Terrible irony: The giant happy smiling face on the big sunny sign in the near distance ("Kojima"), while below it, frigid water is destroying everything.
When you realize how quickly those waves hit and how fast, its not surprising the death toll has been so high. In most footage when you see vehicles moving the waves are traveling much faster than they are, so 15 minutes warning w/audible sirens just seconds before?
I live in a dense urban area and it takes 15-20 just to get downtown from where I live. Can you imagine trying to drive CLEAR across town-people fleeing all around being chased by a wave that can move 3 times your speed or faster??
@tulipchic34: According to what I heard on the BBC, the MAXIMUM warning they had was about 20 min, with some places getting the first "wave" slightly earlier, some slightly later. However, Japanese friends of mine have told me in the past that they are taught from a young age that if there is ANY earthquake and they are near the sea/harbours that the should get to high ground immediately so a lot of people would have begun running towards high ground as soon as they could.
@tulipchic34 The earthquake epicenter was so close they only had 11-15 minutes to evacuate and the sirens didnt go off until the tsunami already arrived :(
Westerners generally don't understand the fact that Japanese people express surprise/shock by saying "EHHHHHHH" in a rising voice... it doesn't mean they're singing or are "happy" - it's like someone from the US saying "HOLY ****" (insert expletive of choice). It's a cultural difference.
I do - and my heart goes out to them. I just got sick of seeing so many comments from westerners who asked if the people were "singing" or why they seemed "happy", and I realized that they just didn't understand - that is how these people were dealing with this horrible event. I feel so horrible for these people, but am proud of their resilience since the disaster and look forward to visiting the area in a couple years to see how it's coming along.
