I love this movie. Would love to have it. Thanks for uploading. Can you upload where she sings "Zing Went the Strings" or is it included in one of the clips without being labeled in the video title? Thanks!
@msvick66 Yes, I vote for one of the many times she sang Zing Went the Strings! I performed it once at a Chinese banquet. Only now do I notice she sounds too much like Annie. That show ruins a lot of child singers.
THANK YOU so much of uploading this video. I LOVE this song especially the way Andrea sings it. I wish there was a soundtrack of this movie. This is so going into my favorites. THANK GOODNESS FOR YOU TUBE!!!!
@LifeintheformofSean Studios didn't name her. Georgie Jessel suggested the name "Garland" when they started working for him in vaudeville, and Judy picked out her own new first name. That was before she got into films.
Now that the Lost Tracks are out as of August 10, and we'll all get a chance to hear Judy's Dinah from 1935 when she was 12 on the Decca demo tests, (I heard a sneak preview) the two versions can now be compared - Judy actually singing the same song from the same year this would be. Andrea has a well trained and great voice, but Judy BLOWS it out of the water for "Dinah"! WOW! Judy could "scat" before MGM taught her anything, something Andrea couldn't do.
Bruised artichoke? Jesus...whatever. I was 7 when this came out-I guess I missed it. Her voice is Unique. She sings and you hear 3 notes and you know it's her. THAT is the success not wether everyone likes it. So she won and your retarded ears lost! From what I have seen she is amazing!!! With a nick like vengeance I not suprised you are a tool/and or needs a shrink....LOL

Sorry, but this sucked, and while Judy was not classically "beautiful," she didn't have a face like a bruised artichoke (McArdle!). Man, what a homely child! Judy was pretty. Plus, McArdle's voice is one of the most grating, mechanical things imaginable. I could not have thought of someone less appropriate to play Judy Garland, Ever. Even in the world of craptastic 1970s TV. Major suckage.
@Vengeance509 **giggles** I'm sorry; I know there are fans of this movie; and I was definitely one of them when I was a kid - so I don't mean any offense at all to McArdle fans, but I must confess your comparisons made me chuckle ("craptastic")
I remember this TV special as a kid. It was right after Andrea's success in "Annie". I think she is fabulous in the made for TV movie. She is not Judy Garland, but did a fabulous job portraying her. Being a Philadelphian, we are proud of her and all of her acccomplishments. I have seen her many performances and she raely disapoints. She has grown into an amazing entertainer and on top of that, she is always gracious and down to earth which makes her unique and is what she is all about...
I live for Andrea. She sounds so amazing on all of these songs, I don't even care that she sounds nothing like Judy. I have the official VHS of this and I had to pay $50 for it about 10 years ago...why couldn't Youtube have been around then...sigh.
THANK YOU so much for uploading parts of 'Rainbow'! I only saw it on the original broadcast, but had tape recorded it (before vcr) so I know the tunes and dialogue. WOW!
she got the part because she has an amazing voice was the same as when judy started out. she was an incredable actress. and the only kid who could pull it off she was amzing
I never understood where people go tthe impression this actress hand any similarity what so ever with Judy. Like all Garland Bios, it really doesnt fly. Why use another singers voice but Garland? The point is to show the magic of Garland, not showcase a new voice..
Did you ever notice when they do "oeriod pieces" they always use that typical back ground clarinet music? For some reason it doesnt help the setting of the film or TV. If you notice back then they didnt have this background music in the films of the time.
I had the tremendous honor of meeting Andrea McArdle briefly last year. She is warm, kind, gracious, and down to earth. Her talent soars, and she is really so beautiful and graceful in her mid-40s... a living legend and true broadway diva.
I love Andrea McArdle, but I agree that she was nothing like Judy. The timbre to her voice couldn't be more different. But I do love Andrea nonetheless. She seems like so much fun.
I'm actually kind of surprised that she didn't sue him for libel or something; one thing I distinctly remember him saying at the read through is that she didn't read well at all. That's kind of a cr*ppy thing to say about a kid....not like it's a character flaw or something.
I wouldn't put much stock in anything Jackie Cooper had to say. He was kind of a mess himself, was very much abused by the system as a child and it obviously spilled over into his adult mindset and his attitude toward other child actors. He probably was offended if McArdle wouldn't work 24 hours a day without sleep. The guy was nuts.
This actress isn't even remotely convincing as Judy. I realize that it is next to impossible to find someone with the right spark and charisma to portray her, especially as a child, but... this is terrible! Looks like an interesting enough movie otherwise.
I agree she's nothing like Judy - way to much spunk and energy and none of the "sparrow in the wind" quality but I love her anyway - she's got her own brand of charisma.
I remember watching this over and over and over on Cinemax or some cable channel one summer when I was a kid. It was on at least once a week and I was there every time!
I read the book several years ago so I don't remember it all. You may be able to find his bio at the library. It was written very soon after this film was made. To be blunt, he said she was the most unpleasant child he ever had the misfortune to work with. That she was very spoiled and held up rehearsals and production by sulking and pouting if she didn't get her way. Her mother was unable to control her, etc. And that she could not read well at all at the script read throughs.
wow thats weird, everything i have seen of Andrea in any interview and such she seems like such a nice person. but most of what i have seen was her as an adult, i wasn;t born when this was made so i didnt see much of her as a teenager. but you never know, it might have been a phase or something.
I agree. His bio is very strange, but you have to wonder why he'd lie about a minor if it wasn't true. It's kind of odd that it's in there even if it is true. It was her first "movie" - maybe their personalities just clashed or something.
Yes, I tend to agree very much. I know a big hoop-la was made over Andrea as Annie, but I find her screen acting flat and dull. However, when I was 14, this movie was being shown in reruns on TV and it introduced me to Judy Garland...and for that much I am grateful. :)
I caught the end of it years ago on Bravo! like 10 years ago haven't seen all of it since...I would love to see this movie...it should be on DVD.

Little Smartass. I'll bet Andrea was a hoot at this age, especially with that cool singing voice.
