A coma for 6 months... that's nasty. Mine was only a bit over a month. There's nothing I can suggest. There is some talk (in the world) about neuroplasticity, which means there's hope for making recovery from TBI, but no-one seems to know yet how to take advantage of neuroplasticity, because no programs or exercises have been developed for it yet that I've found. I'll keep an eye out though.
Hi, I am a survivor of TBI myself and receive very little help because there isn't much out there for us. I can tell you that from your story, he is doing remarkably well to just be able to hold a job and stay focused. Try state based organizations and you may find help. YaHuWaH be with you!
@cdkillen Thank you so much for resonding. You're right there is little out there. But through his sister he was able to get into the VA hospital. Now he's doing buch better although they say things will never be as before. I hope you're doing well.
I have a brain injury I have no amygdala and cannot experience love, joy and happiness from an accident that happened 3 years ago.
I have made a major discovery that lucid dreaming, God and the pineal gland is saving my life. I found out when your conscious enough to speak during a lucid dream it causes a miracle to happen.
if the accident was a year earlier, and he was in a coma for 6 months,- he has had an unbelievable fast recovery. I STRESS "unbelievable".
My husband had a TBI 3 yrs ago and I don't believe your story.
Bring your son-in-law on camera.
Your video is an insult to all of us who have to suffer with real TBI, and loved ones who can't do ANY type of work. You might get help with discount medications. There is no help. pick another injury to pull a Scam with
@Fringe111 The longer the coma (term is "unresponsive"), then the more severe the brain damage. A 6 mos coma indicates severe damage that would not heal sufficiently for your son in law to be working again 1 yr after the injury( - 6 mos after becoming 'responsive'). I'm not heartless and I DO know what I'm talking about. I deal with it every day. There are too many things about your story that don't fit. A TBi is THE most devastating injury. View the videos on the right column and see.
@macpduff Also, anyone who would think that a story like this would be made up is just stupid. From what his doctors tell us he may regress right now. Man you're heartless
Go to DVR (Vocational Rehab) and they will help; also Behaviour Health resources...and many other state run offices. I do not know what state ur in. Hope that helps
I am a TBI Thriver who is also considered somewhat of a "walking miracle." I currently serve as Montana;s TBI Project Coordinator and welcome your call at my office number: 406-657-2172 I might be able to offer some helpful insights and suggestions. Hope this New Year is the very best ever for you and your son in law...a fellow TBI Thriver! Ian
@Fringe111 Glad that somebody decided to help. My son is the consequence of a severe closed head injury, spinal cord injury. Our lives are forever changed. !5 years and still hoping!
I'm sorry for the delay on your comment I just got it. The place you're talking about sounds like what he needs. Thanks for the info I'll check it out.
Your son in law sounds like a very sensitive and intuitive man who has been able to be very articulate in sharing his frustration's with you. I have had personal experience with the effects of closed and open head injury and must tell you everything sounds pretty normal at this stage. Especially the grave financial difficulty he is experiencing. His sense of self worth is likely depreciating more than their bank book. That stress undermines even those who do not have a disability.
You must be very careful not to over extend yourself financially, you are not an enabler because he just can't be the breadwinner he was in that field, you are a dear and loving person. Unless you are very wealthy a TBI can put the family in the poor house. With a split brain injury he would be greatly helped by having some diagnostics done by a neuro-psychologist and find his strengths. Depression is a serious concern andv follows most tbi survivors. What big city is closest? I can find Dr.
Thank you so much, your words meant alot to me because I do feel guilty that I can't do anything for him. We live in Naples Florida. 50 miles from Tampa
I had a brain injury, which I have recovered from almost fully. My biggest passion before the accident was basketball, but I can't play that anymore because of the accident, so your son needs to learn that many things after these injuries change. As for the help, If you take him to a psychiatrist he will be able to point you in the direction of organizations that can help. ABI's club is the name of one by me ( aquired brain injured students) good luck
Thank you so much for your advice. It's so good to hear that you're doing great now. I have to take him to see a psychiatrist but the problem is he's the kind of person who doesn't believe in them. He's so dam stubborn
I don't know why this guy told me to F off. Hope you saw the article listed on my site. I don't know why this person has a problem, do you know, that brain chip could help alot of people and possibly him.
Welcome to the frustrating world of post TBI, I look fine too but suffer so many of the symptoms you describe: fatigue, depression, sometimes the inability to do cognitive thinking and the frustration. I've had a Cognitive Retrainer who has tried to help me return , a neuro therapist. My neurologist has finally found medications (Provigal and Welbrutron) that has allowed me somewhat of a normal life. Also, there can still be progress after the first year, I still see slow improvement.
I'm hearing so many stories like yours and mine. But I never hear anyone really talking about how devastating this can be. All my prayers are with you
I am a motorcycle passenger survivor- we were hit by a car. 21 yrs post you could pass me on the street and never know but come spend the day with me and it will be apparent. CHI/TBI was my diagnosis also with brain surgery. Anyone who has a tbi has permenant damage. What state are you in? First you need to contact the Brain Injury Assoc. For your state. Also, buy "Brain Injury Medicine" it will be a constant resource for you as well as knowing me.
Seriously, buy the book "Brain Injury Medicine" it covers everything. Second, find your toll free BIAA (Brian Injury Assoc of America) chapter for your state. They will have resources for you.
In many respects i understand how he feels. like others I myself am a TBI survivor been 2yrs & like him I also did not have insurance & had to manage most of my therapy on my own. I was told by doctors, counselors, therapists that i could better (improve) my brain just by Reading. Read as much as possible, so i enrolled into college. When I watch tv I set the Captions On. at times I make it a pt. to watch inspirational movies. Anything as simple as Rocky, Forrest Gump, Remember the Titans.
most definitely =) currenly i major in Psychology. Helps ease the burden of depresssion knowing Not ONE is prefect despite appearance or outlook in life. Lotsa C-R-A-Z-I-E-S out there haha. "Patch Adams" was the movie I came to terms with most. that recently i foundout 1 of my Psych profs is a TBI survivor too, so in no way should he feel smaller than the rest of the world. He survived an injury others may not =( he should pride himself & enjoy life best way he can nvr lose hope. TY Fringe111
It is me again... a speech therapist is not for him being to talking just fine.. I learned that. I have been to one already.. It is harder than hell ... i had to figure out shapes and doing numbers backwards and i cant remember it all .. but he needs to go to a DOC phisiatrist for sure to get him to the correct DOCS. sorry for all the comments but I am living this brain injury.
The depression is horrible. You live in your mind all day long.. you can not escape it. No body understands... I mean no one but yourself if you have the brain injury. It is the worst thing in life living in your mind that does not work the way it used to. Being positive is easy in life if your brain works. Tell him life is not fair and you feel for him...that helps me deal with it more than people telling me to be possitive constantly.
Thank you, I tell him that all the time but the problem is he feels he's OK now since he's working. Nothing could be further then the truth. Depression is the word here
He is dealing with a death... the death of who he once was. I feel for him....I do not know why there are not support groups out there. There are none where I live. I think it would be easier to deal with losing a leg or a arm than lose some or a lot of who you were. I feel for your son in law. Getting into the correct Docs will help. My depression is better from starting with my team of Docs... you first start with a Physiatrist.
I hear that. There are no support groups down here either and if there were he wouldn't go. We're dealing with a very stubborn man here. I pray you will find the strength to get through this
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST! The therapist will help him work with solving problems a different way than normal brain people can do. I have a closed head injury as well. I know what your son in law is going through. Get him a "GOOD" Occupational therapist. If he sees a doctor called Physiatrist.. he will get him to all the doc's he needs for his brain.
Thanks for your reply I'm glad to hear your son's accepted help, I can totally relate to that feeling of having to drop the pride. I still must remain myself of that in different situations & areas of my life. But when Im able to drop it at appropriate times it opens doors mentally coupled with some patience and tolerance it allows me to learn the appropriate relevant essentials to whatever Im striving for.
Everything you just said here is true. James is just know starting to get it. He's stuborn as hell and he doesn't like to take any help. Well after we basically pushed him into this help he's staying with it. So far it's working. I also think that my daughter is being helped through this also
Pride will often cause me to run away from this out of fear of inability to accomplish the task followed by perceived ridicule and humiliation I will get from others..
My mind can be the biggest either: defeater or a starting point toward what I want/need to achieve. The choice is mine.
& I cant beat myself up if I run away sometimes I just have to pick it up and go seeking something that will renew my sense of faith in the system with me included in it- of course ha ha...

I had a brain injury 19yrs ago coma 1 1/2 mths , alot of physical disability. Never able to maintain F-T employment but finished 50 courses in college, my stock broker license 10 yrs ago. Did it with the help of a learning centre- Turnbull - Ottawa, Ontario. Pegging old memory to new, used visual memory, acronymns, sometimes songs to remember.
That's wonderful that you could get that license after what you went through. James was also in coma for a month. Now he works but things are very hard for him cognitively. He's now getting the help he refused for so long.
The idea that a person gets back to 100% has to be disguarded it just doesn't happen in any tbi case. I must accept my limitations. I'll admit it is not easy but acceptance that is the key to having some peace of mind.
Recommend a psychologist/nerologist,learning centre -they can determine how he learns, recalls and have specific strategies to difficulties he's experiencing. best of luck.
Thank you Sean, James is now with a learning group. It took him a long time for his pride to go away and accept the help he needs. It's slow going though
Depending on which part of the brain was damaged.... with frontal lobe injuries, they often don't seen or comprehend the problems. ie: saying the wrong words, etc. Even if he can do a lot of things himself, one might tell him that there are things only a support group can understand and help him with. There are also some great books about coping with Brain injury. I did alot of studying about the brain on my own, too.
The problem with James is that he is to prous for his own good. He thinks he's just fine except he will acknowledge that he can think as clearly as before. He makes me crazy, but of course I already told him about what you said. I thank you
P.S. Almost everyone is denied on the first try for Social Security. One friend w/ multiple TBI's, it took 5 tries. Get a Soc. Sec. attorney. Even though they take 25% of the initial amount, it's worth it. There are also disability tax exemptions they can apply for to receive tax breaks on property taxes.
Thank you so much for your messages. We are trying again for SSI and now have a lawyer. I will check out that group you mentioned but James is still in that "I can take care of myself " mode
Look for a Brain Injury Support Group in your area through the Brain Injury Association in your state. I have a mild brain injury & have made wonderful friends & contacts from my local BIA. It took me about 8 years to let go of what I used to be able to do and accept what I can do now. Having friends who do have brain injury are so valuable. They know what it feels like to have a part of their brain missing.... Very good luck & healing & happiness to you & your loved one....
i was told that if you can get social security disablity that you get a buch of occupational rehab..
i had a cloesed head injury several years ago. i am unable to do alot that i used to do also...there is also a high suicide rate with head injury...
my doctors include the southern college of optometry. a psychiatrist for depression, a psycologist, a nerologist. i need to apply for ss disability so i can get into rehab...it's too expencive otherwise.
Thanks for commenting. He tried to get SS disability and has denied. He's going to try again with a lawyer this time. My State Florida is not to friendly to dissabled people. He has fallen into a deep depression. We are just amazed how little help is out there for him. It's just terrible
I don't know anything about closed-head brain injuries. But you were vague about the particulars of his job. I would suggest he look into other lines of work if that is something he would consider. Necessity is the mother of invention.
There is the Center for Comprehensive Services in Carbondale, IL. It is a residential facility. The program can include vocational training, social skill training, behavioral, and cognitive-communication therapy. As With most programs it is important you remain an integral part of the program and are trained yourself as well as monitor his progress. Good luck on your journey!
i think we're past the 120 level stuff at this point b1gtree.
it sounds liek you're really institutionalizing something thats going to benefit from your perspective should you choose to ardess these issues personally. i have some experience with brain injury, but i lived my entire life with a member of the family who doesnt have normal adult mental abilities. in addition, ive got a couple degrees in thinking. if you'd like i can give you my take on the situation when there's some space
I too am a grad student in speech pathology and am actually doing a project on traumatic brain injury. The difficulties you describe him having are typical of TBI, and can be addressed in speech thearpy. Consider looking to see if there are any universities in your area that have speech path prgms...they usually tend to have full clinics for both individual and group therapy, at a MUCH more affordable cost (for example, $300.00 for biweekly, 10-week sessions). Give that a try and good luck!
I thank you so much for your comments. Since I did this video his speech has returned to normal but his brain deficits are there. You couldn't tell just by speaking to him but for instance, he is unable to do the job he used to do because the brain connections have been severed. The worst of it is, he knows it and is falling into depression and his temper is exelerating. Thank you so much
I am an occupational therapist that works with people with brain injury in NY. You need to find a neuro-rehabilitation that specializes in community and vocational reintegration. They provide cognitive retraining and compensatory training to help him improve those pieces that are still missing. You can definitely get help for him!!!! PS. Occupational therapy is a profession that works on all "skills for living," not just work retraining.
Thank you so much, but he's beyond that. He speaks and now works just fine, but he still cannot do the types of calculations and reasing thought he once used to do. It also makes him very frustrated.
I've worked with people many years post injury on various cognitive issues. When I said neuro-rehab, I meant out-patient. If you tell me what state you are in I will look it up for you. I have helped people that were back to work but still felt they were not as efficient or couldn't multi-task, etc. It is never too late to work on improving even the "smallest" issues.
Have your considered having a Speech and Langugage evaluation done? I am a graduate student in Speech and Language Pathology right now and we have been studying about closed head TBI's in my Neuroanatomy of Speech and Language course. Although his speech isn't impaired, he may benefit from language therapy. His problem solving could be targeted in therapy and maybe other deficits he hasn't noticed could be discovered.
OK, you probably know better then I. His speech is fine, but it's the connections that allow him to think a problem out the way used to do and he knows it. We have him scheduled for a re-eveluation in a couple of weeks. Thank you so much for any thoughts you may have
I wen't through a BI experience. I know this can be frustrating, frightening, and seem hopeless. It's very important to view this from every angle. Getting involved in the brain injury community, including online discussion and in your community if possible, can make a tremendous difference. So-called invisible illnesses such as brain injury are the last "domain" of out-of-the-closet bigotry and moralization used in a cruel way.
I got your letter, thank you so much for all that information. He's now at a state that he's feeling sorry for himself and puts off going for the re-evaluation he needs. He's also regressing. I don't know what to do anymore. I've contacted everyone for him, he just refuses to make that call.
Is there a college or hospital that has a tbi program? A local community college here has such a program. He also needs to make sure he is getting all the benefits from the County where he lives (ie medical help, SSI, Social Securiy disability, etc.) A good lawyer can help him get SS disability benefitws.
hi, just saw your request. i'm a tbi survivor, and a sw, working w/ tbi pts/families at hospital. there are some programs [ie texas had dars, either to retrain/rehab]. my hopes/prayers are with ya'll, keep hope alive, mike
time will do good...i had mine because of anoxia (i threw up in my sleep) see i used to be a very good guitar player but not now...i went to the tbi program in smyrna tennessee and its called the tennessee rehabilitation center...and i learned all about brain injury there girl and hey KEEP THE FAITH K... WITH LOVE, DERRICK WHITE
Hello, I am a survivor of TBI. The more time passes, the better the brain heals.
I am not sure if you are in the US but I will tell you that you should look into something called BVR (burau of vocational rehab). They essentally help you find a job or asess the jod the survivor already has. They may help you in iducation after a tbi, althogh I am not certain. Some states offer it thogh. It s woth a shot. Good luck in everything.
Thank you so much for answering me. Since I made this vid I've gotten alot of advice. He is registered with BVR but they haven't gotten around to him yet to re-evalute him yet. We live in south Florida, it's frustrating that their are taking their time getting to him. I thnk you so much and to you please take care of yourself
Hello, my name is Jim. My neurologist after my accident was Dr. Marc Hines in Ottumwa, Iowa. Dr. Hines is quite well knwon for his treatment of brain injuries. of state. You may consider making contact with his office to review your medical information. Dr. Hines is an extortionatel brilliant Neurologist. If he is unable to help you possibly he can refer you to someone in your area.
Your so very welcome. I'm glad to help anyone who is in the same boat. It was so hard to find good help. I was a police man, and forced to retire. Keep your heads up, keep fighting, I still have problems, but I feel great after 15 years in hell. If I can do anything to help, ask!
I have a brain injury and I went through alot of hell trying to adapt to post injury life. Mostly because I was considered recovered by my doctors and the people who cared for me. The emotional and physical effects which go unseen were really damaging to my life because they remained unacknowledged. I really needed someone to stop me sliding into depression. Its very important you find him help as soon as possible with a new job and his emotional state.
That's exactly what's happening to him now. But he just got a new job all on his own with no help. They know about his injury. Thank you so much for answering this, you have no idea how much this helps to know
I am a post subarrachnoid haemorrhage & hv hd zero spprt bth at home & medical system in terms of the things that go unnoticed. people have seen the anger, depression & just yelled back at me for it or given me the "count ur blessings" bit. professional help is also impt. as they can show u how to get back on track & profession. I am stuck with no help & its been 3.5 yrs!! needless to say life is pretty dark dismal with no-one to share with. has taken me an effort to write this out...(in tears)
Hey. I wanted to send you a longer email but just havn't got around to it yet. I live in australia and one organization that really helped me was Commonwealth Rehabilitative Services (They have a brain injury division). Their Neuropsychologist helped me alot. They may have something like this in NZ. If you can you should try and go to a group for people recovering from brain injuries. It can really help just being around others who somewhat know where your coming from.
You know I just saw this? I'm missing messages and I apologize, YT must be acting up again. I'm so glad you found help. I'm going to take your advice and seek out others who have the same type of injury. James is becomming depressed and won't make that call to get the eveluation he needs. He's regressing
Man I think somethings wrong with You Tube. I never got this message. I'm so sorry that you're having such a hard time, You can always PM me with whatever you need to get off your chest. Please don't forget that. Take care
Utube, I think, changed its method of how replys to comments are dealt with and displayed. I was leaving a note for tanhaarooh so no need to worry. James may just need to be dragged to an appropriate brain injury support group whether he likes it or not ( of course only if its appropriate ). I may be generalizing but I wish someone had done it for me. I hope things get better for James. Regards Nathan.
one year ago..wow. he is still 'fresh'. he sounds like how i was one year post. i was told that most of your recovery takes 2 years and pretty much peaks then. after a year with me, i still had gains and i think he will too.
all i can say is, in my opinion, the only true cure is time. as time goes by, you slowly start accepting what has happened and start being happy again and able to move on.
with me, early in my recovery, when i started to realize that the old me was never gonna be around anymore, only this new me, i had a hard time accepting that and wouldnt. i like the old me and hard a very hard time saying good bye to it.
yes, some of us get dealt better hands then others. your friend, like myself, got dealt crap, but theres nothing we can do about it, but just play with the hand that we have and move on. i know this is hard to deal with, but what can we do.
We can't have that attitude anymore. If you noticed the internet is breaking down the barriers that we could never do in the past. We can't sit back anymore and just let things happen to us.
it wasnt the same. i could only handle and do easy tasks. when given a more challanging task, i got very frustrated and upset. after 16 months, i decided i can no longer do it. it was my dream and cause of black on a bend in the road, its taken from me. i am now going back to school and trying to get something else.
That's wonderful. I applaud you. I see James struggling every day with what's happened to him. He's very frustrated and I think he's starting to realise he'll never be the same.
your story sounds very, very similar to mine. i too suffered a servere brain injury in december 2004. atthe time of the accident, i was an accountant and after 14 months, i was able to return to work.
Have you found anything for your son? Speech pathologists can treat people with head injury to retrain or learn compensatory strategies for attention, memory, problem solving, etc.
The problem is, because of his brain damage he's unable to concentrate on a taske for the required time. The sad thing is, he's aware of this and it's frustrating as hell to him. Thanks for the suggestion though. He needs further help.
I had a closed head braim injury in 2000. I was as bad or worse than this person. I was a college professor at the time. Now I do motivational speaking on my book about overcoming adversity.
My book would help this person. Contact me, if you like.
Bill Jarvis, co-leader of TBI Support Group, Fort Wayne, Indiana
I don't know what to tell you other than I wish him well and this is so terribly unfortunate. I believe that at some point it will get better. It is good to hear he is able to still carry on loving and living. ((hugs))
I have no suggestions on how to help but I will keep praying for yout son in law.I wish I could help you more wish I knew the answers but Im not sure i your a christian or not but i you are God brought him this far and Im sure he will never leave his side.
I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions really. I just wanted to let you know I was sorry to hear about your son-in-laws condition and hope that he makes the fullest recovery possible. It's really great that he has a supportive boss who he has a good relationship with.
information in there may be of help since the techniques of Recovery Inc. also help with anxiety and feelings of disappointment. It teaches one to not punish oneself for "not measuring up."
My thoughts are with you and your family Joy. I wish you the best. Maybe attending group meetings of others with similar injuries would help you to network and find information of what they are going through and what they are doing and what kind of help is out there. Take care my friend. :)
My brain injury was minor compared to his, and I suffer from memory loss and I can't do many things I once could. We just kept looking until we found a Neurologist that would listen and was understanding. He has helped me tremendously. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
I have epilepsy and went into status epilepticus in the year 2000. I had three bleeds in my brain. I was in a drug induced coma. I had to go to rehab for a very long time afterwards. I don't remember that time in my life. I'm now on disability because of my seizures. Your son-in-law may want to consider seeing a really good neurologist and get re-evaluated (if he hasn't already).(cont.)
There are occupational therapists to assess him and to help him do and get the work he is able to do! There is a foundation set up by Christopher & Dana Reeve! Maybe he would be eligible! Check online!I'll check as well & get back to you!
Hi, I'm an trauma icu nurse.I have more answers of the hospital type, not so much in the rehab portion. I do know it is normal not to be normal after an injury. The hosp. should have referal places too, or the social wks there.
I am so sorry to hear this. My friend who is 67 dated a man who had the same problems. I think he was an accountant and could not do figures anymore. He graduated from Wharton Business School. Same school as Donald Trump.
He would become frustrated. I think a new Cat scan should be performed by a neurosurgeon. I will talk to my friend. I think a teaching hospital would be the first place to start. John Hopkins University, Thomas Jefferson University, and University of Pennsylvania are three of the best in the country.
I feel he should get out of that career. The brain recompensates differently. So, have you noticed there is something he is better at that he wasn't before? Thank God he has recovered so wonderfully.
Gosh...that is something else and quite heart-wrenching. I'm lucky to say i don't know of anybody who's gone through this. I hope you and your family are handling this okay. Peace!
That's OK anakin, I just had to put it out there. But you should see the amount of information I got that I never thought possible. Good information. You Tube can be a marvelous place.
I would definantly suggest having him get reffered to a specialist to get evaluated. I do know someone that had a closed brain injury but effected differently than you son-in-law. My hubby's sister has trouble walking or talking when she is overstimulated by stress or emotion. It has been several years since she had the accident and still has not recovered either.
Hey I found it Fringe sorry YouTube was acting up. I have a few whos mother in law had a similar injury. I attempted to call after I saw this and left a message, I will be glad to send over any info he might have as soon I hear back. Be well.
ok im not being silly here but he could start his own safety company, he would just have to go and talk to companys workers about being safe while driving a motorcycle, he can even make a video and sell it, i just saw one a guy made after he was in a explosins and was burned all over his body and what he had to go throu, kind of like a scare you safe stuff.. lots of money to be made in this..
he's lucky to have you in his corner - I think the previous commenters have left some good advice. Alas, I know nothing along these lines and am not in the US. Good idea to see put this out there.
I'm not sure of what state he's in, but if you look up traumatic brain injury in his state or regionally, you might find something. I used to work for an organization that had TBI programs. I'll send an email with more info.
This does sound like it could be guided in large part by depression. I wish I had access to someone or something that could help you and your son-in-law, I really do. Seems to me that given their financial situation, he could easily qualify for some very affordable regular therapy. Especially if he's on some kind of permanent disability.
*Sending all the positive energy your way that I possibly can*
Yes I would say a re-evaluation is a good course of action. He needs to have more scans and more therapy with his condition. He may never be able to do some things but he may very well be trained to do many things. But I know some folks and I'll send them your video to see if they have any suggestions.
Sorry that was so vague but there are so many variables.I do know,as akfhome27 suggests, there is help out there.Inquire at medical universities as well,Neuro-types.I do encourage you all with hope and best wishes.
I was told that certain exercises/therapies can enable retraining of the brain(case specific of course),in my case FAR LESS serious, yet very successful, explained to me at the time as a kind of re-routing my brain's processes, retraining the brain if you will.I went from having NO short term memory at the "crises" point to the odd blank moment at worse.I can't help anymore, being in another country and a totally different kind of case but I hope this helps somehow.
Because of my disease I know that there are therapist's called " cognitive therapy " Now whether or not this is the ave you need I am not sure. But they specialize in the field of teaching people to use what "wires" work and teach new methods for the ones that do not. Maybe you could ask them if they work with closed brain injuries. My guess would be, if they dont, they would know who would. Their called Cognitive therapists. I hope this helps him and your family :)
google "closed head brain injury support"- there are some links that might help. to me, it sounds like he might need a therapist to help him deal with limitations he faces now. just some thoughts. peace.

There is no help. pick another injury to pull a Scam with
macpduff 1 year ago
@macpduff What? You don't believe me? OMG you don't kno what your talking about. He's declining right before our eyes right now.
Fringe111 1 year ago
@Fringe111 The longer the coma (term is "unresponsive"), then the more severe the brain damage. A 6 mos coma indicates severe damage that would not heal sufficiently for your son in law to be working again 1 yr after the injury( - 6 mos after becoming 'responsive'). I'm not heartless and I DO know what I'm talking about. I deal with it every day. There are too many things about your story that don't fit. A TBi is THE most devastating injury. View the videos on the right column and see.
macpduff 1 year ago
@macpduff Also, anyone who would think that a story like this would be made up is just stupid. From what his doctors tell us he may regress right now. Man you're heartless

FFKF167 2 years ago
You must be very careful not to over extend yourself financially, you are not an enabler because he just can't be the breadwinner he was in that field, you are a dear and loving person. Unless you are very wealthy a TBI can put the family in the poor house. With a split brain injury he would be greatly helped by having some diagnostics done by a neuro-psychologist and find his strengths. Depression is a serious concern andv follows most tbi survivors. What big city is closest? I can find Dr.
FFKF167 2 years ago
Thank you so much, your words meant alot to me because I do feel guilty that I can't do anything for him. We live in Naples Florida. 50 miles from Tampa
Fringe111 2 years ago
I had a brain injury, which I have recovered from almost fully. My biggest passion before the accident was basketball, but I can't play that anymore because of the accident, so your son needs to learn that many things after these injuries change. As for the help, If you take him to a psychiatrist he will be able to point you in the direction of organizations that can help. ABI's club is the name of one by me ( aquired brain injured students) good luck

It is me again... a speech therapist is not for him being to talking just fine.. I learned that. I have been to one already.. It is harder than hell ... i had to figure out shapes and doing numbers backwards and i cant remember it all .. but he needs to go to a DOC phisiatrist for sure to get him to the correct DOCS. sorry for all the comments but I am living this brain injury.
raquelhldy 2 years ago
The depression is horrible. You live in your mind all day long.. you can not escape it. No body understands... I mean no one but yourself if you have the brain injury. It is the worst thing in life living in your mind that does not work the way it used to. Being positive is easy in life if your brain works. Tell him life is not fair and you feel for him...that helps me deal with it more than people telling me to be possitive constantly.
raquelhldy 2 years ago
Thank you, I tell him that all the time but the problem is he feels he's OK now since he's working. Nothing could be further then the truth. Depression is the word here
Fringe111 2 years ago
He is dealing with a death... the death of who he once was. I feel for him....I do not know why there are not support groups out there. There are none where I live. I think it would be easier to deal with losing a leg or a arm than lose some or a lot of who you were. I feel for your son in law. Getting into the correct Docs will help. My depression is better from starting with my team of Docs... you first start with a Physiatrist.
raquelhldy 2 years ago
I hear that. There are no support groups down here either and if there were he wouldn't go. We're dealing with a very stubborn man here. I pray you will find the strength to get through this
Fringe111 2 years ago

Pegging old memory to new, used visual memory, acronymns, sometimes songs to remember.
seanth014 3 years ago
That's wonderful that you could get that license after what you went through. James was also in coma for a month. Now he works but things are very hard for him cognitively. He's now getting the help he refused for so long.
Thank you for your message
Fringe111 3 years ago
The idea that a person gets back to 100% has to be disguarded it just doesn't happen in any tbi case. I must accept my limitations. I'll admit it is not easy but acceptance that is the key to having some peace of mind.
Recommend a psychologist/nerologist,learning centre -they can determine how he learns, recalls and have specific strategies to difficulties he's experiencing. best of luck.
Sean..

I did alot of studying about the brain on my own, too.
filmchick123 3 years ago
The problem with James is that he is to prous for his own good. He thinks he's just fine except he will acknowledge that he can think as clearly as before. He makes me crazy, but of course I already told him about what you said. I thank you

P.S. Almost everyone is denied on the first try for Social Security. One friend w/ multiple TBI's, it took 5 tries. Get a Soc. Sec. attorney. Even though they take 25% of the initial amount, it's worth it. There are also disability tax exemptions they can apply for to receive tax breaks on property taxes.
filmchick123 3 years ago
Thank you so much for your messages. We are trying again for SSI and now have a lawyer. I will check out that group you mentioned but James is still in that "I can take care of myself " mode
Fringe111 3 years ago
Look for a Brain Injury Support Group in your area through the Brain Injury Association in your state. I have a mild brain injury & have made wonderful friends & contacts from my local BIA. It took me about 8 years to let go of what I used to be able to do and accept what I can do now. Having friends who do have brain injury are so valuable. They know what it feels like to have a part of their brain missing.... Very good luck & healing & happiness to you & your loved one....

In general people with this type of injury benefit from the following:
1. selecting a vocation that brings a sense of purpose in their lives.
2. a structured work environment
3. ensured success
4. positive reinforcement for their performance on a regular basis
It is very difficult to admit that you are not the same person you were before the injury. He is very lucky to have such a supportive mother in law
b1gtree 3 years ago

PS. Occupational therapy is a profession that works on all "skills for living," not just work retraining.
treyreneepops 3 years ago
Thank you so much, but he's beyond that. He speaks and now works just fine, but he still cannot do the types of calculations and reasing thought he once used to do. It also makes him very frustrated.
Fringe111 3 years ago
I've worked with people many years post injury on various cognitive issues. When I said neuro-rehab, I meant out-patient. If you tell me what state you are in I will look it up for you. I have helped people that were back to work but still felt they were not as efficient or couldn't multi-task, etc. It is never too late to work on improving even the "smallest" issues.

Oh that would be awesome. I live in Florida. Thank you

Have your considered having a Speech and Langugage evaluation done? I am a graduate student in Speech and Language Pathology right now and we have been studying about closed head TBI's in my Neuroanatomy of Speech and Language course. Although his speech isn't impaired, he may benefit from language therapy. His problem solving could be targeted in therapy and maybe other deficits he hasn't noticed could be discovered.
achikenugget 4 years ago
OK, you probably know better then I. His speech is fine, but it's the connections that allow him to think a problem out the way used to do and he knows it. We have him scheduled for a re-eveluation in a couple of weeks. Thank you so much for any thoughts you may have
Fringe111 4 years ago
I wen't through a BI experience. I know this can be frustrating, frightening, and seem hopeless. It's very important to view this from every angle. Getting involved in the brain injury community, including online discussion and in your community if possible, can make a tremendous difference. So-called invisible illnesses such as brain injury are the last "domain" of out-of-the-closet bigotry and moralization used in a cruel way.

Is there a college or hospital that has a tbi program? A local community college here has such a program. He also needs to make sure he is getting all the benefits from the County where he lives (ie medical help, SSI, Social Securiy disability, etc.) A good lawyer can help him get SS disability benefitws.

Regards Nathan.

all i can say is, in my opinion, the only true cure is time. as time goes by, you slowly start accepting what has happened and start being happy again and able to move on.
kerrdog96 4 years ago

Fringe111 4 years ago
yes, some of us get dealt better hands then others. your friend, like myself, got dealt crap, but theres nothing we can do about it, but just play with the hand that we have and move on. i know this is hard to deal with, but what can we do.
kerrdog96 4 years ago
We can't have that attitude anymore. If you noticed the internet is breaking down the barriers that we could never do in the past. We can't sit back anymore and just let things happen to us.

it wasnt the same. i could only handle and do easy tasks. when given a more challanging task, i got very frustrated and upset. after 16 months, i decided i can no longer do it. it was my dream and cause of black on a bend in the road, its taken from me. i am now going back to school and trying to get something else.

I don't know what to tell you other than I wish him well and this is so terribly unfortunate. I believe that at some point it will get better. It is good to hear he is able to still carry on loving and living. ((hugs))

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions really. I just wanted to let you know I was sorry to hear about your son-in-laws condition and hope that he makes the fullest recovery possible. It's really great that he has a supportive boss who he has a good relationship with.

And it's so great that I have amazing friends like you. Thanks Blink

I just responded with one of my old videos. The
information in there may be of help since the techniques of Recovery Inc. also help with anxiety and feelings of disappointment. It teaches one to not punish oneself for "not measuring up."

Oh thank you, I'll look at it now
Fringe111 4 years ago
My thoughts are with you and your family Joy. I wish you the best. Maybe attending group meetings of others with similar injuries would help you to network and find information of what they are going through and what they are doing and what kind of help is out there. Take care my friend. :)

My brain injury was minor compared to his, and I suffer from memory loss and I can't do many things I once could. We just kept looking until we found a Neurologist that would listen and was understanding. He has helped me tremendously. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
(((Hugs))) to you...

CagedSongBird 4 years ago
We are working on it Paula, thanks so much.
As far as you go Paula, fight my friend.
Fringe111 4 years ago

Same school as Donald Trump.
mia0899cs 4 years ago
He would become frustrated. I think a new Cat scan should be performed by a neurosurgeon. I will talk to my friend. I think a teaching hospital would be the first place to start. John Hopkins University, Thomas Jefferson University, and University of Pennsylvania are three of the best in the country.
mia0899cs 4 years ago
I feel he should get out of that career. The brain recompensates differently. So, have you noticed there is something he is better at that he wasn't before? Thank God he has recovered so wonderfully.

Thanks for your e-mail, I got some very good info there. Take care mia

That's OK anakin, I just had to put it out there. But you should see the amount of information I got that I never thought possible. Good information. You Tube can be a marvelous place.
Fringe111 4 years ago
I would definantly suggest having him get reffered to a specialist to get evaluated. I do know someone that had a closed brain injury but effected differently than you son-in-law. My hubby's sister has trouble walking or talking when she is overstimulated by stress or emotion. It has been several years since she had the accident and still has not recovered either.

ok im not being silly here but he could start his own safety company, he would just have to go and talk to companys workers about being safe while driving a motorcycle, he can even make a video and sell it, i just saw one a guy made after he was in a explosins and was burned all over his body and what he had to go throu, kind of like a scare you safe stuff.. lots of money to be made in this..

I'm not sure of what state he's in, but if you look up traumatic brain injury in his state or regionally, you might find something. I used to work for an organization that had TBI programs. I'll send an email with more info.
Mom2AJ 4 years ago
I got your e-mail and printed out the organization. That was great and thank you soooooo much. I'll let you know what happens

Oh Tim that would be great. Any help would be appreciated

You bet it does, thank you

Because of my disease I know that there are therapist's called " cognitive therapy " Now whether or not this is the ave you need I am not sure. But they specialize in the field of teaching people to use what "wires" work and teach new methods for the ones that do not. Maybe you could ask them if they work with closed brain injuries. My guess would be, if they dont, they would know who would. Their called Cognitive therapists. I hope this helps him and your family :)

Yes, it really helps, thanks my friend. I'll call after the weekend

google "closed head brain injury support"- there are some links that might help. to me, it sounds like he might need a therapist to help him deal with limitations he faces now. just some thoughts. peace.
