  • A closeup on that nozzle!?

  • So what does this do? Does It let you know when your mag in in or when it's empty?

  • @Knapzter

Ultra Violet LEDs in the hop unit light up 'tracer' BBs, to give bright green glowing shots from your Airsoft gun.

Check out some of the night vision clips over in the Related Videos column --------->

  • UV is best, the BBs glow brighter and for a little longer than with other types (for the same exposure time).

You can get good results with Hi-Brite (maker's spelling) white LEDs.

  • For anyone wondering, this is called a "hutu"

  • Is that an acronym or a typo?

Either way, I'm not sure what you mean...

  • Acronym. HUTU=Hop Up Tracer Unit. The cheapest and most effective way to add a tracer unit to your airsoft gun. Involves drilling holes in your feeding nozzle and placing LED lights in, then wiring them to either your battery or an external and separate battery. However, the way you have them triggered to turn on is quite interesting, ive never seen it done like that before. Usually the lights are constantly on unless you unplug them or they have a very very basic switch.

  • Can't believe I didn't figure that one out *blushes*!!

I did make it a little over-complicated, but I do like playing with switches and stuff.

A simple microswitch activated by inserting a mag would do just as well.

  • This is quite a good idea but slightly ineffective as it requires two sets of magazines.

  • Thanks.

I over-complicated it really with the magnets and reed switch.

The subsequent ones I've done (in two G36s) just have a switch on the battery holder in the foregrip.

  • Un modified mag... which i cant put in right haha

  • Yeah, I know, still makes me wince!

Should have re-done it but couldn't be arsed ;o)

Holding the camera under my chin didn't help my concentration either...

  • EH?

  • spell it right next time little boy

  • Thanks.

As soon as I can borrow a decent Camcorder I'll video it in action...

  • Nice one Doc.

  • hey can you post a "how to video" for this mod?

  • Ah, this is from Arnes right?

Awsome mod, I would do it myself but I do not have the skills.

  • Yes. All the details are on Arnies.

I just posted this on here so the guys following it could see it working.

For those that don't use arnies, it's my DIY tracer mod to my Jing-Gong AK beta.

Three 3mm UV LEDs mounted in the hop unit (two in the feed tube, one in the top of the nozzle inlet)

They are powered by two AA batteries under the top cover, through a reed switch which is triggered by some small neodymium magnets set into the top of the mag.

  • Docv, I completely forgot about the thread and my comment..

But I think I am acctually going to try this.. With a light source in my Drum mag and the Hop-up, That would be a wonderfull combo..

  • I don't think there would really be any benifit to having a light source in the mag as well as the one(s) in the hop unit.

It depends on the gun I suppose, maybe if it's gor a high ROF and you do a lot of long sustained fire, then it may help to have the BB lit in the mag and then 'topped up' in the hop.

  • Yeah, Plus we rarely play at Night, But it would be an awsome thing to see. :D

Though, It still sounds like a really cool thing to try, The only thing is I spray bbs in my normal AK for support fire and bbs will cost a lot...

  • They are quite expensive aren't they!!

Worth it for the grin factor alone though!

Don't bother with the orange ones either, they only glow half as bright as the greens.
