  • Also...the fat32 partition I was trying to recover was on a external USB enclosure.

  • This is a great tutorial but I still was not able to recover the partition just shows no partitions available. I believe the partition table got screwed after a power fail while writing was happening. Have you used Scalpel/Forensics if you have can you please put a tutorial together, thanks in advance. BTW, your tutorials are awesome!

  • I almost never comment on videos, but I have to for this one:

Thank you so much! Was seconds away from reinstalling OSX when I came across your video, the instructions are almost identical for Mac, and I now have all the files I was sure I had lost.

  • TestDisk saved me!!Me and my data. Having an HP pavilion g6 and trying to make a dual boot after some experiments all the partitions deleted! Running TestDisk form a usb boot and following the instructions, managed to recover data and able to boot in windows 7. I just "write" the [SYSTEM] partition that TestDisk found at the "quick search"!!! GREAT PROGRAM !!!!!

  • Hi, very good video. I'm using Linux Mint and I deleted accidently the unique hard disk partition. Next time I turned on the cumputer I had no access to the O.S. (underline blinking at the corner of the screen) so I boot from a Linux Live CD installation and follow this instructions. After that I rebooted it and still no O.S. found in hard drive so here I am in the Live CD again. The partition e showed as ntfs in g-parted (should it be ext?) but still can't find my stuff.

  • I accidentally deleted a software raid partition mde in Windows 7. Can I recover it?

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH, DID EVERYTHING YOU SAID AND IT WORKED. I GOT BACK EVERYTHING. AGAIN THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

  • Thank you so much. Nice video.

  • thumbs up if your computer just committed suicide

  • @marcusthedog WOW! It has been 5 months since I responded to your comment. I still need to create a Live CD for TestDisk as it will still provide a great solution for what I need to do. At the same time I will also promote your video through my Google+ network. I'm sure that the "techies" will enjoy the information.

  • sudo apt-get install testdisk

  • INSTAL -

  • Question please, I deleted by mistake my External HardDisk WD. I tried to recover it but no hope!

When I used TestDisk the HDD appears in the Drives list.

So, now how can I get to it?

I cannot find it in the Computer icon. I guess it says "un-allocated"

What should I do? Can you help please?

    Thanks

  • @amzertech - here's what happened I have a computer with dual boot Ubuntu and Windows, I decided to delete Ubuntu coz it's for my gf and she doesn't know how to use it. When I deleted the partition in Computer Management, it also deleted the Storage files of my Windows partition.

My face got cold blue, and my mind started to fade out. Glad I searched in Google recover deleted windows partition ubuntu then I saw your video.

I will watch all your videos on the weekend. Thank you sir! Subscribed!

  • Wow, looks really good! I'm running windowsXP and Ubuntu on differant drives, and my windows one seems to be corrupted. I tried doing exactly what you did in the video, but I still can't boot windows...or even see any of my data. Any ideas why?

  • This is an *excellent* video. I may create a Live CD for TestDisk as a Plan B for a PC that may not startup.

  • What a fantastic free resource! Thank you very much for this video, I accidentally formatted my external hard drive whilst installing xp for a friend and this recovered all my files and fixed the boot sector.

My hat comes off to Christopher Grenier for building this software and you for a look at how to use it, thank you.

    Thanks!

  • hi got a question, great vid btw. I partitioned my hard drive in 2 parts. I realized that I accidently made the 2nd partition too big so i changed it back to 1 partition and at that point i lost all my data. Will this work? I'm trying it now and its not working so just wondering if i should keep at it.

  • One question I installed ubuntu 10.10 and did not partition for windows and used all of the memory will this help me get back my windows partition ......please help And thanks

  • Thanks for the vid; greatly appreciated! I accidentally formated one of my FAT32 partitions on my external harddrive on my PowerMac G5, I tried booting into Ubuntu and Kubuntu with a live CD, like I always do when things go awry, (for GParted and Partition Editor) but they both didn't boot :( Now, I'm scanning my 1TB HDD for that partition, thanks again. BTW, what screencasting program do you use?

  • NOW THAT'S AMAZING!!!

I lost a partition yesterday trying to install Mac OS. That installation program deleted and ERASED (formatted? not sure) a partition that I didn't want it to kill. I tried loads of programs and programs, under ubuntu, windows, even bootable CDs with partition utilities........ to no success...

HOWEVER, thank to your guide.... I recovered ALL DATA from the partition, which contained personal stuff such as photographs that I had taken for the las 10 years!!

    THANK YOU!!!

  • @mahterson You got lucky! Have you got yourself an external hdd now to minimize the risk of losing a backup?

  • Hello, my computer runs windows 7 and linux. I had 4 partitions in total. 1 for windows and the other 3 for linux. I completely messed up and deleted 3 partitions on my hard disk. I cannot start my computer, but I can boot from a live linux CD. I want to perform this procedure on my computer to recover the deleted partitions but, wanted to know if I could do this on the 3 partitions I deleted and how to do it.

    Thanks!

  • Hi! Great video! Did everything you said, but I have a problem: after I rebooted, I get the message: "grub rescue". What should I do next?

  • @admirim you should try reinstalling GRUB. you can find the instruction by searching google

I Also liked the relaxing effect of the music. ;)

  • Thanks dude. You saved my ass. While installing windows 7, the installer wiped out my backup partition with a lot of files. I used the usb ubuntu live and worked perfectly. Thanks again.

  • Hi!

Great video, just what I needed!

So here's what I did: I accidentally restored a mac .dmg over a NTFS partition which was my backup disk. I'm using Testdisk right now (on Ubuntu), it does recognize my external disk but don't know what to choose when it asks for the partition table type... Is it the actual table type (Mac) or the table type I accidentally overwrote (NTFS)?

I've read that there's a good chance to recover at least some of my files...

Help me please! Thanks a lot,

  • can you help me to recover the partition recovery

pc? my email is seb90@live.it please contact me i'm desperate

  • can you help me to recover the partition recovery

pc? my email is seb90@live.it i'm desperate

  • In command line: USER sudo su (su) ROOT apt-get install testdisk (su) ROOT testdisk (su (testdisk)) No log Hard drive to recover data from Analyse Quick Search Select deleted partition Copy folders one by one to a different partition Remake the partition, and rebuild your file system Leave testdisk, exit the root terminal, and exit the user terminal.
  • Thanks a million man. I can't believe how easy this was, your video is fantastic.

  • Clear and helpful video. And nice music too! thanks!

  • will this work if data is lost through system restore?

  • Does it work with a corrupted external HDD?

  • Thanks so much for the video, this is all very foreign to me. I tried to delete the partition off my hard drive to install windows xp to dual boot: It switched my C: drive to my external hard drive. So I ended up deleting the partition of my external hard drive, now I can not access the drive at all!

If Testdisk doesn't fix the problem, I'm out of luck, right? If I can not recover the partition, do I create a new one and then I'll at least be able to start over?

    Thanks

  • @SpaceRitual Disregard my post, the problem WAS fixed after a deeper search and a little research independent of your excellent video. THANK YOU once again!

  • what if i deleted all my data from my hdd accidentally from were you first partion and format the hdd at the beginning would i still be able to recover my data by using this application? , and also would i able to burn it to a disk and boot from it?.....thanks

  • I loaned a WD 1TB My Book to a friend and it came back w/o being able to access the files - over 350GB of music and 200GB of photos! The error stated that "the disk was not formatted do you want to format now?" I chose "No" and used TestDisk (on Win XP) to try to find the partition. It found the right one in a backup sector (the primary sector was bad) and rewrote it. Works great now, all files are accessible. Thanks! You might want to tell people where to download TestDisk.

  • I had an external hdd 500gb with two partions - one a mac time machine back up (HFS+) the other FAT32. on ubuntu i hit the format button with the wrong hdd seleted and it deleted both partions and created one fat32 partion. should Testdisk be able to get back my partions or at least my FAT32 partion?

  • does this work on windows 7?

  • @XohshitztonysbackX I never tried it myself on Windows but I believe it does.

  • @XohshitztonysbackX yes, it does! i recovered a partition in windows 7 (it was created in windows xp)

  • @XohshitztonysbackX

Yes it does..I'm actually trying it now and so far so good =)

  • Thanks !! you save my live !

  • @tq77 Yes, if there are still errors that way it uncovers more informationthat way, if all is ok no need to :)

  • @fukctubeyoupricks ÷ I managed to recover 10 GB worth of file mostly documents but am facing two problems.

    1. I can't open doc files on openoffice. 2. Can't search for the file name since it's renamed to such f29874732857.

  • does this really work because alot of videos I've seen people claim that it really works but when I've tried it it doesn't work....

I need to know this really works because I called Gateway to get the restore discs and they said they don't make restore disc anymore for my model. Which is stupid because it was made 4 years ago.

  • thank you very much!!!!!

  • i wish this would have worked for me... i deleted 465 Gb movies, music etc... right now im trying Active undelete enterprise edition and I hope it works...

  • - OMG Thank you sooo much!! You saved me from a $500 dollar data recovery service locally!! That was just the estimate too, it could have been more!!

I thought I had tried everything!! Including "SpinRite" which didnt help.

    Again, thank you soo much!!

  • hey friend m getting this message and im unable to recover my partitions can any one plz help me out??

    Disk /dev/sda - 160 GB / 149 GiB - CHS 19458 255 63

    The harddisk (160 GB / 149 GiB) seems too small! (< 174 GB / 162 GiB)

Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection...

The following partition can't be recovered:

  • You can't restore the partition to a smaller drive.

  • @amzertech so what is the solution, why its giving this message??

  • Can I restore the partition to external hard drive? because I have 1tb and internal hard drive I have 350 but the partition file size is 400gb

    BTW nice guitar

  • hi i have a problem @ 4:26 this screen doesn't

appear yust the screen @ 4:34 and i cant quicksearch i deleted the partition of my desktop hard drive by accident help please :(

    oh and 5 stars

  • Thanks for the video. I have an XP HD which cannot be seen in XP, but in TestDisk it is there as are the files.. If I hit Write will is there any chnace that it will delete my files... 496GB of them? I have subscribed so will get around to looking at them all. Good job!!

  • I never had TestDisk delete anything but there's always a chance that things can go wrong like with anything else with computers. I recommend that you boot a live cd of ubuntu on that machine and see if you can access your files that way first.

  • OMG OMG OMG YOU ARE AWESOME!. While installing Ubuntu Linux I accidently deleted the entire partition and os (Vista) Going to try it and see if I Can bring back vista ! 5/5 Commented . Rated. Subscribed! Wish Me Luck!

  • Thanks alot man works! for windows!

  • amzertech You really are a true hero, i've spent ALL DAY trying to fix this thing, and you came and saved me 200$ ! GOD BLESS YOU !!!!

  • Great!! Thanks! :)

  • Amzertech,

You are our hero for 2009! What a nightmare-ish 24 hours it has been trying to figure out how to recover our data from a stubborn Dell laptop with a deleted partition (with the OS on it!)

Tried almost everything in vain before stumbling across your excellent video! In our state of anxiety, your BGM really was a welcome tranquilizer! lol!

ALL our data -- still intact! -- is now safely being transferred to an external drive at this very moment and should be done tomorrow morning!!

  • It's always great to hear that my videos are helping people! Thank you! :)

  • I need to restore all my files on a partition which is unknown.. wat should i do?? can you help me plss!!^^ tnx

  • I made another screencast about restoring or recovering deleted files. Just go to my channel and search for "how to recover deleted files" and you should find it. If you found my videos helpful subscribe :)

  • hey I really love your theme, what is it called/ how can I get it??Thanks!

  • Hi Amzertech,

test disk does not find all my partition with quick search

I do a deepsearch and find them and I can list files but it say bad structure

but how do I write to disk after deepsearch ?

I don't see the option write

  • So this should work with an external harddrive as well when it has been reformatted right?

  • yes, it should.

  • It seems to only work with XP Pro, since the option isn't available with XP Home :(

  • did you try using the windows version of Testdisk? If you did and that didn't work you can always try using the linux version from a live CD

  • whoa sorry, this was supposed to be in your remote desktop video

  • Oh I see. That makes sense now lol

yeah u need windows xp pro :(

  • I wish I had known about this about a month back when i accidentally removed a whole partition with EVERYTHING.

    Thank you lots!

  • Too bad! I hate it when I find the answer right after it's too late but on a positive note now you know how to deal with that situation in the future.

  • no problem ;)

  • Good Stuff! Linked it! Whoot!

  • Cool! Thank you! :)

  • Sweet, thanks for sharing!
