@Donkulatedfish The 50's one is so different it's hard to compare. It's a good movie though. I personally don't love it like it this one, but check it out if you like old school sci-fi.
The remake is actually pretty good, but for a creeping sense of unease and sheer paranoia, coupled with classic old-school in-camera special effects, you'll never beat Carpenter's The Thing.
A great story, brilliantly told (and acted, and directed.....etc, etc)
Thank you snake2006. I have the video of this film (first version from 1949 or 50) and for that time it was very amazing. When i saw this movie i was 8 years old and remember i was very frightened . Since that moment i have started to read all about ufos and interested by life in others worlds. I actually go to the fields to study ufos, aliens, chupacabras, abduction cases etc etc.
@REGirYoshiSuper8 i dont get it. the pictureof the man with lights coming from its head has nothing to do with this movie. but they used it as the cover for the movie.
@100mmatte It is suppose to represent that the man is the thing or one of the things, just disguised as a person. The light has to do with it being alien and not really knowing it's true form. It's true form is not shown in the movie, every time that it is shown, it's a person, dog, or in the process of imitating a creature other than itself. But the original alien's form is not shown. Also to signify the title of: Man is the warmest place to hide, hence the light from the man.
This music is wonderful for a terror film, also this picture was amazing, but i always remember the first version, filmed by 1949 or 1950. The first version was named WHO GOES THERE ? and also the film was developed in Alaska.I think somebody is going to remember this version. Regards, merry christmas and happy 2012.
The film was called The Thing from Another World. It was directed by Howard Hawkes, and its set at the North Pole instead of the South Pole like the original story and the other 2 Thing films are.
LOOK IM GOING TO SAY ! THING... THING GET IT>?? no really i have the solution in fukk... it has been handed down... do not frar... do not procrastinate... move calmly and have confidence that we will piece together and organixe immacculate devastation.... whisprer me a secret if questrions... delete post as ap copy if needed
Just listening to the synthesizer section from 4:27 to 7:12, I can already draw an immediate comparison between this and the end credits theme of another film released in 1982 that John Carpenter worked on: Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Listening to these two soundtracks side-by-side is a must for all Carpenter fans.
Several years ago, I was living in a student dormitory for a school that was in a reasonably remote location, even the nearest store was two miles away...it was mid-winter and there was this huge blizzard and the power went out, all you could see was the moonlight glowing off the snow banks outside and the sound of wind blowing because it was really dark...
this is probably the only film that still frightens me to this day, i love it and this theme. I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter Tied to this F**king couch!
"Somebody in this camp isn't who they appear to be..right now that could be one or two of us....by spring it could be all of us!" ~ R.J. Macready Helicopter Pilot. U.S. Outpost#31
This fine movie has something in common with one of my favorite westerns, High Plains Drifter. The scene where the whip comes lashing out of the night like a monster's tentacle and through the space above the batwing doors in the saloon of Lago/Outpost 31, snaring a thug by the neck as he stands near them. It looks just like that tentacle grabbing Windows by the neck, or shooting from the Norris head's mouth. Since Eastwood basically is a Thing himself in that movie, it's only fitting.
Finally... the actual theme song! By the way, watch it on bluray. It's like watching the movie for the first time. Sad that they don't make horror films like this anymore. This is simply a magnificent film and the song hits that right spot adding more intensity to those tense moments in the film.
todays horror films are awful. not only are the stories, characters and special fx terrible... but they're not even scary. carpenters films were horrorfying...even the music. ( which he composed himself for most of his films)
@Johnlindsey289 i dont think so . the thing is sci -fi horror. it had a great plot , interesting characters, and a kick ass alien. saw was good, but i just cant compare the two.
@Johnlindsey289 saw and hostel are movies that are gory and disgusting...but scary...i dont think so. the exorcist, the omen, night of the living dead, dawn of the dead, the fog (the original, not that generic piece of crap that came out a few years ago). these movie's got under your skin and stood with you for days, even weeks after( well at least for me they did).
Hostel and Saw are mild compared to Cannibal Holocaust, Last House on The Left, Maniac (1980), Cannibal Ferox, etc. seen those? Cannibal Holocaust is very disturbing and snuff-like at times and even features live animals being slaughtered on film including a live large turtle being beheaded then ripped open from it's shell as we see it's insides to even a monkey getting it's head lid sliced to have it's brains sucked, what do you think fo that?
Seen Ichi The Killer? really sick Japanese horror-action-comedy film with graphic torture especially to a nipple and splatter abound plus rape. Cannibal Holocaust's DVD comes with an animal-cruelty free version that cuts out that stuff
Thank god the CH DVD comes with an animal cruelty free version that cuts out that stuff and leave the human violence in, but good thing no one was actually killed within the found footage within the film. It was the film that began the found footage horror genre before Blair Witch, REC, Paranormal Activity etc and influenced them. the uncut CH made me sick when i saw that 10 years ago in a re-issue but good thing we have an animal cruelty free version.
Anybody agree that what make's this scary them song unique is that it doesn't just have an essence of scary but also depression and a feeling of hopelessness? A feeling that is not only fear but also depressing and dreadful? Unlike horror movies where the back round music is purely scary sounding? It just sounds like a horrible dreadful extremely sad thing that's happening that virtually has become unstoppable. Such as this "Thing" infecting the entire Animal Kingdom Earth gave birth to?
Video uploaded on my birthday and one of my favorite movies. John Carpenter is a fucking genius. Dumbasses today blowing Chris Nolan wouldn't know proper filmmaking if it came up and buttraped them and then turned them into a Thing.
IMO, This sequel beats the first release, And, It's more accurate to the story, When I think of The Film , The Alien, And, That's a favorite of mine, IMO, the Thing, is even Scarier, They're both Scary, But, "The Thing" cuts the edge!
One of the best movies ever!!! The main theme gave it that ill vibe. As a twelve yr old kid seeing this in 82' and the summer before that seeing 'Escape from NY' turned me into a John Carpenter fan for life. If cats aren't feeling this movie...FUCK 'EM!!!!
The reason the Thing did poorly at the box office was because it was the stupid 80's and Reagan America wanted their generic sugar-coated happy ending movie. I say stupid 80's but in reality that's when he made his best material. The only good 90's movie he did was In the Mouth of Madness. The Thing was too bleak, brutal and disturbing for the times. Most horror audiences demand that in a film today, but pioneers like Carpenter helped break the mold.
Well this came out at the same time as ET and it didn't help when it should have came out for Halloween instead of the summer of 1982 and has a cult following.
The movie rocks...even though I am 40 yrs old it still scares the balls off me....some guy even made a gaming level out of the US base camp for AVP 2...pretty sweet level and scary...especially when u go down into the generator room.
due to this film,Carpenter was called the pornographer of violence and i understand why,the scenes were really shocking and bloody. The score was also frowned upon and "won " a Razzie Award nomination.Damn shame.
I've already said that this is one of my favorite scores of all time. Its eeriness really fits with this movie. You really get a sense of the wind and the cold from this track, which is an important part of the paranoia and suspense in the fill. The track also captures the idea of fear of the unknown, which is the basis of the film. I always get an eerie feeling when I hear this score. I LOVE IT!
@Bronzewhaler82 You think so too? Sweet! In Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide they gave this movie 1and 1/2 stars out of 4. What a pathetic rating for one of the greatest sci fi movies of all time. This movie came out only a few months after E.T. Everyone was in love with the friendly alien, so this movie was harshly reacted to. It got a lot more fans with its video release. I'd take the mean alien over the friendly alien any day. This score fit this movie, PERFECTLY!
@Johnlindsey289 The reason why this film never did well was because of E.T unless that's what you mean by your comment cus it The Thing & E.T were out in the same year 1982 but you know that LOL anyway I prefer this to E.T but can't really compare cus this was a horror and E.T was a family film
@MrDontstareitsrude Yeah, I guess they wanted a nicer, friendlier alien who eats Reeses and heals cuts with his finger rather than a mean, nasty one who kills people and imitates them soon afterwards.
@videogamehunter820 Hi with the rating 1 & 1/2 stars was that roger ebert by any chance cus every film i think is good they always give it a bad rating the same was with big trouble in little china that didn't do so well but i love that film audiences in the 80's were harsh and didn't know a good film when there was one i too prefer the thing over E.T.
@MrDontstareitsrude I don't know for sure if it was Ebert that gave this movie that rating (Leonard Maltin's book didn't say, and No, Maltin is not the one who gives the ratings), but it's definitely a possibility, because Ebert called it "A good barf-bag movie". Yeah, as much as I love Spielberg, I have to go with THIS alien movie as the one I prefer.
Cool. Also the book entitled "Creature Features" by John Stanley gave this movie 4 out of 5 stars. At least some critic know a great horror movie when they see it.
@videogamehunter820 Underrated movie too. Sure its got a lot of respect now but not like Halloween. If they had chosen a better release date, not around the time of E.T., I think it would have performed well at the box office and been praised by critics.
This music appeals to your feelings and fiddles with your nerves. John Carpenter is a helluva great director and orchestra virtuoso in movie making.

Monster: "AAAAAAAAAAAAARGGHHHH!"
Kurt Russell: "Yeah fuck you too!" (throws dynamite at it)
One of the best lines ever said to a villain before killing him ever!

This movie was the Saw of it's time, a film that assaults the senses and alienates the audiences kind of theme

I LOVE IT!

This movie is pure genius. The very first scene opens with a pulsing hostile sense of desperation, and it doesn't quit until you're ready to give up.

One of my favorite movies and scores of all time. A very, very, very underrated score in my opinion.

@videogamehunter820 The whole thing was underrated
Bronzewhaler82 1 year ago
@Bronzewhaler82 You think so too? Sweet! In Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide they gave this movie 1and 1/2 stars out of 4. What a pathetic rating for one of the greatest sci fi movies of all time. This movie came out only a few months after E.T. Everyone was in love with the friendly alien, so this movie was harshly reacted to. It got a lot more fans with its video release. I'd take the mean alien over the friendly alien any day. This score fit this movie, PERFECTLY!

@videogamehunter820
Bad timing is what this movie suffered through, it should have been released on Halloween or in May of that year instead of June
Johnlindsey289 11 months ago
@Johnlindsey289 The reason why this film never did well was because of E.T unless that's what you mean by your comment cus it The Thing & E.T were out in the same year 1982 but you know that LOL anyway I prefer this to E.T but can't really compare cus this was a horror and E.T was a family film
MrDontstareitsrude 11 months ago
@MrDontstareitsrude Yeah, I guess they wanted a nicer, friendlier alien who eats Reeses and heals cuts with his finger rather than a mean, nasty one who kills people and imitates them soon afterwards.

I agree
videogamehunter820 11 months ago
@videogamehunter820 Hi with the rating 1 & 1/2 stars was that roger ebert by any chance cus every film i think is good they always give it a bad rating the same was with big trouble in little china that didn't do so well but i love that film audiences in the 80's were harsh and didn't know a good film when there was one i too prefer the thing over E.T.
MrDontstareitsrude 11 months ago 2
@MrDontstareitsrude I don't know for sure if it was Ebert that gave this movie that rating (Leonard Maltin's book didn't say, and No, Maltin is not the one who gives the ratings), but it's definitely a possibility, because Ebert called it "A good barf-bag movie". Yeah, as much as I love Spielberg, I have to go with THIS alien movie as the one I prefer.

@videogamehunter820
Mick Martin and Marsha Porter gave this 4 out of 5 stars on their video and DVD guide.

@Johnlindsey289
Cool. Also the book entitled "Creature Features" by John Stanley gave this movie 4 out of 5 stars. At least some critic know a great horror movie when they see it.
videogamehunter820 9 months ago
@videogamehunter820 Underrated movie too. Sure its got a lot of respect now but not like Halloween. If they had chosen a better release date, not around the time of E.T., I think it would have performed well at the box office and been praised by critics.
