Real-world Super Mario Bros background? It is a struggle to reconcile my desire to watch this incredibly visually compelling video with my compulsive need to look away to avoid nausea. My brain does not know what to make of what it is seeing, but my mind keeps trying to overlay a Cartesian plane on top of the image and revisit my trig class in HS. Observing an otherwise flat horizon turn into a sine wave (and then other trigonometric lines) is apparently more than I can comfortably handle.
really creative idea that came out great! looks like the panorama shot you achieved covers about 180 degrees or so since it's the same shot repeating itself over and over, but the shot changing as the aircraft changes its direction... wonder if you could slow the frame rate or whatever down enough to create one fluid 360 degree panorama, or does that not make any sense? lol
during stable flight, the amount of horizons you see in one second is the difference of the frequency of the camera versus the rpsec of the blade (it should be rounded off in thousandths of a sec i believe). you can also tell when there is a load (ascending, descending) if the horizons pan left or right. nice video. if i didnt explain this right, please correct me.
No, it is just that in forward flight the helicopter is leaning forward and thus the camera sees alternatively sky and earth because of slight asynchronism
@fthirud The distortion is mostlikely also because many digital cameras use a rolling shutter, which means it doesnt capture the whole frame at the same time.
@CehLops The camera captures, lets say, 50 frames per second. If the rotor spins 50 times per second, then the camera will be in approximately the same place each time it captures a frame. The speed of the rotor varies slightly which gives the distorted effect.
It would be interesting to see a PIP, with the videos synched, showing the helo from a camera on the ground, or mounted on the tail or somthing, to not have to do mental gymnastics to figure out what it is doing when things change in the rotorcam.
i've been doing similar things with a mini wireless camera - but the motot i have won't match the camera's scan rate in quite the same way. this is beautiful - nice work!
@gamehead91 If you spin everything around you fast enough in a constant circular path with you at the centre, it will seem as if everything is still. or similarly if everything is stationary and you spin fast enough. like how the rotation of wheels on fast enough cars seem to not revolve(im not refering to those gansta tricked out spinning rims)
That is so cool. It would be interesting to see other synchronized cams, like from the tail and/or from the ground, to see what maneuvers are being done.
you should put it right at the end of the blade so there's no obstructions, and then make a big mount to hold the helicopter in place (and maybe use a counter weight on the other side?) and yea....film like you normally would so you'd have control over what its viewing kind of thing?
@fruitflyproductions Uh no. It is more interesting as it is to give the warping of the blade as a reference to understand the warping of the image as a result. Fascinating and thumbs up if you think gizmodo is a Jewish run NeoNazi website.
@sasquash12 cheaper / smaller digital cameras mostly use whats called a "rolling shutter". It basically scans the image as you take it, wich means the frames / pictures are actually recorded (although very fast ) rather than the whole image captured at once. An example of a rolling shutter camera is for example your cell phone. Hence the weird distortions when you take pictures of fast moving objects / move the camera fast.
So regarding this "rolling shutter effect", I had an observation. When the sine wave's amplitude peaks, the distortion in the middle of the wave looks like there is a higher pixel density representing a smaller geographical area of the scenery? I wonder if that's just a illusion?
Anyone notice the horizon looks like a sine wave? Probably has to do with how the rotors cyclically oscillate to steer, but I'm sure something useful could come of it.
You entered another dimension, just saying.
