No he is right. It makes easier sense for us to translate Kami as god, but in the eyes of the Japanese it makes more sense to translate it as "spirit".

kami does mean god !!!! many subtile and hidden truth about shintoism were undiscovered so it is better to moderate when you speak about shinto and kami .thanks
