As awful as this strike was, it was actually the lesser of two evils. The other option was to make a frontal attack on japan, which from experience we knew the japanese would fight to the last man, with both sides losing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of soldiers. Even with this strike, the US could have done worse. They intentionally did not attack Tokyo, because of the massive casualties that would cause.

They were preparing for the largest invasion in human history, when Truman was told of something that might end the war quickly. That is when he was told about the Manhattan Project. @RogertheDon Both bombs would have been used anyways, it was political. One of the main reasons was to warn Russia. the vacuum of power in Europe could easily been filled with Soviet control. Japan was in the process of surrender before the bomb was used. Well known. They needed to test it on a city and see the results.
