@tinnedanger I used the standard exhaust supplied by Factory Five and Hooker long tube headers. I had a filter over the mike to eliminate wind noise and it makes the car appear quieter. Sorry to burst your bubble.
@otis84031 YEP ! At the time my Cobra was measuring 115 dB at idle....If I was standing beside you and shouting you would have found it hard to hear me. I have experimented and built an exhaust (still in sidepipes) that now measures 93 dB at idle. It's still loud but MUCH quieter than before.
Awesome car and was lucky enough to drive my friends before he sold it, since that day it has been my top dream car :P as for the 427 engine i believe it was not shelby's idea as ford had promised him there Ford aluminium block the 390, but ford changed there mind so he had to do his best with the heavier 427 engine, and what a great job he did. But the only ever problem I have ever had with this car was the fact that this car was the reason there are national speed limits on the uk's motorways
@daver32gtr don't know where you got your info, but the 427 is a larger displacement version of the 390 (which was cast-iron... aluminum motors were EXTREMELY rare in 1963) , they're both FE engines... and ford originally gave him 260's to put in his new car, then 289's, then Shelby installed a 390 as an experiment... eventually he began producing them in race trim with 427's, but few 427 Cobras actually had them... most had the much more affordable 428, which was another engine entirely.
@t45tube The AC car was built in england, but Carrol Shelby took the car and put his big Ford 427 Racing Side Oiler's in them. he raced them at Le Mans which is what they became famous for. The AC car? yes England.

@tw3steds3lf actually the rolling chassis were imported from England until the car's discontinuation in 1967... all Shelby did was install the drivetrain and finish the cars at his shop in California and then move them.
I can remember reading a road test in a 1965 issue of Motor Trend on the 427 AC Shelby Cobra and what I remember most, 46 years after reading it, was their comment about being able to break the rear wheels loose @ more than 100 miles per hour in a 4th gear power shift. Now that is really really really impressive, eh?
johnnyo032003 ~ First off, gawd only knows what somebody would want for a tight 427 SOHC motor. I mean, really, you could probably buy a 3 bedroom house for less money. I lived at SoCal dragstrips from late '63 until drafted (Vietnam) in 1969. There was a time when the 427 SOHC Ford was bad bad shit, on gas or fuel. Kaletta won Top Fuel at the '67 Winternationals with an SOHC Ford top fueler. The 427 high rise in this freakin' little body is waaaay more than enough.
would love to build a cobra like this and instead of a crate big block, put in the SHO v6 or the new mustang v6 with some mods, give it a little higher pitch, so some ricer kid can laugh at me for not having a 427, then I can show him that that dont mean nothing if you use the right engine. upgraded turbos on a SHO motor would easily be close to or better than a stock 427, although its cheaper to build a 427... I think the gas mileage would be much better though...
@Sergeeize this is a factory five kit car. they give you parts except motor and tranny. all in all to build one youll need 35,000 to get all the parts and then your own time to build it.

@ieast007 Thats right, but you have to remember that they only dominated it for a very short while because the internals of the engines were made of chocolate, especially ford engines that start melting and burning oil, plus the geometry of these cars were set up wrong, giving ferrari a chance to take the lead again and this time forever, they do look not too bad bur you have to remember that it is a british design car, if it just had better internals it would have been an icon and classic

Wonderful, my dad used to have a kit just like this but due to financial probs it had to go.. oh man.. as a kid I had such a big grin being in this car.. the sound, the acceleration.. and the bet.. the bet of taking money from the screen when he accelerated.. yup I lost! damn you dad! :) love this car..
