I read somewhere that Paul McCartney was going to produce Rick's album around this time, but Capitol Records wouldn't allow it because Rick was on a different label and odds are it would've been a huge hit!

Yeah we shouldn't forget Little Ricky (Intveld), Pat Woodward and Bobby Neal. All great guys and had the pleasure of recording them all for what would be the final album...
See how the voice is great live, some many times artists fall down live. I will not say it could of been a come back cause he never left with his legacy, but it could of brought him to the fore front again. What a loss, sadly now they are all gone.
yes he was great the band is great too he was a very good looking guy used watch the show every time to see what he would play or do next here is a comment he had the same lead player Elvis had hime and ricky do you know he was James Burton
Bobby Neal is great too fantastic player they didnt deserve what happen to them some great players I got a freind who played in his band and said he was first
rate very nice humble guy I always liked him a lot
I remember Rick had just got together with the Jordianaires (who sang back-up for Elvis for years) for this. Too bad Rick passed away after this. That would have a great combination. I don't know if this was before or after Evis had passed.I have this one on tape in Rick's documintary by David Nelson it's from a Kenny Roger's show in Canada. That is nice to see.
Should have been a humongous hit! How did the man keep his good looks? So sad that no one knew he would not return to this show and would be gone forever in a few months.
What a terrible loss of a good man and great intertainer as well as an A-1 family man. You'll have to look far and wide to find another man with the knock out looks of Rick Nelson, and what a gorgeous beautiful smile, can you believe he was 45 years old.....he looked like 25!!!! Wow!
@8dakota6 -Hate to burst your bubble but Rick died his hair. He had turned grey in his late 30's. That doesn't detract from his being unquesitonably very good looking, grey or not, and certainly a wonderful talent who left us far too early. BTW he and I share the same birthday, May 8.
He also died in the 12/31/85 plane crash in Texas. "You Know What I Mean" was written by British singer/song writer Mickey Jupp. It might have been a comeback hit for Ricky had he lived and had a chance to promote it. A great performance! Many thanks for posting this. I remember when it first aired back in '85.
With all due respect to the tragic events of January 1953, February 1959, August 1977 and December 1980, for my money, the passing of Rick Nelson at the end of 1985 was the biggest rock & roll disaster of the 20th century. This was ultimately his last hit and to put it mildly, he went out at the top. "You Know What I Mean" certainly ranks alongside of "Believe What You Say", "One Of These Mornings", "Look At Mary", "You Can Dance" & "Let's Talk The Whole Thing Over" as one of his masterpieces.
Thank you so much alapoet for posting this gem! I met Ricky in Tupelo Mississippi,USA in August 1984. Such a sweet and humble guy. I've loved his music since 1960 together with Elvis presley's.
fyi The guitar you see rick playing here indeed was on the plane, however it was a remake of his original guitar, which was stolen backstage at a concert, Im not sure but I believe it was when he hosted sat nite live- it is still out there some where! this was told to me by matthew & gunner nelson, they certainly would like to recover it! I had a duplicateof ricks guitar made and showed it to them, and the actually went on stage and played it during a concert! great guys a real credit to rick!
This is wonderful. Thank you. I often wonder... Whatever happened to that famous guitar of his? I guess it was destroyed during his accident. It would have been a great family heirloom.
Ricky and his band met their end in Jerry Lee Lewis' shit-heap of a plane ( complete with dodgy heater ) whilst attempting to fly to a New Years gig that would have earned them very little. Desperation for a quick buck brought about by Ricky's ex-wife who was apparently bleeding him dry. A similar scenario to Buddy Holly's demise. His decision to go on that last tour was prompted by Buddy's caring, sharing manager Norman Petty's refusal to pay Buddy one cent of the $50k that Petty owed him.
Maybe Ricky was in trouble because of an ex.Buddy Holly was not.Buddy's problems were that he didnt have a manager to look out for him.Lots of rock stars didnt make much money. The guy on the Loving Spoonfull still wont sing the songs he wrote, the record companies still make all or most of the money.
Thank you alapoet for this wonderful memory. I grew up watching Ricky on TV. So these wonderful videos of Rick singing make my heart remember and smile. GOD BLESS

Great performance by Rick of one of his best rockabilly songs IMHO; with surprisingly suggestive lyrics (for him).
"She looks swell in a sweater and her corduroys, she likes men but she likes big boys. Do you know what I mean?"
"Every evening when we do our thing, we stay home 'cos she likes it in. Do you know what I mean?"
"We see what you mean."

Good stuff. Rick and Dave Edmunds must have come from the same egg.

Rick Nelson and the Jordanaires. I gotta say, Rick is my second favorite legendary performer. Second only to Elvis.

A most beautiful person and voice.
What a shame God called him so early in life.
R.I.P. my idol of the 60's,
You have to listen to Ricky sing a beautiful song...AGAIN
A 1949 melody many of Ricky Nelson's fans never heard him sing.
He is romantic...just super !
VIRIATO1942 2 years ago
Charlie Sheen looks a little like him. I think he's around the same age Rick was when this was filmed.

the comparison bugs me...Charlie Sheen is a douche. So I'm gonna say they don't look alike :)

Rick was a classier guy than Charlie, no doubt about that.

soultexx, look for the album called "Best of Ricky Nelson: Teenage Idol." It was released on the Castle label in 2000.
It's a good 22-track collection, and "You Know What I Mean" is track 11.
