"Atheists can be just as kind, moral, and generous as anybody else"...on Christmas.
Way to fail. Can't wait for the day that atheists gather like missionaries and do something for impoverished countries...oh wait, it won't happen; they'll leave it for the Christians.
@mgk786 Atheists have a lot to worry about. Like getting the same civil rights as christians. When that happens, maybe then we will have enough time to help out the world which we allegedly never do.
@mgk786 "that atheists gather like missionaries and do something for impoverished countries" There are lots of secular, non religious charities. they don't propstelartise. Chez , spent a day tending lepers, but the missionaries wouldn't give him supper, because he missed mass. Missions indoctrinate, the impoverished.
"Logical" arguments as to why god "should" exist are meaningless. Let it show itself or do something mildly impressive like moving the Pyramids from Egypt to Manchester. Then there'd be something worth talking about.
@USABG58 I've noticed Christians always project. The entire torturous Hell fabricated by their decree is nothing but a disturbing psychological issue that projects their inner thoughts, e.g. inflecting torture, onto others in a subconscious level.
But fear not; we have cure for your disease, and it doesn't begin with a mindless praying but rather by actually starting to think.
@ninuxy OK. I'm with you on the "Hell" point. I don't believe in an acutal place called Hell. Never have. Christians and athiests and everyone project all the time. Human nature. I don't have a disease, I'm a rational, thinking person with above average I.Q. wondering if with an infinite number of Big Bang cycles, a God can exist. You puny humans can never absolutely prove there isn't. "Best guess" is the best you can manage. Cool. Now take a chill pill 'cause I'm not pushing my ideas.
@USABG58 The question is not that there is or there is not a God or Gods. The point is to stop pretending to know who he is or what he wants. In all probability, if there is a god, he wants you not to acknowledge him in the first place.
The more pertinent question one must ask, if there is a god, why would he want to go through all these trouble to create a universe in the first place. Then by asking this question, you realize your mind is bound by its own natural limitation.
@ninuxy Ha! Look who's projecting. A Beat Generation God who wants 'you not to acknowledge him in the first place', who thinks saying hello and goodbye are passe. Speaking of passe: most physicists believe in mulitverses, not a "universe", as you put it. Probably an infinite number over an infinite amount of time, so God didn't go through all the trouble to create the universe, it's a perpetual cycle. You're bound by your limitation and decree there's no God. Be an agnostic and unknowing.
@USABG58 Your incoherent discursive rambling is a sign of a sanctimonious man who pretends to know something. Since when the multiverse theory has become universally accepted theory by a very large number of scientists? Oh, but don't let that little fact stop you from acting like you know what you prattling about.
So God created a perpetual cycle of universes begetting new universes without an origin!!! You still have to define your God.
@ninuxy Gee whiz, let try not to "ramble": 1) "he wants you not to acknowledge him in the first place"-- my point was this is behavior a Beatnik would practice, not God who's involved in humanity, -duh-. 2) Prof. Hawking supports multiverse theory, -duh- Yeah, some "prattling" sure did go on here! 3) No humans are able to define God since His being remains a mystery. 4) and I'm the antithesis of an ignostic, since I obviously don't require a difinition of God to talk about him, -duh- Go away
@USABG58 Put together a coherent sentence before hitting that Post button. Our lack of engaging a supreme being into our lives is neither a behavior nor a practice. The point is to seek the truth, and in order to make the journey, you cannot proclaim you already reached the destination.
In the absence of truth, one seeks the faith; in the absence of the faith, one seeks the truth. A god who incessantly demands you to acknowledge him is a narcissistic god who's antithesis of his defined virtues.
Are there as many naturally beautiful, intelligent and well-spoken women in London as there are surgically enhanced, superficial and vapid women here in Southern California? I'm getting on the next fucking plane to England...

Some say the total energy must be 0 as E=mc2 therefore mc2/infinity = 0. Wrong, because that only gives average distribution of energy over the volume of the Universe. If we accept the equation E=mc^2 then E is not 0. There's also the belief of the Electric Universe. In reality, theorists try to fit the results to suit their equations. This is probably why theoretical physicists/astronomers piss off observational astronomers.
Oh dear. You seem to have an awfully warped view of science. "Just theories" is painful to hear. Understand the nature of slippage before saying something like that.

"Both sides"? Rubbish. There's one side, and that's the side of science.
You also do not seem to understand what a theory really is, but that's extremely common. A theory describes and explains observed facts, evidence. You seem to think that a theory is just a random guess grabbed from thin air, and that is wrong. That's what creationists do.
Only through evidence-based science can we gain a greater understanding about the universe, and that should be obvious to everyone.
Your comment still doesn't prove how it all started. "Only through evidence-based science can we gain a greater understanding about the universe, and that should be obvious to everyone." Of course, but why is it that Atheists believe in something that hasn't been proven? You're no different than the people who believe in the bible. Both sides try to persuade you into thinking that they're the right path even though neither side has been able to prove anything. Challenge my comments below, please
No different? Science is based on tangible, empirical, observable evidence. You're free to go reproduce any experiments yourself and come to your own conclusions. This is a big difference to a faith-based system where you're only operating on superstition and incorporeal matters.
"How it all started" is also a little vague. We have models and evidence for how the universe came to be, and how most things thereafter formed. Before that is impossible to determine since time did not exist.
The conundrum of existence will always be a puzzle; one we may never find an answer to. However, this does not mean we should resort to religion to prove it. Logically it does not follow. If we can infer things from empirical evidence, why claim that our existence is caused by something completely unprecedented as a supernatural being?
Besides, it merely replaces one question with another. You can say we exist because of god, but why does god exist?
After all, anything that applies to him, could just as easily apply to the universe. The one which we are familiar with and form our basis of reality. Why jump to fantastical beings?
Once more, I love science. I think I know more than the average person when it comes to science even though i'm majoring in administration of justice. I also enjoy watching Phil Plait. Your other comment was removed by Phil. You went too far, i guess LMAO. I win :D lol jk. You're still avoiding my questions even when I provided other videos for you to look at, and I'm tired of typing to someone who keeps repeating. GL :P
"Until then, I'll be in the middle avoiding both sides." You sound as if you're almost proud to be an intellectual coward, keeping silent until you're sure you're following sheeplike what everyone else thinks.
"I'm and ex-believer." And my favorite: "I believe the human race faces extinction unless we colonise space, which we could achieve using near-Earth asteroid resources, turning potential hazards into habitats." Riiiight...LOL. Sure buddy, keep going. Oh, I'm not keeping silent and I'm not following anyone, FYI.
There's nothing ridiculous about the possibility we could become extinct, global warming, nuclear or biological warfare, an asteroid or comet strike could wipe us all out forever, as we have all our eggs in one basket. The idea we can create an insurance policy by colonising other worlds and space habitats is one supported by Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal and Prof. Stephen Hawking. All we need is two self-sustaining colonies with a million people each and our survival potential is increased.
I like the idea of colonizing other worlds (who wouldn't?), but the only plausible possibility of human extinction out of your list would be nuclear or biological warfare. Global warming? Please. Comet/asteroid strike? Not gonna happen in our lifetime or the next.x10. And even then we probably have the technology to move or destroy it. Maybe you should read Phil Plait's Death From the Skies.
"Maybe you should read Phil Plait's Death From the Skies." Maybe you should. Asteroid/comet strikes are a real danger, we already get hit by meteorites, most fall in the sea, but sometime one will hit a population centre. The Tunguska event was likely a comet and if it hit a city it would have killed millions. You're a global warming denier? Figures. Guess you're a self-proclaimed prophet as well, Nostradamus 4.0?
Good lord...I have read the book. I never said asteroids/comets can;t hit Earth. As you said, strikes happen all the time (Big and small). But you were talking about extinction. Clearly, these meteorites aren't big enough to eliminate the human race like you think. I agree, the Tunguska event would've been a disaster if the comet had targeted a city. But...even if it did, would it have caused human extinction? No.
It's been a while since I read Phil's book, but i think he said it's a one in a million chance or something like that. I might be wrong. Like i said, it's not going to happen in our lifetime or the next x10. Look at videos or read Phil's darn book and inform yourself. No reason for you to be paranoid. Also, many meteorologists believe global warming to be a myth. Try the Meteorological Society. Okay, so we've warmed 1 degree in the last century? Don't tell me you believed Al Gore.
The meteorologists that deny global warming are charlatans. The evidence for it is overwhelming and indisputable at this point in time. This argument would have been fitting maybe a decade or two ago.
Also, he said that human extinction is possible if we don't colonize other planets. You say this won't happen in our lifetime. Can you explain the relevance of your statement? If it does not happen in our lifetime it'll happen in the future, at which point humanity is extinct.
I think you just need to relax. We're not going to the next dimension anytime soon. (that's a partial quote taken from Vegeta, a Dragonball Z character, when he destroys a world and eliminates a race. " See you in the next dimension!" lol
This is the kind of idea i wholeheartedly agree to. And a lot more responsible than simply trying to appease an ancient desert-god into not flooding you till you drown or burning you to a crisp for all eternity.
oh, and to all you who commented before, well, atheists are sexier :D
The evidence presented is substantial. I might have a bias though because I'm a heterosexual male. We need confirmation from a more objective observer (female heterosexual or male homosexual).
The experiment is flawed by sample bias, I think. There are no ugly people in the vid, so sexiness is not the dependent variable here. Phil needs to reshoot this standing in a crowd of diverse people.
Speech in California evolved into what is considered accent free speech. This is why t.v. news anchors in all parts of the u.s. sound exactly the same.
hottest ever? i'll have to research that. in the interest of science. it'll be tough to prove- especoially with that accent. maybe i can get a grant...

Figures. Guess you're a self-proclaimed prophet as well, Nostradamus 4.0?
alien8ted 2 years ago
Good lord...I have read the book. I never said asteroids/comets can;t hit Earth. As you said, strikes happen all the time (Big and small). But you were talking about extinction. Clearly, these meteorites aren't big enough to eliminate the human race like you think. I agree, the Tunguska event would've been a disaster if the comet had targeted a city. But...even if it did, would it have caused human extinction? No.
Valtheos 2 years ago
It's been a while since I read Phil's book, but i think he said it's a one in a million chance or something like that. I might be wrong. Like i said, it's not going to happen in our lifetime or the next x10. Look at videos or read Phil's darn book and inform yourself. No reason for you to be paranoid. Also, many meteorologists believe global warming to be a myth. Try the Meteorological Society. Okay, so we've warmed 1 degree in the last century? Don't tell me you believed Al Gore.
Valtheos 2 years ago

She's very sexy. View video for empirical evidence to substantiate my claim.

The evidence presented is substantial. I might have a bias though because I'm a heterosexual male. We need confirmation from a more objective observer (female heterosexual or male homosexual).
omegavalerius 2 years ago 5
The experiment is flawed by sample bias, I think. There are no ugly people in the vid, so sexiness is not the dependent variable here. Phil needs to reshoot this standing in a crowd of diverse people.

Typical atheists, wanting to eat babies for christmas... why don't you just metaphorically eat jesus's flesh and blood like the rest of us...
TheReasonWhyGuy 2 years ago 3
Not for us catholics! We actually literally believe we are eating human flesh.
