  • Walt would be proud!

  • Love it!!!

  • Fantastic!!! Amazing execution!! Could not have been pulled off any better than that! Creepy, beautiful, magical, and down right scary!

  • wait wait wait, i think i know where this is...is this in studio city?

  • @mulbytime97 Yep! Good catch.

  • Okay.. so in a nutshell. Projector, screen for the projector, and big sheet of plexi-glass using the 45 degree angle technique. Girl is shot on a black background and you did some video editing to make her glowing with a green aura. Am I right? Helluva job you did there, and I'm so gonna try to do this for next a Halloween.. only except I'm going to video shoot my daughter as Tamara from the ring climbing out of a well. heh! heh!

  • goosbumps episodes=) Piano lessons!! awesome!!

  • The glass in front of the stool or behind stool in front of pianio.. Great video!!!

  • @BoogiemanUSA

The glass is in front of everything.

  • My question is what editing program did you use to turn your neighbor into a ghost?

  • @BoogiemanUSA

No editing program necessary. Just goo old fashion smoke and mirrors:-)

  • HOW IN GODS NAME DID YOU DO THAT?!?!?! :D:D:D:D

  • 4' x 7'

  • what are the dimensions of the pane of glass u are using?

  • That looks great, well done!

  • What days will this be running this year? Just Halloween, or for a few days in advance?

  • how

  • we like the style!

  • thumbs up for good work

  • hey guys its fake the ghost seen him/her and didnt attacked or dissappear

and continued singing and the creator is an apple

  • Luigis mansion music anyone?

  • ok ok that's just freakin scary :O

  • edited

  • Beautiful illusion, and flawless song choice using Moonlight Sonata; not cliche yet still a touch melancholy. (And for anyone who remembers playing Resident Evil I'm sure it will bring back some scary memories lol.)

  • amazing video! I've been doing some research into it but still cant figure out how you project on to the foamcore without picking up the reflection of the projector as well. Do you know if there any diagrams illustrating the set up anywhere on the internet, or would you maybe be able to send me one?

  • what's the name of that piano song? please tell me !

  • @omcgh Moonlight Sonata. I play it myself :))

  • @5qu1d

Hey, hmm. Wow, I'm just not getting this, I feel really stupid hah. Can you link to a simple (overhead?) diagram of your setup? I see the projector and glass only.

  • Cool stuff.

Question about the foam core; what does it serve in the equation? Why not just project straight onto the glass? Was the foam cut to resemble the general shape of the girl?

    Thanks.

  • Continued...

Remember, the trick relies on the fact that the glass is acting like like a window and a mirror at the same time. It allows you to see stuff through it (the piano) and stuff reflected in it (the girl).

As for the shape of the foamcore, it's just a rectangle. It doesn't need to conform to the shape of the girl because the image area around the girl is black, and therefore is not visible in the reflection. Though I'm careful not to have too much light in the room.

  • @5qu1d

Hey Ive read this maybe 15 times already lol, I am looking to do a similar effect in my grave yard this year, could you please explain exactly how everything was set up. You executed this perfectly! It is amazing. Im sorry to be a pain I know youve explained it but Im unsure of the placement of everything goes. thanks so much.

  • who is the composer and what is the piece called from this concerto?

  • @kirby90803

It's Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata". Beautiful, sad, and creepy in the right context!

  • The Foamcore is, in effect, a projection screen. You can't project directly onto the glass for a number of reasons.

    1. Since glass is transparent, you won't see anything projected onto it (if it's clean, that is).

    2. Also, anything you project onto it, will also pass through it...landing somewhere you don't want a projection. In this case, on the piano.

    3. Since glass is reflective, all the audience will see is a reflection of the projector bulb shining in their eyes.

  • @5qu1d None of the above is true if the glass is set at 45 degrees

  • how did you do this???

  • this is the same effect used at Disney's Haunted mansion ride. The Pepper Ghost effect/trick

  • Is there any way i can buy a copy of this on dvd from you .Please let me know

  • Any chance you might ask your editor friend for the details about the aura? It's especially interesting because it doesn't fully encircle her, and because it moves at one point in a wave-like motion. You can tell he put some thought into it. I'd love to know the name of the software and the effect, if you get the chance to ask. (And sorry my other post was duplicated.)

  • @lh9789

Sorry, but I've lost contact with that friend. And of course, I have no idea what he used to make the glow. But since we're going back 15 years, and he was a "video" editor, I'm assuming he was using one of the older Quantel systems...like the Henry or the Hal. These days, you could get the same effects with Adobe After Effects. I love the movement of the glow, but I don't like how it doesn't wrap around the bottom. He was thinking the chair would be cutting it off the glow.

  • I had favorited this video long ago, and often watch it as it is like a beautiful mystery to relax with. So imagine my surprise, joy, and extreme gratitude to suddenly see your explanations. Thanks so much for them, and for troubling to set up the unwieldy glass and effect for the enjoyment of others, and for the video.

  • That was wonderfully done. A friend of mien wants me to set up one for his haunted house next year. If I may ask, how ddi you get the aura on it?

  • So am I right??? you had a piece of glass in front of the chair then had a projector and pointed it in the direction of the glass???

  • @SIRJAMESORR

Piece of glass...yes. Projection aimed at the glass...no. There's a white screen off to the left of the window (just out of view). The projector (hidden behind the piano) is aimed at the screen. Yes, the ghost appears in the glass, but what you're seeing, is a reflection of the projected image.

  • How did you do this so big? and without the glass or the material your projecting on insight?

  • @Stringerz

The glass is 7' x 4' and it is in sight, it's just transparent so you don't notice it.

  • How did you do this so big? and without the glass or the material your projecting on insight?

  • That was so cool! How do you do that? How do you make the shimmering green aura? What is the name of that creepy song?

  • @dabrowmj

My friend who was a video editor did the glow as an effect to the original video footage. Not sure exactly what he did to be honest.

The song is the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven.

  • figure in the background at 0:19 looks creepy

  • Amazing. Well done.

  • How is this done?

  • ok how in the world did you do this

  • this is such a cool effect it would be great for haloween

  • Comment removed

  • i'm looking to do something just like that!! how can I get a video of the ghost? is there a download?

  • How can I get a download of her??????

  • This is awesome, great job!

  • The image is blue and with a haze.. did you have to use any special lighting? is this looped on a video that plays continual?

  • Nice work! I pulled off a minor Pepper's Ghost in my haunted house last year, but this is amazing! It looks just like the "ballroom ghosts" in The Haunted Mansion.

  • exceptional!!

  • Well done!

  • Magnificent.

  • exactly how you made step by step to the effect of a transparent blue ghost we have seen through a piece of furniture or any object that-that which appears and disappears? it's too much I also sought to make this the effect of the then very long for my film would be nice to give the trick

  • How did you get the glass to stand up straight without a noticable frame or stand at its bottem? I did this same illusion in my backyard for a few years. On my last year we did a metamorphous illustion with it. Check it out here on youtube. Just go to my video's. I had to build a frame around the glass and then I was able to steak it into the ground. Then built walls coming off of it so there was a dark hall way down towards it at both right angles(I used an old sliding glass door)

  • @Mikebmc

Yep. Sliding glass door. 7' x 4'. No frame at all...that's why you can't see the frame. It's just a sheet of glass. Yes it's dangerous and delicate. I'm on my second sheet:-) It's supported from above by a C-Stand. If you're not familiar with a C-Stand, it's a piece of film-making equipment used for supporting things.

  • How big was the TV you used?

  • @Dragsterwiz

Not a TV, (though these days it could be). It's a projection on a 4' x 5' sheet of white foamcore. The projection is life size.

  • This is cool :) I may have to try something like this this halloween :)

  • at 0:20 you can see the real piano player

  • wow

  • this is one of the best effects ive seen i'd like to know if you could let me in on it .I.d like to set this up for our annual halloween party this year.my name is louis please help thanks

  • This is a great effect im pretty into halloween and look around all the time for the next great thing to have at our annual fright night.this is one of the best effects ive seen could you help me out .And let me know how this is done.my name is louis. let me know when you can

  • hologram just watch the other vids

  • This was awsome! Thanks for posting!

  • O.o awesome. you are the master of effects

  • hi this is the best thing i ever seen! u are very tallented!! any chance you could send me instuctions on how to do this please. my children would love this. thanku for shareing ur tallent.

  • cool... 10/10

  • beautiful ghost best video seen yet

  • come check out my video called the hamburger lady

Its a scary / disturbing video made to display my new prop that i made for halloween... This video contains disturbing imagery and is based off of tthe throbbing gristles song called hamburger lady

please check it out and let me know what you think <3

  • ok what the hell

  • nice computer efffect alright

  • its not a computer effect its a real illusion. google it

  • creepy

  • i love Beethoven. Moonlight Sonata. cool effect btw, i have no clue how you did that but i really like it

  • cool! you should post a tutorial for this.

  • that ghost needs to work on her piano fingering!

  • Beautiful that peppers ghost beautiful!

  • Think you can PM me how to do this? I want to do an effect like this, only with a few other tunes.

  • fair play, thats pretty cool effect. whats the tune on the piano??

  • @rubbelly Moonlight Sonata - Beethoven

  • Actually, you couldn't be more wrong.

Simple science has proven that it's a matter of black background, strong light and good reflection (window) which causes a transparant image of the nearest object behind to replicate opposite it, thanks to light.

I know this, because I've done it; it's scary until you know about it.

  • So I've been watching several videos of this illusion set up in homes and I am just amazed at the authenticity of them and how well they're all done. It's very professional looking. If it easy and relatively cheap?

  • very well made.

  • Really impressive effect! Really good job 5qu1d! The little girl ghost dressed in white and the music (moonlight sonata - Ludwig van Beethoven) are really cliche, but this is pretty cool ;)

  • did the ghost ever come back

  • Im a huge fan of Peppars Ghost and want to do something similar in my home (thru a window) with a pipe organ. Will you take a PM to correspond about specific dimensions, and video details?

Let me know and I'll post my address. - Thanks - Guy

  • the ocasional glance behind her while playing gives it a real errie effect. nice.

  • If i'm not mistaken, this is a yard display in Studio City; I used to go every Halloween until they stopped doing this. Which was a shame, they did a fantastic job! If this is indeed yours, you should have tons more videos of the display; post some more...

  • i have never done this . can u use plexiglass to do it?

  • Plex can work. Just make sure it's scratch free and not cloudy.

  • That is so awesome!

  • That is pretty cool. We did a witch and three cats for our garden, always looking for more Halloween ideas.

  • great pianist

  • wow> thats a good effect . good job

  • how was this done? really trying stuff out. help please.

  • NICE.... Would you be willing to email me that video

The one used to make the peppers ghost

I can find anything online anywhere and that will work perfect for my haunted house

  • awsome video you got to tell me how you did this

  • How did you plan this out?

  • that must have taken a huge piece of glass or acrylic!

    AWESOME!!!!

  • It's a 7'x4' sheet of glass! I used to have two of them...which was a good thing, because one of them broke a few years back.

  • was thinking of doing this a cheaper way, Do ya think shrinkwrap could work?

  • I have no idea. It's worth a try. Something to keep in mind though is the fact that the trick only works if you can't see the glass....or in your case the shrinkwrap. In order for shrinkwrap to work, it will need to be large enough that you can do the entire effect with one piece.

    Good luck.

  • @5qu1d An idea would be to use the stuff you buy to winterize the windows. Its clear, and comes in huge sheets. when you use the hair dryer to shrink it, it becomes transparent.

  • @r4nge

I used plastic window winterizing plastic one year, wrapped around a wooden frame. Essentially, it was a great big piece of shrink wrap, but once we got all the wrinkles out, it worked beautifully. You just have to make sure that you set it up pretty close to when it will be displayed, so it doesn't get dusty or anything. It's very easy to add more wrinkles to it while cleaning. We wound up with somewhere around a 9x9 square to use.

  • @r4nge I have tried something similar with a kind of shrink wrap. But I only suggest using it in the dark and in a small frame, but in theory I could see someone doing it without glass.

  • @5qu1d

Never mind how big the plexi was, what about the telly?!?!

  • @5qu1d

hi this is the best thing i ever seen! u are very tallented!! any chance you could send me instuctions on how to do this please. my children would love this. thanku for shareing ur tallent.

  • @5qu1d how much did the 7x4 run u?

  • This is the best ghost prop I have ever seen. Are you willing to share the video?

  • Хаа ну и фуфло ) почему паутина только на пианино? чего? его специально не протирают, хех полная лажа Fake, not belive

  • Freakin amazing, love, love, love it. Wish I had that!!!

  • WOW! JUST WOW! THIS IS SO AWESOME! :'-DDDDD

omg :DD i loved it! 5 stars! :)

  • very well-executed! 5stars!

  • "There's no post processing done to the video."

Yeah, nice way of misleading the real trick! ;)

Well, at least you're not lying.

  • you should post how to make the effect... I know it's by using the Pepper's Ghost effect, but go through the process... looks great!

  • this is super cool !!!

  • now this is awsum!! xx

  • not real not song piano the girl is not real to digit piano.

  • very well made but my video is real, "the ghost of our neighbour" who died last year we found her image on our window its NOT FAKE

  • Brilliant!

  • where did you hide the white screen? This is amazing, and sets a really nice ambiance.

  • The screen is just to the left of the window, and therefore, out of view. The projector is behind the piano aiming directly at it. In fact you can just see the projector light at the :20 second point, just to the left of the girls head.

  • thank you. Where did you get plate glass that tall?

  • Very well done!

    THanks for posting

  • This is really good :D

  • that is a cool hologram!!

  • How did you get the angles right? Was it trial and error? Beautifully done.

  • No trail and error. It took a lot of planning. I knew I wanted the effect to be seen at a 45 degree angle, so my original photography was set up that way.

When it comes to setting up the effect in the window, everything has to follow that original angle. Actually, that hardest part about the setup is making sure her fingers look like they're contacting the piano keys. The key is that the distance from the glass to the projection screen is equal to the distance of the perceived ghost.

  • really easy to make.....its called Pepper's Ghost Illusion. All you need is a TV, and a sheet of glass. I'm not gonna explain here, you can wiki it up

  • True, it's easy to do the basic effect, especially a small one. But to pull off a large scale one is a different matter. My living room looks more like a film set than a living room on Halloween night. To achieve my life-size ghost, the glass I use is 7 feet tall, and 4 feet wide. A large part of my setup is concerned with hiding the setup from view.

  • Wow she looks so real ya think u can do a ghost bride walking down a hallway w/ one of those candle things that can hold three candles

  • i wanna learn how to do this so me and my friends can make cool movies

  • Beautiful effect.

  • nice...you have a future in movies...

  • Thanks. Coincidentally, I have a past in movies too.

  • How did you make this?

  • peppers ghost illusion\

  • you make this by using a sheet of glass, a black background, a light, and a bright-colored object exaple:white ghost costume.

  • Very well done! GREAT execution of the effect!

  • Amazing work--very good job getting everything lined up so that it looks right from every angle...except inside...

  • mean...it probably doesn't look like anything from inside...

  • very awesome

  • very cool

  • What can I say. As a fellow Halloween enthusiast I must say well done. The best I've seen yet.

  • wow, i'm stunt!! it's the best home effect i've seen so far!! very well made.

  • I do wonder how you were able to make it lifesize. I know you can use a tv shrowded in black to get this affect, but I thought th reflection is only as big as the object. How did you get this lifesize?

  • You're right... the reflection can only be as big as the object. I'm using a video projection, so I can get pretty big. In fact, the real size limitation is the glass. If your image goes off the glass, you "give away the ghost" ^,^

  • It's truely remarkable, are you projecting the image onto a white board and then using the glass to get the reflection? I know if you try to project onto the glass it would go straight threw it. What are you projecting onto?

  • Sorry for the really late reply, but you're right...I projected onto a white screen. What you're seeing is a reflection of that projection. BTW, the ghost was white filmed against a black background. Anything not black in the background would show up in the effect and "give away the ghost."

  • Excellent!!!!!!!

  • so, is this a tv with the video, and a piece of plastic or plexiglass?

  • I think this is one of the best home effects I have seen. That is awesome, I wish I could create something like this for my home halloween display. Great job!!!

  • fake!

  • no shit- but its still pretty damn awesome

  • You mean it's not a REAL ghost?

  • OK, Mister Smarty Pants...

Something tells me you're not paying attention in class. This is a "Pepper's Ghost Effect". That means no green screen. It also means no keying.

  • Very good. Now you're thinking!

Actually if you want to get really technical, the green glow around the ghost was achieved as a post process on the original video shoot. That video was then projected on Halloween night, and the final effect was captured in camera...with no post processing. So yes, my claim still stands.

Thanks for the comments. And don't forget to go to film school. You have a future there:-)

  • Beautiful job! That's really the best piano haunt I've seen! Pepper would be proud.

  • was it a hologram

  • No, just a reflection.

  • very cool and the song too

  • Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

  • what nusic is this?

  • Beautiful! :)
