
I agree that health care is a great thing, and everyone should health coverage. However I study Economics, and I started by studing Math at the University of Toledo. I know by taking the moralistic stance on health care most nations have played "Robin Hood". They steal from the rich and give to the poor. Do we have to have a similar system in the US?
He... Hehe... They don't play "Robin Hood". Everybody pays their taxes, and in return, Healthcare for all, rich or poor. I know what I'm talking about because I live in Ontario, Canada.
Since when is it the Washington's responsibility to provide health care for all Americans? We should actually look at our CONSTITUTION in order to see which services our Fed should be providing to its citizens. Funny how Washington thinks they can spend YOUR MONEY BETTER THAN YOU CAN. Also, where in the CONSTITUTION does it say that Washington gets to decide how much a particular family can afford? How is this any of Washington's business?
UGHHH!!!! I am SICK of censorship. You and hillary both. To whoever is reading this and "approving it," I highly advise you to convince your party to rethink its strategy and allow free speech. How you behave here, and how you treat the people here, is a reflection of how you will behave and treat people when in office. It doesn't look good.
Really? Assuming you are perfectly healthly, sure. And the rest of us? It isn't cheap. Its a swindle and con job for every doctor's visit and prescription.
I didn't hear a whole lot of details (more of an outline), but I heard one thing: "remove the waste and inefficency." However, that is easier said than done; is this truly the way to contain the cost? In short: can he do it? HOW will you do it?
Public healthcare is extremely expensive and will cause tax-raise!
I´m from Europe, Denmark, and would prefer a private insurance based system as in the USA. The reason is that public healthcare is inefficient, of bad quality and just not worth the tax-raise!
people say that other countries get universal healthcare because they get taxed more which is untrue. we pay over twice as much for healthcare, 16% of GDP, than any other country in the world. countries with universal healthcare pay 6% of their GDP on healthcare or less. the reason we pay more is because everything from prescriptions to treatment costs more here because private healthcare has inflated the costs! stop the highway robbery!
Look, this health care isn't free, and it isn't constitutional. Not only are you paying for the health care, but some are paying for far more than they use, and you have no choice as to the quality of care you recieve. I have a british friend who has been waiting 2 months to see a specialist to be diagnosed with cervical cancer. We can all provide this service for eachother, and keep chairity to groups who are efficient and private.
Looked over the plan on the website and I am very impressed. It actually sounds reasonable. If he actually keeps his promises (something lacking from many politicians these days), I'll be even happier.
I did have one concern. What would this plan cost the taxpayers and where would the said money come from. I would like an actual response from BarackObamadotcom about this. I've been waiting for some real meat from Mr. Obama for a while and I'm glad it's finally come.
Where in the constitution is there listed a right to health care?
Years ago prescription drugs were seen as medical breakthroughs that would allow people to live longer, healthier lives. Now access to them is considered a "right," as Congress approved the largest expansion of an entitlement in the history of this country.
Will access to brain surgery soon be a right? Where does it end?
I never read political books, but a friend bought me "The Audacity of Hope" for a present. I'm on pg. 166, and Obama really reminds me of Abraham Lincoln, before he was President. Obama just has a great sense of right and wrong, no matter what the party lines stances are. Obama in '08!!
Is it just me, or is the issue of healthcare finally getting the serious attention it deserves? It's on the tips of the tongues of all the major candidates; and with the well-reviewed movie Sicko coming out, we might just see universally affordable healthcare realized. Obama seems to be very serious and not merely paying lip service.
i love obama. i'm a libertarian, so my ideology is much closer to ron paul's, but barack is such a thoughtful, likable, level headed guy. he'll be a great leader for this country. the democrats are retarded if they don't nominate him. republicans are retarded if they don't nominate paul, but we know they're retarded. i can't believe there are two candidates that are, so different from each other that i like so much
Thank you Barrack! I love you so much. I have a story for you. My neighbor is a wonderful man, but he cannot afford health care. He can afford two new plasma TVs, a nice Mercedes, wonderful European vacations and fancy jewelry for his boyfriend, but under GW Bush, he is so poor that he cannot even afford health care. That happens every day in this country. Please you must begin to impeach Bush. I weap for America today.
ive only had insurance for about 10 months in the last 15 years (from ages 12 to 27). lousy layoffs. universal health care would be nice, but people say that his plan isnt really "universal", its just cheaper. hey either way, i'd be happy with that. i need insurance, i could break my ankle at any time...
Horribe Idea. We have the best healthcare system in the world. Not all people might not have access too it, but people come from all over the world to receive it. We need, laws to protect patients, maybe even government support for people who cant afford health insurace. Public schools ruined the education of america, deeper dividing the rich and poor. Universal healthcare will do the same to medicine. Obama just lost any support he may have gotten from me because of this one.
Most Western countries do have Universal health care. But doesn't make it right. France for instance their average income tax is 49% because of their health care. Their recent election were elections for a more conservative presidency to reverse it and base their economical model off of America. Universal Healthcare doesn't work economically, and is ethically wrong.
will his healthcare plan be optional? also, from an economic perspective, regulating the price of healthcare can cause the quality of healthcare to go down
but what is the universal health care plan? and how can he sign something into law if congress doesn't agree on it. so please, mr. obama, tell us what the plan is rather than just a promise to sign something. if it's a plan to have people set money aside into a health savings account, how much is that going to be? is it feasible? i just want to know...what's the plan?
he's definitely ready for the presidency, he showed in many polls that he is the only democrat that can beat a republican face to face. At first I was skeptical about him but I think he is hope for a better america.(especially after bush)
Politicians always find some poor soul to exploit for their own purpose. Universal health care means increased taxation. Imagine the cost of insuring hundreds of millions. Who will fund this? We the people. When you say the "government" will pay for a program, that's nonsense. It's money out of our pockets that pay for everything. Think.
I'm self employed, and I have a pre-existing medical condition similar to the one in this example. I still don't understand why/how a government sponsored universal healthcare program will be beneficial. I'm not convinced (and I pay nearly $500/monthln for one person - no family involved).
to humder: the people in the west actually do have to pay for their health inssurance, but it's really not a lot of money...anyway, most west european countries are welfare states, which the USA isn't...it has it's economic benefits(not being a welfare state), but also it's negatives(as we see when we look at american healthcare)
Nothing really, American healthcare has gone to hell since the Health Management Organizations (HMOs) started. Healthcare in America is a business adventure and the HMOs are some of the biggest money makers. Bottom line they decide if you are going to get help or if you are not, through measures such as pre-existing conditions, having endless pre-certification procedures, etc. Universal health care would allow everyone to get treatment they need.
This healthcare plan is the only one of the major candidate's for president that has a shot of getting through congress...and it has a very good one.
The guy is smart. He knows he can't take the insurance companies head-on because he'll either A. Get assasinated or B. Too much special interest money will get in the way and nobody will get any kind of health care coverage and four years from now we'll still be in the same mess we're in today. Good job Barack!
If anyone should be in favor of free health insurance, it should be me - if I just cared about my own situation. I have an incurable blood disease, and my temporary health insurance runs out in three months. There's just one thing: It's unconstitutional. Restoring the founders' plan means even more to me.
Don't spin the issue. He didn't say "free". Would you mind showing us where in the constitution it says that we're not allowed to have universal health care?
where in the constitution does it say that we can't have universal healthcare? I suppose it also says that police and the fire department should be paid for by each individual who calls during an emergency.
The 5th Amendment of the Constitution states "nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
If you tax based on income and then give benefits based on health, this contradicts the 5th amendment.
Also remember the 10th Amendment says if it is not enumerated in the Constitution/Bill of Rights/Amendments, all other responsibilities fall at the state/local level.
Everyone is paying for it, they are just paying through taxes, except this way they have no choice who to pay, or the quality of care they recieve. ITS NOT FREE PEOPLE!
yuck, another eurosnob. reality (should) tell you that countries have their healthcare systems for a reason, you need to look at economic histories in nations to see why present domestic policies occur. Every country has a different history, and from that a different system today.
Affordable health care? Sounds like every other political hack's take on universal care. Let me know when universal care is both free and defined as a human right. You know, like in those other industrialized nations.
They (ab)use one family to futher their own illegitimate gains, and wrap it all in rhetorical flourishes that tug at your heart-stirings, all the while saying abolsutely nothing.
There is no plan here. It's all talk. Barak once again puts more effort into speeches that promise, than laws that demand.
I am very thankful we here in Canada have universal health care. I am grateful I won't lose my home or business if I get sick. Sounds like "SICKO" from Michael Moore will be right-on and shake the collective heads of Americans. Universal Health care for all should be in your Bill of Rights!
40% of their annual income on health care premiums?? insane.. We need this guy Barack Obama to get in there and clean this mess up that George Bush is about to leave behind.
Also, this doesn't account for the people who don't qualify for aid because they don't have children and they're jobs offer little to no health insurance. Everything needs to change.

Universal Health Care has always been Hillary Clinton's idea, but she was fought hard. Now the other democrats are following her on this issue, but only because they have to or they don't stand a chance of being elected. Hillary is the one who really cares. Guess why the power structure slandered her so much?
nicolatwo 4 years ago
But will Hillary still pursue Universal Healthcare after being paid almost $1 million in Lobbyist money to silence her?
cpena1988 4 years ago
Just as long as "universal healthcare" doesn't mean another half-hearted attempt like the Medicare Drug program... as long as he doesn't put the stinkin' insurance companies as the PROVIDERS like they did with Medicare part D... THEN MAYBE this would be good for all... as long as it is fairly and equitably administered without regard to ability to pay.
bigdood 4 years ago
This universal health-care plan will not work. We'll be setting up yet another beurocracy. Think of Homeland Security and FEMA. They'll be giving you a number and taking away your name.
This health care will have problems as all beurocracies do. And remember, beurocracies would rather fail than change, because failure is routine.

Goggle these 4 words, then tell me if your for universal health care after you do some carful reading of what you find: socialized, medicine, canada, waiting. just goggle those 4 words.
abrandjr 4 years ago
@abrandjr

There is a video " Healthcare Wait Times Guarantee" on You Tube that is fairly recent about wait times in Canada.

Orbit888 4 years ago
people say that other countries get universal healthcare because they get taxed more which is untrue. we pay over twice as much for healthcare, 16% of GDP, than any other country in the world. countries with universal healthcare pay 6% of their GDP on healthcare or less. the reason we pay more is because everything from prescriptions to treatment costs more here because private healthcare has inflated the costs! stop the highway robbery!

Is it just me, or is the issue of healthcare finally getting the serious attention it deserves? It's on the tips of the tongues of all the major candidates; and with the well-reviewed movie Sicko coming out, we might just see universally affordable healthcare realized.

Think.
necessitous 4 years ago
I'm self employed, and I have a pre-existing medical condition similar to the one in this example. I still don't understand why/how a government sponsored universal healthcare program will be beneficial. I'm not convinced (and I pay nearly $500/monthln for one person - no family involved).

What's so good about american healthcare?
cookleon 4 years ago
Nothing really, American healthcare has gone to hell since the Health Management Organizations (HMOs) started. Healthcare in America is a business adventure and the HMOs are some of the biggest money makers. Bottom line they decide if you are going to get help or if you are not, through measures such as pre-existing conditions, having endless pre-certification procedures, etc. Universal health care would allow everyone to get treatment they need.

Barack is a smart man.

JiveDadson 4 years ago

crazybrett 4 years ago
where in the constitution does it say that we can't have universal healthcare? I suppose it also says that police and the fire department should be paid for by each individual who calls during an emergency.
greedybones 4 years ago
Why is it unconstitutional? Because there is no health care amendment?
cookleon 4 years ago
The 5th Amendment of the Constitution states "nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation."
If you tax based on income and then give benefits based on health, this contradicts the 5th amendment.
Also remember the 10th Amendment says if it is not enumerated in the Constitution/Bill of Rights/Amendments, all other responsibilities fall at the state/local level.
