alright according to both the current manga and anime Light died. The rumor of a deathnote return is anticipated but not confirmed. It probably won't be nearly as 1-26. In my opinion DeathNote should've ended at episode 26, with the defeat of L and the proclamation that the world was heading in a new direction with Kira as law.
The reason DeathNote had such a crappy season 27-37 was because one of the writers was arrested for a possession of a weapon(illegal in japan) after speeding.
We had come to expect so much from these two geniuses. It will be alot better if the expand Death Note beyond 37. The ending was too forced. All of Near's assumptions were based not off actual facts but off audience knowledge. His conclusions were assumed off what we knew. Complete BS suspecting Mikane. Further more, Yagami Light acted completely out of character in ep 37... He never boasted before his opponent died, and furthermore who does a full wing span to write something subtlely.
If nothing else, I think Mello should've won rather than Near. It would've made the most plausible sense; he /did/ do all the work, after all. Near just sat on his ass all day and took everything Mello found out. Furthermore, the anime makes it worse (even though I prefer it) since they cut Mello's footage in half to depict him as just a common thug.
Meh..I don't like Near. -.-;;
On another note, the fic and amv is awesome. In fact, it's probably how the series should've ended. 'Nuff said.

There were a couple points where I was cheering for Light, but those didn't come until after the unspeakable horrors portrayed in chapter 58... Actually, my sudden change of side was mostly due to the fact that I dislike Near and totally like Mikami. (And my fave character wasn't TECHNICALLY on a side, so Matsuda doesn't influence my decision any...)

actually, sharingaantarget, both the anime and the manga (unfortunately) end pretty much the same way. Only in the manga light dies right there in the building, not in the prettty sunlight in some other building.
This amv was well made. Very nice. On another note, *snickers at the poorly made pun* how do you feel about the ending to death note? I don't like it at all, and was fuming when I finished manga 12 (the last one), because I believe, however insane Light really was, he was also a damn genious, and he should not of put so much faith in Mikami to stay out of things. Good job on the amv, though.
I think that Light's death was very ironic. His cocky-ness was his downfall, and if he hadn't been arrogant and wanted to be the god of his new world, he would've won. But the ending where Near took the letter L SEVERELY ticked me off. And how can you kill off Mikami??? (Matsuda's right. Near did it!)
