I recently (a week ago~) started to draw digitally and really searched for such a tutorial, that shows the functions of photoshop and is not like "how do I draw a cat" or so. And it really helped me a lot, thank you! <3
@mariegoslar I'm just using a $30 Logitech headset. The mic is surprisingly good on it. Search Amazon.com for "Logitech headset" and it's the first result.
i saw other videos in youtube, those that are drawing anime, they first likely put some gray area all over them, well i don't really know what that's for,..
is your coloring style any different from them? i can't get it cuz it's speed paint, and those guys don't reply to your comments and questions
I think i missed one detail, how are you making sure your 10% flow brush isn't going to affect other layers? is there some sort of lock that makes 'white space' on each layer immune to being colored over at a certain history point?
@dragames Yes, there's info in the description as well as a popup bubble during the beginning of the video. I forgot to actually record that part, but you need to have lock transparency on. With it turned on, whatever pixels on a layer that have no color data will become locked, and you cannot paint on them until it's turned off.
well i guess i need to use colors instead of the dodge and burn tool. cause when i use the those i tend to want to rush so thanx alot ill email ya to show you the difference or matter of fact video response it.
I've actually made a vid about the dodge and burn tool with a good bit of info about it, explaining what they're intended to be used for, if you're interested. :)
@maglot saw the dodge and burn vid guess proves that it doesnt really matter what the propuse is only to brighten and darken things though some colors are bad to use this on like light red and skin tones.
@maglot i vid idea that may help alot people out when they first get photoshop cs2 or any of the cs' its how to ink in lines with the ink tool or by hand. this makes a great vid to understand how to color the in the lines more and figure out how to make baselines of any creature they want. so just an idea. but dodge and burn vid helps to inderstand how u can use it when ever u want for any purpore.
@VaxisD Yeah I had wanted to do an inking / line tutorial in the future. I don't use Photoshop for that though. I ink using a light box and tracing paper, then scan that in and convert the lines to vector art using Adobe Illustrator CS2. They come out smoother and cleaner that way. I don't ever use the pen tool, it sucks.
@maglot What is it that you don't like about the pen tool? It works great for creating areas you need to fill with color in the comics that use a lot of large areas of ink for shading, such as cross-hatched inks, stringy hair inkings, etc... The methods used in this video would seem to work fine for an ink that's only black and white, but some of the drawings I'm coloring (not my own work; I can't draw that well) have a lot of greys which work nicely for shading, but don't like the magic wand.
No. The dodge and burn tool are made to simulate methods of more or less exposure on a photograph (like developing them in a dark room). Therefore, the base color only darkens to black and lightens to white. It's better to pick your colors so that you get a range of tones.
The brush tool? Press 'B' on the keyboard. The icon in the tool dock to the left of the screen is of a paintbrush. You can hold the mouse cursor over the icons for a second and a tooltip will pop up and tell you what it is.
When I was going to shade my picture on the blue layer I was drawing on the backround and the other colours too !! .. I selected the blue layer, but I am still painting on the whole picture .. Howa do I do to only pint on the blue layer ?? Please reply ! =)
Sounds like the problem the guy had bellow this comment. You may have forgotten to turn that layer's "Lock Transparency" button on. You have to do it for every separate layer. It's the little checkered icon at the top of the "Layers" pallette next to the word "Lock:"
Wow, after watching the video, it looks like I totally forgot to mention that part! Oh man, epic failure on my part. I apologize to everyone, that was a pretty important part! I added an annotation to the video to show where it is on the screen. Hope that helps!
Make sure that the layer transparency is locked. With the layer you want to color on highlighted, click the little checkered square icon next to the word "Lock:" Let me know if that works.
I am using a pen tablet for the video. To be more precise, it's Wacom "Bamboo" series tablet. They're a lot easier to use than a mouse, since almost everybody learns to draw or paint using a pencil-like object anyway. I painted using the mouse when I first started off and it was alright but I'd highly recommend getting a tablet if you're serious about your art.
Any time you do anything on a layer, it doesn't affect the other layers. If you want to edit just one color, you'll have to put each color on a separate layer, instead of putting all the colors on one layer.

Why is it that when I start to shade the color fills the background, too? I'm sure that I followed all the steps.

Hi, I'm still quite new to this and it might sound like a dumb question, but are you using a mouse or pen/tablet to shade in this video?
