  • so dyinnnn

  • He has the same same ind kick that John and Buddy Rich had

  • i think the gongs are his "mark" , I would love to make my kit sound like that... minus gongs , of course..

    he's got talent

  • That solo was amazing but I couldn't help but laugh when he just started making random noise with the gongs.

  • I remembered my friend "boligoma". He used to say, Carl Palmer was his virtual drum teacher. Only listening CP, my friend learnt to play. He was a ELP fan. Wherever he is.

  • Palmer still blows away drummers half his age.

  • Palmer is God.

  • FAIR..........AT BEST...........

  • @whokeithmoon You can in all honesty do better than him?

  • Geez, there's always idiots comparing their favorite drummer to someone else's, I'm not even an ELP fan and can see what an awesome drummer Carl is. To critcize Rich and Peart is stupid as well. I do agree that barker has nothing to do with drumming.

  • Interesting tuning on those toms

  • What CP did was very inovative. Tocotta is a percussive work of art. I never get tired of hearing it. His colaboration with Moog in triggering sounds on the synth from the drums was so ahead of it's time.

  • He is still one of the top dogs!!!!

  • The Solo (Carl Palmer) look it up

    A solo drum solo

  • Carl Palmer is no Neil Peart and Carl Palmer is no Travis Barker and Carl Palmer is no Buddy Rich....Carl Palmer is Carl Palmer---its not just DRUMS--its PERCUSSION. Even Neil Peart said he had to go back to the basics and learn to re-drum and get the precussion part of drumming. Thats what CP brings to the Kit....Use It All...Not just for show

  • @TomN2010 How many drummers does it take to screw in a light bulb? 20,000. One to screw it in the rest to say Neil Peart could have done it better, :-)

  • all these arguements rather if neil pert or mike portnoy is better makes me wonder, what if you put carl into the equation?

  • Il y a Carl Palmer, il y a Bill Bruford, il y a Phil Collins et il y a les autres...

  • i just came accross this and i was reading the stuff above, from a yr. ago its a good thing i didnt see it then. travis barker? it should be fucking illegal to mention his name in the same breath or sentance as carl palmer, are u fucking serious. carl is a god, and i dont even consider this as 1 of carl's best solo's.

  • this guy is amazing i've watched so many of his solos and never get bored.

  • Its just a bit of fun.............calm down

  • its hard to compare drummers sometimes. there style is very specific to the band. ringo starr was one of the most phenominal technical drummers but he sureley cant do the things carl palmer did. and also i would like to see a side by side of carl palmer and kieth moon. moon was just a sick individual

  • This solo is similar to the one at Montreux cept the drums weren't spinning round. Both really top notch by the way! :)

  • Some people look like little children : "who's stronger, Supeman or Godzilla?".

All of them are great drummers, enjoy all of them

  • He got better looking as he got older. He looks great here.

  • This is absolutely lame

  • Some of Carl Palmer's drum solo's from some of his most famous ELP album's ,he stole tap for tap from his friend and mentor Buddy Rich. When Carl 1st played his famous solo from Welcome Back for Buddy when they were driving in a car together,it was extremely obvious to Buddy who could only remark,"that's all really nice drum work that you stole".

  • @rematpac If you're a drummer and haven't stolen something from Buddy Rich there is something wrong with you..lol

  • @catfish1260 Good observation, but I was really surprised when someone demonstrated on youtube an important short solo from Tarkus that Palmer always plays and then showed Rich playing the EXACT same solo years ago.It was definitely plagerism,he could have at least changed one note, the timing, the feel, something.

  • I HAVE TO ADMIT HE WAS WHY I BECAME A DRUMMER, IT WAS I ADMIT HE WHO WHEN AT AGE 7, I STUCK ON IN GRANDDAD'S LP COLLECTION WELCOM BACK 3 SET, PLAYED IT AND THAT WAS IT!!!! FUCK ME I WAS IN LOVE AND HAVE PLAYED LIKE AMACHINE EVER SINCE. STILL MY YOU TUBE IS RECORDED SO BADLY AND THE TWO YEARS OFF SUCKED AS WELL BUT HEY MAN WITHOUT HE I'D BE DRUM LESS :) SO HE MAY HAVE ISSUES BUT WHOS STYLE ISN'T ISSUE FILLED , GOOD ON YOU POULMY GLENN FLETCHER NZ DRUMMER

  • I HAVE TO ADMIT HE WAS WHY I BECAME A DRUMMER, IT WAS I ADMIT HE WHO WHEN AT AGE 7, I STUCK ON IN GRANDDAD'S LP COLLECTION WELCOM BACK 3 SET, PLAYED IT AND THAT WAS IT!!!! • wow watching this guy play that fast with traditional grip really inspires me since ima snare player:)

  • Zenmaster Neil is the only one to surpass this man in drum soloing, Carl is much older so proper cred should be given in that respect. Both of them still put it out there like mad men to this very day...Carl twirls/backflips sticks better...for the record. He also was the mediating balance that kept ELP together lest E & L might have killed each other. I'll never forget the pic his wife submitted of him laying out by the pool with his practice pad next to the chair, rudiments. Thanks Carl!!!

  • Electronic toms sound like crap. But good drumming.

  • ONE thing that's predictable on Youtube is that when you see this you know people are going to comment with extremes of e.g. 'best drummer ever' & 'crap, worst drummer EVER !' etc

  • Fitness drums. At 1:44 it sounds lyke a big typewriter.

  • I love the internet. All sorts of people with no knowledge whatsoever try to come off sounding like they actually know something. Carl Palmer has sick skills. Try listening to ELP's music and see how well he holds it together. He's not like most drummers today just banging and moving around on the drums trying to be as loud as possible. And he's faster than anyone I've seen since Buddy Rich.

  • Easily one of the most overrated drummers ever...

  • No surprise that he likes Buddy Rich... And man, that is one complex drumset!!

  • Without Carl or Neil their would be no Portnoy !

  • a ultima bolacha do pacote!!!! ui

  • This is Carl Palmer in his heyday. I might agree with a few here that are saying this isn't the most musical solo in the world. Carl is basically just showing off his chops here, but there are some brilliant moments. Before he went downhill he was the deal in progressive rock.(love Collins and Peart too). I saw ELP long after his prime and he was a shell of himself. Seeing this is very nostalgic for me. I forgot what a beast he was.

  • Obviously impressive technical skills but this solo just did not grab me. I like drummers who pump out something that really gets your feet and hands tapping along. I don't go much on solo's where its like just one continuous drum roll that moves over the kit with no distinctive beats put in. I know some people might insult me but i cant control what my ears like to hear. It's like how someone might like the colour pink and someone else finds it ugly. Our brains just interpret things diferently.

  • @BzzzTango I respect that, I mean, I like Bob Dylan, but my friend just told me that she finds him annoying and doesn't like his music, so I see where you're going with that...

  • Buddy Rich said... the best "ROCK & ROLL" drummer was Carl Palmer...

    Anymore questions???

Travis Barker is CRAP!!! the only reason anyone brings his name up is because its been 20yrs since a GREAT drummer has been around!!! So, the next guy to come do something different? they start comparing him to the GREATS!!!

    Travis Barker, Great? THATS RETARDED!!!

  • Sorry, Buddy Rich's stick technique was beautiful but his drums often didn't sound beautiful. For example: his use of the cymbals was rather lame to me.

Carl Palmer made the whole kit absolutely sing. Did I forget about Rich? Absolutely not! But Buddy Rich is no Carl Palmer.

  • @flatlandsapex I agree in your assement of Buddy's stick technique. Buddy did a lot of double stroke stuff on the kit. Check out some of his solos you'll notice he tunes them up high for better rebound which, in my opinion, doesn't get the best tone from the drum all the time. Which probably explains why his drums didn't sound beautiful.

  • @flatlandsapex What, cause Carl uses double bass? Pfft.

  • I love Palmer and think he is grossly underrated.

  • They are all good with different styles and Egos and they all make a ton of money doing what they love what can be better

  • not sure about those other guys but better than Peart, more widely expressed.

  • Travis Barker is a terrible, terrible drummer with no skill. Comparing him to Palmer is just awful. Portnoy is more skilled, sure, but Palmer is an AMAZING DRUMMER. If you had to make a list of top 100 most skilled drummers of all time (including Jazz) I'd say Palmer gets a top 30 spot, same with Portnoy. Barker? Not even top 6000. EVERY Jazz drummer is better than him, and nearly every rock drummer that actually cares about drumming.

  • @damanwithdaskillz i'd say portnoy would break teh top 50 barker wouldn't even be allowed near teh list

  • Palmer is a monster!

  • Agreeing with Poulmy on this one. Carl Palmer is awesome, OK it's not so fast as others but the technique is fantastic. I've been fortunate enough to see this guy live many times and been to master class with him, nothing but love and admiration from me

  • Why triggers? Is he playing with a deathmetal band?

  • @rockdahaus NO WAY THAT HE IS IN A DEATH METAL BAND! IT'S JUST CLASSIC!

  • @bogmartin Classic? The sound is creepy anyway. He's a great drummer, but triggers I find stupid. Only for deathmetal and only on the kicks. There is no life in the shooting gallery!

  • Travis Barker's name should not be even mentioned on videos like this, who's the dickhead skater faggot who brought that up anyways? Shame on you.

  • if u love Carl and ELP take a look at these yt videos and type:

    ELP tribute tank

    Fabio Mancini jam session

    I think you will appreciate

  • Carl Palmer shits Travis Barker and Mike Portnoy.

  • buddy rich said that palmer is most powerful drumer, thats enough)

  • absolutely brilliant yet boring

  • he´s really good!

    loved it!:)

  • PLEASE ANSWER!

Does Carl Palmer just uses wrist?

I went to a show and he didn't use the finger AT ALL.

  • nothing special, PHIL COLLINS FUCK UR ASS CARL!

  • Just know when you are in the presence of the drumming god! They can all pretend but when push comes to shove C.P. ......... He da man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rogue in response to your disagreeing with me. you contradicted yourself. By saying that it is not technical because it is rudimentary. His speed and technicality comes from doing the rudiments and/or variations of the rudiments and applying them to the entire kit. Which would make him a technical drummer. Not just wicked fast. His attack control and speed and are connected to his technical background, which is rudimentary

  • I mean, c'mon!!! 3:03 -> WTTTTFFFFFF????

  • WTF is that??

  • I saw carl at a drum clinc in Glasgow 25 years ago I'm still not over it! It's him buddy ritch the all time best of all time.although I live ian pace of deep purple also.

  • Once I saw him playing alive.... This devil was just 5 meters away from me, hehehe... Unforgetable!!! Outstanding!! Surely he is a gifted musician!!

  • He's good but Peart got him beat.

  • @ThurstonGHowell3rd

na if you notice pert in his solos he is always focusing on his technique he never really branches out. palmer is one of the best drummers of all time my favorite however is moon the loon.

  • holy shit the toms and bass drum sound like absolute gash.

  • @zimmoframen My father worked with ELP at a show back in the early 90s, around the time he was using this Remo set. He says Carl's kicks and toms were literally filled with foam, and he triggered everything except the snare. I love Carl Palmer, but hate to agree -they sound awful.

Hopefully, he's not doing it anymore, right?

  • @drummerb0y117

Carl Palmer is the drummer for a band called Emerson ( Keith Emerson) Lake (Greg Lake) and Palmer (Carl Palmer This Guy) Neil Peart is the drummer for a band called Rush, Rush has a song on Guitar Hero 2 called YYZ (I don't know that much about rush)

  • @atgskater14 im sry but neil peart is better

  • @psykho15

Well this is purely about opinion, My top 3 drummers are Keith Moon Carl Palmer and John Bonahm

  • @atgskater14 ya i agree i wasnt tryin 2 start nothin...i would have 2 say my top 3 are neil peart, john bonham, & keith moon

  • @JorahDumond

You've never heard of Carl Palmer? How about Emerson Lake and Palmer?

I don't like the solo either but he can certainly play.

  • @Samsgarden

What i meant to say was Who is BETTER

    Srry bout that

  • wow that is crazy. . i never knew someone could actually play this fast in the traditional style amazing. . one of the greatest!

  • @fearless3geclipse,

Um, you never thought anyone could play this fast in the traditional style? Uh, have you heard of Buddy Rich? My understanding is that one of the advantages to the traditional style is that the left hand is faster, but not gonna get into that debate. ;) As per this video Carl Palmer has sick skills. About as fast a drummer I've seen this side of Buddy.

  • @JorahDumond ur right imo. main thing carl palmer has is lightening fast single stroke, thats bout it. the thing is though. back in the day he was the sh*t.

  • I like cheeseburgers.

  • LOVE Carl Palmer, saw ELP live, but not a fan of the triggered tom/bass sounds. Nothing against Carl or his mad skills, I just think natural drums would sound better for this type of solo. But that's just me of course.

  • @bigunit2112 Dude, don't go on a trollin' spree; ever heard of liking more than one drummer, mister Cozy Powell fanatic (who was also a fantastic drummer- RIP)?

  • @jorah, you have never heard way better. there is no way better. chuck norris is greater than all....except carl.

  • @flatlandsapex You forgot about Buddy Rich

  • es un pipi

  • never seen a tamborine with a mic

  • Carl's hand speed is still (to this day) right up there with the fastest. He was ahead of his time, and a tactictian on the tubs.....and a much more interesting player than 99% of the guys the young people now days seem to worship. (and BTW, his foot technique was established long before your metal gods) (granted, he's no Gene Hoglan----but Carl was (and is) THE MAN!!!!!!

  • Travis Barker is an insult to all drummers, because he plays these fundamental grooves that anyone can play who's played for 2 years, but he plays them whilst going crazy so people who know nothing about drumming think that's great, and that he's the greatest. But when people see this marvel of drumming they think it's okay because their only frame of reference is shitty Travis Barker. OH and by the way Joey Jordison can fuck off.

  • Carl Palmer will be a guest on The Bob Rivers Show today, August 11th, at 8:30 a.m. Pacific Time. Tune into KZOK 102.5 FM Seattle or stream audio and video at bobrivers[dot]com

  • You guys are so narrow minded... This solo is huge. Carl Palmer is a great drummer but Mike Portnoy or Travis Barker are great too ! Sure it's not the same thing but dudes, it's music ! it's not a competition of technique or whatever.

Carl Palmer is obviously better than Travis Barker but I still a fan of Travis' style. These guys have an unique drumming style. That is all.

  • Yes, phantastic, but how exited can a non-drummer get about a drum solo?

  • @Poulmy

Every word you say is right. Carl Palmer is the "Ben Gould" of drumming. Listen to jazz and what ever over the last 40 years........ Ther is no drummer replacing Palmer...!!!!!!!!

  • @Poulmy Yeah, and he's not exactly a spring chicken in this vid. When he was 25 he was much faster.

  • Joey Jordison is a bitch

travis barker can suck palmer's left nut

  • @rrdrums110 portnoy is as good as palmer man

  • God i hate drum solos pub bands had the right idea years ago,The drummer would go off on one while the rest of the group put their gear in the van...

  • Smokes it, and for no frills give a brother deserved credit with Alphonse Mouzon, view "Eleventh House Live 1973(Added Video)"

  • This guy is fast as fuck! But this solo has no personality. It's just him flailing away super fast on his drums.

  • A true legend!

  • @nonmeaculpa so true.

  • pretty much just rolling around the drumset really fast. no Rhythm or groove what so ever. anyone who practices enough can do this.

nice little show though. except for the part at 1:43 that was just weird and unneccesary.

  • Nice stick tricks. Not really rhythmic, but damn is he fast as fuck.

  • @RogueKovu That is because Carl Palmer is a very technical drummer

  • @Barhund1 I disagree. This is not technical at all. This is very rudimentary. Just wicked fast.

  • @RogueKovu thats the point of carl palmer he isnt constrained to a time signiture or what not

  • Incredible!

  • @nonmeaculpa hahaha you can really tell by the comments who's a drummer and who isn't, that tambourine was so pointless....you, sir, are on point

  • @nonmeaculpa hahaha you can really tell by the comments who's a drummer and who isn't....you, sir, are on point

  • GONG ACTION!

  • Gawd! This guy must sleep with his drum sticks!!!

  • I don't have any drumskills and i don't know anything about drums but this dude has to be the best drummer in the world.

  • Rivalled only by the great Buddy Rich, Chick Webb and Gene Krupa.

  • what a fag, and a show off

  • Not too crazy about the sounds of the toms, but still a sweet solo!

  • He looks like Joey Deacon trying to eat his dinner with a hammer and trowel but I guess that's the nature of show-boating.

  • sounded like ass

  • Yeah if you see music as a competition, I guess it's logical to make all these bullshit comments.

  • we know who joey jordisons idol is. hahaha

  • I like Palmer, but his double bass playing is so sloppy.

  • Portnoy and Carl are better then ever one who is fucking reading this so shut the fuck up there both legends in the drum community

  • @rrdrums110 yeah right - his drums sound so much like garbage that it makes his solo obsolete - also he does nothing but speed where as portnoy has perfect sounding drums, and does more than just play fast - is much more dexteric and creative than this average joe.

  • roadworks...:(

  • Happy Birth Day ! Carl !

  • He knows what the audience needs!

  • First concert I ever saw. Brain Salad Surgery tour in the Salt Palace. A show I'll never forget. Carl is a very good drummer and very fast. His drum miking always left a lot to be desired. I always thought it was do to his stainless set but this appears to be wood and still not a lot of punch.

  • yeah, too random and his drums sound crappy .

  • drummer for dream theatre

  • too random

  • weird solo but the guy rules !

  • Buddy was the best

    But Carl is easily second

  • this guy is crazy

  • @Antoniodoval94 I wonder what your drum solos sound like.

  • Yeah, not being as good as Carl Palmer really makes you suck.

So basically, everyone besides Marco, Vinnie, Dave W, Carl, and Buddy suck right? Is that your logic RR?

  • I think it's great but i've always maintained he uses too much snare.

  • that big gong sounded like ASS. and im a multiple paiste gong owner. because of carl palmer.

  • This is one of my favorite Carl Palmer drum kits. Not the top one, but number 2 in my line of favored Palmer kits. This solo from the '90's ELP shows was among the best, but he did 2 sometimes 3 solos during shows in the '70's and was just amazing. So many drummers can't come close to his skills and ability. Anybody who hasn't seen him live is missing out.

  • @elpyesrockman I got to see ELP live twice in '72 and '73. It changed my life. Carl Palmer IS AN AMAZING DRUMMER. His strength is awe inspiring,

  • Very Good drummer , I went Show in Brasil , Asia 2007

    But., prefer Mike Terrana

  • Hey NamesWasted quick question sporto...are you upset because he doesn't sit on your lap? Someone who takes the energy to write something like that might be out of KY. Cheers!

  • This may not be his best solo, but Carl Plamer dose not have to prove anything to anyone. He is one of this countrys best drummers. Nuff said.

  • Heey waar is dit?

  • nice tambourine

    what a douce

  • great drummer 1 of my favs 4 many reasons

  • A rock legend. Like Peart, Bruford, Bozzio, Aldridge, Moon, McBrain, and Bonham.

  • This is why Carl Palmer is one of the greatest soloists of all time.

He plays for non-drummers and other intrumentalists. He entertains !!!

He understands the value of entertainment better than most.

    Carl, you rock !!!

  • buddy rich is the best

  • watch a solo of Palmer in his twenties. Now thats something. This--i didnt like :/

  • Well what do you want him to say? Carl is a more accomplished drummer than Neil. And thats coming from a big Rush fan.

  • what makes neil peart great is his blend of rock drumming with jazz drumming

  • Yeah I agree. I was just saying that I don't think he is that good at pure jazz.. Carl would be more cut out for that.

  • ya there are certainly better jazz drummers than neil, but there certainly arent any better rock drummers!!

  • Yes there is Carl Palmer

  • i did not like that at all.

  • hes a fuckface

  • Carl Palmer can go take a crap in his own mouth!
