I know the UK gallon is slightly larger than yours in the US at 4.5Litres but the cost of your gas is ever so cheap compared to what it costs in Europe.
I personnaly like my 1972 oldsmobile cutlass it may only get 8 mpg but who cares it goes fast and sounds great, who cares about all this new energy efficient cars why don't we all just go back to the 60s and early 70s cars? And I'm pretty sure an old car makes a better statement about what their driving than that new slow car.

The smart car is a pointless car that doesn't sell for a very good reason it only gets 33 mpg city has very little power and what power it has is robbed by the stupid dsg. They are unreliable and the worst part is they handle like a shoebox. Maybe one day you will grow up and realize people have families and like to do things that require larger vehicles like towing my neighbors boat to the bay and blow through 50 gallons of fuel next weekend.
The Prius is in a different price bracket here in the Uk and would cost you at the current exchange rate just over $41,000 which makes the Smart appear a bargain.
I find it more wasteful to drive 2 people around in a smart car that gets 40mpg at best when you could carpool and take 5 people with you in a prius that averages atleast 50mpg.

When they crash test the smart car its against itself into a wall so even though it might get 4 or 5 stars doesnt mean its safe against another larger car. physics still win in wrecks usually the larger car or truck will win. i love the diesel one its so good on fuel never have to fill up and very nippy even on the highways dont try to put veg oil in it i tried and was a bum to start first time for whole day ive never had difficulty using veg oil in a diesel motor ive used for years ,i think it might have something to do with the parts being so small easily clogs up the injectors got it started again but that was a gamble on brand new car thought i had destroyed, it thank God , seems i only have worn the ignition

I do own a Smart and i don't have an issue with the transmission only because i knew what i was getting into when i got the car. As a matter of fact, it is only obvious when you start off, but once you get going, you can;t even tell it is changing gears. Besides there is the option of manually changing gears as opposed to letting the car do it for you. It makes life easier.

Yes, premium fuel is recomended, it will run fine on regular, but you will get less MPG, and with a ten gallon fillup you are only paying a dollor more per tankfull.
This car may be cute and tiny and somewhat underpowered, but it can handle corners like a cat's claws on carpet. I test drove one yesterday and they're very fun to drive.
@TheGizmo4382 They are very light which would make the suspension seem stiffer. It's light weight would also give the same Illusion. If the center of gravity were lower it would probably corner pretty well, but it comes down to actually taking a corner at high speeds to really know for sure how well it corners. I bring this up because the Smar Fortwo got a 3 star rating for rollover which is what most SUVs are rated at. :/ I just found out you have to put premium fuel in it, too. :/
To me these cars seem to be a waste of time. Unless, of course, you like their style. What ever happened the the old Geos and the Honda CRX HFs. Those easily could get up to 50mpg. I myself own a 1985 Honda CRX. I get an average mileage of 38 mpg. I'm not axaggerating when I say it has tons of leg room and cargo space. I can fit an enitre drum set in that little car. I cant understand why the car companies still using air conditioning compressors and alternators attached to the gas motor, drawing performance and extra miles per gallon instead of using lithium ion batteries and solar panels beside other sources for auto recharge those batteries and give us a smarter car and more fuel efficient. The air conditioning could be all electric giving us more control over it.
@mctfzipmail Because lithium ions are expensive the system would add more weight, and would still need all the compressors just powered by another electric motor. It would add weight that you would have to drag around while not using the AC. If its just solar charged your batts would go flat after a few dark cloudy days and if you use covered parking. so really nice concept but not practical.

There is technology for make the windshields been used as solar panels and the heat from the brakes be transformed into energy, beside many ether energy technologies that can be used and become more popular and cheap over time. Alternator and air conditioning get up to15 hp from the engine and some miles per gallon. That should be considered.

When I see this car I just get angry. I hate sharing the road with these cars and the planet with people who drive them. I just want to put a pebble in the road to watch it wreck. No one with any dignity should ever drive this. If you hit school children in one of these, they just laugh at you...and they should because if you drive one, you are a ridiculous dumb ass who deserves a painful life from every endeavor you undertake.

@fenixans MOST people who drive Smarts live in a very urban area .. I live in New York City and I see about 100 of them a day .. This car is super safe because traffic here goes 10 MPH .... But yes, if it is a hard hit ( something from a interstate or a head on ), then yes, there is a chance you will loose your legs .. But if you live in a big city, this car is perfect.

I cant understand why the car companies still using air conditioning compressors and alternators attached to the gas motor, drawing performance and extra miles per gallon instead of using lithium ion batteries and solar panels beside other sources for auto recharge those batteries and give us a smarter car and more fuel efficient. The air conditioning could be all electric giving us more control over it.

@mctfzipmail Because lithium ions are expensive the system would add more weight, and would still need all the compressors just powered by another electric motor. It would add weight that you would have to drag around while not using the AC. If its just solar charged your batts would go flat after a few dark cloudy days and if you use covered parking. so really nice concept but not practical.

@glennimmortal Lithium is used in everything from cellphones to laptops, why not cars? Is lighter and more reliable than acid ones. There is technology for make the windshields been used as solar panels and the heat from the brakes be transformed into energy, beside many ether energy technologies that can be used and become more popular and cheap over time. Alternator and air conditioning get up to15 hp from the engine and some miles per gallon. That should be considered.

@mctfzipmail Lithium ion is a cool technology but has major draw backs like hitting peak lithium etc etc...the maths does not work out for the mass-market, technology and innovation is cool but still we need to have a reality check every now and then. 200 watts of solar panels on a car amounts to diddle squat unless your car spends huge amounts of time in the sun. Probably not worth the manufacturing pollution, it might make someone feel good though?
