The Major Problem with HP is they are using Low-Mid End AMD (ati) Video cards and here is another suprise The Hdmi Output uses Intel's Hd 3000 graphics This 1 thing that Hp does not disclose prior to purchasing
Well , i am looking for high performance laptop. I mean like it can run high-end games such as gta iv , is it possible to run that game on this at least with 45 fps? And also , can you change your graphics card on this ; i heard most laptops can't change their graphics card since it is built in..
So lets get on the point , is this laptop worth buying to play games such as gta iv , gta sa , left 4 dead and others..?
It doesn't overheat. It feels like something is about to melt inside. It is hot as hell. It reaches 75 degrees celsius after few minutes of normal internet usage. This laptop doesn't have a proper cooling for the CPU and Video Card installed. I'd recommend to buy a Vaio F Series. Forget about putting that thing on your knees and work like 1 or 2 hours. Eventually get yourself some medical support because you might hurt y
The review is right on the mark, but mabye becasue they are using the i5 there was little to no heat issue. I have the i7 for over a year now and it works like a racehorse. The problem is that it does run really hot. I did not face any hardware failures or port failures mabye because the elevated 9 cell batter allows more air into the heatsink. The only failure I had is the 120W HP power adapter that came with it.
Fails to mention that this thing is a heater... you can literally fry an egg on it. If I had $1,500 to throw around, I would actually do it and post a video of it...
yes, you can pay $1 800 for a pc. But if you get a a 15" MacBook Pro, it comes with the same resolution, better graphics card, same processor, and 5+ hours of battery life. Also, not ever getting viruses is really good. just for around $2 400. You get What you pay for in a mac...
@iBananaCrackers Yeah my mac costs 2100, it's battery life is like 8 hours. Quad core i7, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, amazing graphics card, great processor. I'm in construction engineering technology and I use it for auto cad. It's so responsive and great graphics, everyone with pc's have the program trash and it's laggy.
@canascot02 If the rest of the your class had a $2100 Windows laptop I'm sure the performance on theirs would run laps around the Mac, just won't look as pretty doing it. For $2100 you could get a top notch quad core i7, 12+ gb ram, top tier GPU and like four extra battery units if you wanted.
@MrEaglez21 Funny you say that cause my friend has a $2000 hp elite book ... thing is a piece of garbage. Yeah it's got similar details as my mac like the aluminum and back lit keyboard. But it's already been sent in for repair at his cost by the way, and it's not even a year old. Macs are built to WORK! not like pc's.
don't get it...overall a bit flimsy and dumb design...only two USB ports plus HUGE overheating issues (my sis had one) and crappy battery life (about 2 hours)
The m17x is much more powerful, but then it's definitely heavier and more expensive. Yet it has pretty decent battery life, 3-5 hours, just because it has optimus. I wouldn't recommend the m17x unless you really
I've got my envy 17 for about a year now, and it's a great laptop performance-wise, but please don't buy it. It gets WAY TO HOT to still handle it. It regularly shuts down because of overheating issues too (if the core detects a temperature more than 95°, it shuts down). Very annoying.
Why must they build this like the Macbook Pro? Aren't they afraid of breaking any patent violations, especially with the suing mood Apple is in lately?
@1cipheradam yes, both are great choices, but if you want high rate of processor speed you will choose MBP with thunderbolt technology and if you want a long-live laptop that stays with you many years you will go for HP Envy,eSata and with USB 3.0 which is faster 20x than USB 2.0 which is more popular for every laptop. If you like gaming both are good.
i really dont know why they give this laptop SO much power...but do NOT hold it cool ! only the left side is really hot.the right is very cool.but when you hold your hand on the left side while you activate maximum power you can eat your grilled hand 5 to 10 minutes later !
Should I get this or a HP Pavillion dv7? Which one is better for General use, ( I like to listen to music) and I also like to play games on my computer, but I think both models can handle that. Any suggestions?
@monstaslaya For general use. Envy. For games Envy. The Pavillion is kinda a.. Mini edition of the Envy. But the Envy has overheating, and it's really loud. The Envy is also more expensive then the Pavillion. But you deside :D
I have the HP Envy 17. It's really good! The only bad things is, that it's pretty loud, and it gets really warm in no time! But otherwise it's perfect
@monstaslaya Besides the fact that most laptop companies only carry either ATI or Nvidia and rarely both, no not really. There is no difference between a I7-2640M in a HP laptop and a I7 in a dell or in a macbook, it is the exact same processor.
I have researched the newest laptops extensively over the past few weeks. A few things I notice are most laptop companies will charge you ridiculous amounts to upgrade RAM. You are almost always better off buying it yourself...
@monstaslaya ... from tiger or newegg. another thing to watch out for is most companies try to screw you with 5400 speed Hard drives. You want a 7200 speed make sure it has one (they are fairly standard with dells) or if you are ok with small storage then get a SSD hard drive.
also google the term "laptop deals" one of first sites you will see is techbargains. It has tons of awesome discounts and gets new ones for every company daily.

DONT GO FOR THIS. Look into the Dell XPS 15z it look like a mac, comes with the new 2nd gen Intel processors and 6GB of memory standard, it's tinner, and its the same price.
@Bammo956 DON'T GO FOR THAT I've looked into that. It definitely doesn't look like a mac, it's also definitely not "tinner", and it's just not as aesthetically pleasing. I'd suggest either this or a mac pro, whichever suits your taste. These two laptops are the best of the best, and it's practically impossible to beat them from any aspect.
CPU runs at 85+ degrees C at under 10% CPU load and will crash if it hits 90.
It's a super powerful and fast machine but if you exercise it at all then it WILL overheat and crash on you. You will be lucky after 6 months of ownership if you can get a 30 minute gaming session on medium graphics without it overheating.
DO NOT buy this computer I bought one waited 2 weeks for it. Got it and it had no operating system on it. Then they sent a new one with a defective screen and told me they could not send me another one cause they cant do a return twice. So I waited a month to have no computer and have to go shopping for another one.
I got a new HP Envy 17-1195eo but im worried about overheating because im a seasoned gamer that plays aprox. 5 hours a day. i know theres talk about Sandy bridge on this PC but on HP's website on the HP Envy 17 section half of the users say its overheating easily. so i wonder: is there any place to check it myself if its sandy bridge ?
Just place the back end of the pc on a on a book, and set the power settings on "recommended by HP" and it won't really be a problem. I'm talking from experience :)
@wetter2342 well. ive tried an gaming night. and the heat was affecting my graphics card but it went great anyways without doing what you said even though i saw that the processor was 70 degrees celsius hot, nothing serious happened even on my wooden table. anyways ive ordered a cooling pad to maximize my graphics and battery lifetime. but thanks for the advice anyways bro. THUMPS UP ! :D :D :D :D
@Abrahandsome3200 Dude take my advice: don't buy HP laptops. They are made with the cheapest electronics (and often of very low quality) available. Buy ASUS - with their excellent warranty terms, you will be better off.
I speak from experience - I have 2 HP Pavillions @ home dead after 3 years.
@nadeemnayeck Have you ever tried to use ASUS RMA process? It might as well be non-existent. Do your research. ASUS has a F- rating with BBB because of their horrible repair process.
I heard the HP Envy 17 is a great laptop for gaming. I also heard many issues like HDMI , VGA problems or overheating. I Really plan on gaming and I want a good laptop that won't disappoint my needs. Are these issues common and should I get this laptop,If not which laptop should I buy?
I've been hearing alot of issues regarding their heat as well, the general concensus is that a lare minority (1 in 3 average) have heat issues, and the rest are perfectly fine.
A solid alternative would have to be the XPS 17. It has the best speakers available, (Envy "Beats" is just a low interference headphone jack. The speakers are completely average on the envy.) a GT 555m on par with the radeon 5850 and being completely customizable. Just check out the dell website.
@oli367 If you want a good gaming laptop, and you want to pay good money, then I'd suggest looking into Alienware, you're going to get your money's worth.
Hey everyone, i'm looking for a new laptop, for gaming ONLY GAMING! :) , Is it good to host servers with? Can it run WoW(world of warcraft) at the highest graphics with 60 fps? This laptop, seems really good but if it cant do the the things i descriped above, give me a link to a better one. Still, not to expensive and i want the 17.3 inch. Reply FAST!! =)
For an amateur looking to create my own studio...should I go with a Mac Bookpro or This HP Envy 17? Which would be better for me a musician wanting a laptop solely for music production? Please Answer! Thanks so much!
@OpalEl Depends I love my envy 17 and the audio quality is awesome for my needs make sure if you want the mac make sure all programs you want to use are compatible with it
I have an Envy 17 and it's amazing. You can get 1920x1200 display and blu ray drive is standard. I'm a power gamer and the only part of the chassis to get hot is the top left which I think is where the main chipsets is. The only downside is the dreadful 1 1/2 hour battery life, but this is really a desktop replacement
this is my next laptop. the battery isnt a big problem for me since im normally in a place where i can charge. i fully customized this on the hp website and it comes out to 3 grand. next few paychecks are going towards this lol.
I want to buy this, but my concern from a company bought computers or laptops comes with bloatwares! I also want to install Wndows 7 Professional 64-bit on it.
Before I buy this, can I reformat the hard drive and install Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on it? Can I also replace the magnetic hard drive with a SSD? Will I have any driver complications?
@foxq8y Asus makes some sexy stuff, and with Dell you can have custom graphic images on them. But dude, as a macbook pro owner who just checked out this HP as well as others, nothing compares to a mac. The HP's feel like cheap toys and look ridiculous, like an ugly chick putting on makeup. Still wont look sexy. I'm no mac fanboy, just sharing my experience.
@chikensaregood Actually, that is incorrect. The Alto Parcs was the first computer to feature a GUI, mouse and even ethernet in the 70's. Apple copied this idea which was then copied by Microsoft. Apple tried suing Microsoft for this, but Microsoft went 'lol look at Alto Parcs. u stoled from dem' and that was that.
why the track pad is on so much rleft ? it should be in RIGHT cause we are right handers and all the icons should be in the right too ....cause when we click start menu all the icons gets hidden....
@inTubeHD because your right hand sits to the right obviously, if it was on the right side your wrist would be hanging off the laptop and be uncomfortable
@headshot360IN are YOU dumb enough not to comprehend the difference between viruses I can count on a single hand vs the millions on pcs? And the only virus I know of on macs was a Trojan and didn't actively spread itself like a true nasty.
Macs are still WAY better for virus security. Don't deny that.
Get a Mac for this price range. Steam games are going native. It's awesome.
Anyone reading this., do you suggest i get the new dell xps 17 fully loaded, or look at the Envy? I've never liked HP, (owned one), and have owned many Dell computers, and love Dell. The only thing stopping me in my tracks from buying the Dell 17 is the screen resolution at only 900p. The only thing the Envy has over the dell is slot loaded drive, and 10803dp.
My 15" MacBook Pro i7 with 7200 rpm HD lasts AT LEAST 5 hours on a single full charge while doing my graphic design work. HP needs to step it up in the battery department.
hai im here wanting to buy an hp envy for musical recording i heard that mac was the bedt for anything that has to do with arts and music, but im a pc fan and have no idea what to get i need a laptop that dosnt freeze up with multitasking and with the musical recording program , pro tools please reply thanks
wow, so the keyboard can get broken by liquid spills, the only reason why macbooks have waterproofed keyboards are cause the mac fanboys are writing their screen plays at starbucks and always spill their coffee
@LogicTVdotcom please i need a tip... i want to buy a new laptop but i don't know which one to choose... I liked this ENVY 17 but i also liked the TOSHIBA Satellite L655... I will like an excellent processor with a huge hard drive disk... and obviously some powerful graphic card... i will appreciated.. thanx
@Lex310191 Do you plan on gaming a all? The ENVY 17 might be the way to go if you plan on gaming. You can customize to higher resolution as well with the Envy 17. That being said, Toshiba also makes solid laptops!
Im really looking into buying the HP envy 17. However I have heard numerous reports of overheating of the system. Apparently the left rest pad gets extremely hot and almost unbearable. Also ive heard of reboots because of this heat. Have you experienced this at all?
@LogicTVdotcom Is this only good for gaming, can it be good for video editing, I don't plan on gaming only video editing, so should I get this or get something else?
@LogicTVdotcom i spilt juice on my laptop LOL the keyboard but didnt hurt the performance or hardware i love acer but im buiding a new pc with a gtx 460
Hi!. I looking for a new laptop and i am between the hp envy 17 or the hp pavilion dv7-4190us.. but i'm not sure which one is better.. which one would you recommend me? please!
the place where i live, laptops easily get very hot. So the only thing I'm concerned about is that whether this laptop gets too hot in comparison to the dv-6 series or other envy series
I'm returning my HP envy 14 just because of it. It just doesn't work and can't believe there is no software option to make far right vertical section of the touchpad dedicated to scrolling
yeah!! i´m from costa rica, central america and this week I'm going to buy my laptop and I was undecided, but after watching this video, I am absolutely determined to buy this laptop! thanks!
any body please answer me is this the latest envy laptop or i should wait for another envy in 2012 !!!!

Are these issues common and should I get this laptop,If not which laptop should I buy?
oli367 10 months ago
@oli367 Not really an issue with heating anymore. You can go for this or the new HP dv7 Quad.
LogicTVdotcom 9 months ago
@oli367
Just check out the dell website.
kingnovasephiroth 9 months ago
@oli367 If you want a good gaming laptop, and you want to pay good money, then I'd suggest looking into Alienware, you're going to get your money's worth.

I have an Envy 17 and it's amazing. You can get 1920x1200 display and blu ray drive is standard. I'm a power gamer and the only part of the chassis to get hot is the top left which I think is where the main chipsets is. The only downside is the dreadful 1 1/2 hour battery life, but this is really a desktop replacement
spankwalla 11 months ago
All the crippling over-heating issues put me off getting this laptop in the end.
Google "Hp Envy 17 over heating" and Google dies a little inside, finding all the results.

Thank you in advance.

@merts487 ya you can do this but make sure you copy the driver folder first

hey i want a list of the best looking laptops ever (other than mac), i dont care about the specs i just want a sexy laptop, what do you recommend ?
foxq8y 1 year ago
@foxq8y The Dell Adamo and Studio XPS laptops are pretty sexy. The N series by Asus are real nice too.
channelz48 1 year ago
@foxq8y Asus makes some sexy stuff, and with Dell you can have custom graphic images on them. But dude, as a macbook pro owner who just checked out this HP as well as others, nothing compares to a mac. The HP's feel like cheap toys and look ridiculous, like an ugly chick putting on makeup. Still wont look sexy. I'm no mac fanboy, just sharing my experience.

The only difference between the envy 17 and the envy 17 3D is that this last one can play 3d movies?
Doest it look different if you are not using the 3d glasses, or it is just an option?

Beautiful beast,Which one is better though This one or Hp Dv8?
And for all you pussies who say mac book is better do u know Pc came first which means they copied pc not the other way around
chikensaregood 1 year ago
@chikensaregood Actually, that is incorrect. The Alto Parcs was the first computer to feature a GUI, mouse and even ethernet in the 70's. Apple copied this idea which was then copied by Microsoft. Apple tried suing Microsoft for this, but Microsoft went 'lol look at Alto Parcs. u stoled from dem' and that was that.

why the track pad is on so much rleft ? it should be in RIGHT cause we are right handers and all the icons should be in the right too ....cause when we click start menu all the icons gets hidden....
inTubeHD 1 year ago
@inTubeHD because your right hand sits to the right obviously, if it was on the right side your wrist would be hanging off the laptop and be uncomfortable
sowknee 1 year ago

Thank you.

Have you experienced this at all?
bladeofkaim 1 year ago
@bladeofkaim no, we did not experience that at all. The ENVY 17 / 14 are new machines when compared to the heat issues found on the ENVY 15.
