  • I power on stall my chief before spinning. When it buffets at stall, then step on the rudder in the direction of the spin. HOLD the elevator back to keep the plane stalled, ailerons and rudder in the direction of the spin. Lead the recovery by a half turn by stepping on opposite rudder and neutralize the ailerons till the turn stops. Neutralize the elevator to break the stall,(do NOT go past neutral on the elevator). then recover from the dive. Your airspeed should not exceed roughly 80 mph.

  • I've got a Chief too. I don't think you had it fully stalled at the start, which means you had a spinal dive, not a true spin?

  • Wow, your airspeed really wraps up, I believe I saw over 120 indicated. I just did some spins in my Chief today (look for them on you tube under aeronca spins, I noticed during the spin, I was seeing 0 indicated airspeed, and in recovery it went to 60 or so. But I always kept the angle of attack high so not to build higher airspeeds in the recovery. I was by myself, which may also attribute to different speeds.

  • Nice spin! I had a Chief (N86158) for six years, Great little airplane! Spins sure make 'em sing.

  • Looks like about 1.5 turns? Nice control! Had a Champ, but the Chief looks quite fun too. Owned N3923A, 47 Champ BCM with seaplane door that raised up under wing, and could fly with it open in warm weather. In Cold weather it didn't matter WHAT you did, just freeze.
