I think Kirk was more creative and original sounding in his earlier days. I've been listening to some of the solos from Death Magnetic and some are ok, but some sound terrible. They're drenched in wah and a lot of them sound like random notes on the high E running down the neck. I really enjoy Metallica's older music, but I'm starting to think maybe they are losing it. Kinda sad in a way. I guess we all lose our youth at some point.

Yeah, that's when the overuse of the wah came into action. But the solo to "The Struggle Within" is damn smokin'. I actually picture the strings and fretboard smoking afterward, lol. Lazy is actually a good word. I mean, some of the newer songs have some awesomeness to them, but it's just not the same, I guess. Plus Death Magnetic is lacking bass, in my opinion. I can hear as much bass on DM as AJFA. Newsted's bass stood out the most out of any Metallica record.

Both Kirk and Marty are very good at what they do... but Friedman is the virtuoso in this battle. Hell he even played with Jason Becker in Cacophony! One can prefer the way Kirk plays but Marty is the more skilled player.

Learn your facts. Dave wrote some solo on KEA but Kirk RETAPED them. Go listen to the demo version and the real version and you'll see it's totally not the same thing.
