  • I watched this game on tv! when he made it I jumped out my seat!

  • At least this kick was good, unlike the field goal he missed against Baltimore on the Sunday before Thanksgiving in 2007. He missed it, and the refs erroneously called that kick good.

  • @FutureNewsAnchor What are you talking about? that kick against baltimore was good.

  • I was at this game as well when I was a student. This game still ranks as one of the loudest I've ever been to at Memorial/DKR Stadium!

  • Before Mack brought in his "Come early, be loud, stay late, wear orange " game culture it was Mackovich's: Come in whenever, be loud for important snaps, leave early if we're winning or losing, and wear black, white, various blues and greens, plaid, yellow, flannel, red, brown, the occasional orange, and whatever the hell else.

  • @brownwillow

Ha ha ha. True story. Mackovic's final season was my freshman year. Rough season, but at least it got him fired.

  • i was at this game... i remember i closed my eyes when the ball was snapped. Tikki and Rondi Barber played for Virginia during this game. The Amazing thing about that was 50 yard kick into the wind.

  • i was at this game...i was like 8 years old...and i've been to every home game since....it's crazy how much the program and the stadium have changed...(for the better)

  • are u kiddin mack brought in nathan vasher jamaal charles jermichael finley roy williams etc he has brought texas to the promiseland mackovic is nowhere near as good as mack holla

  • that was in 95 we had a good team and the barber twins came ronde and tiki both nfl stars and we beat em virginia was good then but not now very few people know that eric metcalf is from virginia

  • I think it started before that. People were starting to notice Texas at least as far back as 1994. Remember when they beat the Tarheels in the Sunbowl on New Years Day (and Mack Brown was NC's coach, ironically). Ricky was a big attention getter, but again it was Mackovic and his offensive scheme that brought RIcky in. Bottom line: John Mackovic saved Texas and built the foundation Mack Brown has tried to cruise on.

  • Man, I used to love UT. I moved to Austin in '95 and my wife and I went to every home game- used to be able to get $5 'Stampede Zone' tix at the grocery store for the endzone. I was at this game, and I maintain this game was the tuning point that got UT moving up again, if one game can do . It was John Mackovic, not that sleaze Mack Brown, that made Texas a contender again. The next year '96 was 'Roll Left' against Nebraska and the win for the first Big XII Championship! I miss those days!

  • texaswarhawk, I bought my $5.00 ticket at RANDALLS Grocery & was also in the North endzone. People say Mack Brown is a good recruiter, but what player DOESN'T want to come here?

  • I know. I bought mine from the old Randalls on Lamar St. that is now a Half Price Books! Fun times! As far as Mack Brown, I think he is still the most overrated, overpaid coach in college football. A stupid defense by USC and Vince Young's raw athleticism on a broken 4th & 14 got them the Natl' Championship - Mack Brown had nothing to do with it. What has he done since? He still gets outcoached and nearly beaten by WAY inferior teams. Mackovic was much better offensive coach.

  • And I think he brough in, on the whole, the best UT players of the last 20 years. Bryant Westbrook Tony Brackens, James Brown, Shawn Mitchell, Priest Holmes, RIcky WIlliams, Major Applewhite,, Phil Dawson....besides Vince Young, who has Brown recruited to hang his hat on? Cedric Benson? Yuk.

If Mackovis had just gotten a killer defensive coordinator, he'd still be at UT and probably have 2 to 3 Championships by now. Just my humble opinion.

  • He was headed in the wrong direction after the 1997 season and Texas cut ties enough said. Im not even going to say anything about Mackovic winning 2 or 3 titles. I think his career record of 95-83-3 speaks for itself.

  • Don't be too hard on him...look at the talent he brought in. Where was Texas before he got here? Remember, Brown inherited a really good team.

  • Im not going to argue with you saying Texas wasnt down pretty much throughout the 80s and early 90s. He did do a pretty good job recruiting but he had the same problem Fred Akers had he couldn't win the big one. Now Mack has lost some big ones and some that should have been for sure wins but nobody has put together a stretch of consecutive seasons like Mack at Texas.

  • what the heck are you talking about

it was totally ricky williams staying for his senior season to win the heisman

that has done so much for recruiting and the rebuilding of the fan base.

  • That kick was into a 20 mph stiff wind. It looked like the wind actually started to push the ball back at one point. Everyone in the stadium knew how good of a kicker he was, but few thought he was gonna be able to make it into that wind.

  • What year was this game play?

  • 1995. It was the week after Texas had that extremely disappointing 24-24 tie with a pathetic OU team. I was at both games.

  • Oh yeah, THAT game. Ugh.

I was there in the upper deck, great seats. All I can remember was the idiotic 4th & 1 Mackovic called deep in OU territory.

Going for it on 4th &1 wasn't bad, but calling a delayed hand off 5 yards deep? Never understood THAT call - Texas turned it over on downs - what a waste. If he'd gone for the field goal, Texas wins 27-24. One of the few bone headed offensive plays I remember him calling.

  • wow phil dawson is AMAZING, he just kicked a 57 yarder for the browns in the preseason!!!!

  • Yeah VT hit a 56 with the wind, he hit a 50 into the wind 30mph I think. Yeah he probably could have had any chick he wanted that night.

  • As the great Verne Lundquist would say... how do you do!

  • Home cookin' to thank for this victory for Texas! Jeffers scored for UVA and the FG was good...and they weren't even close. Blatant cheat job!

  • Sour grapes. lol

  • wow! great moment. boy, dkr memorial stadium sure looks a lot different nowadays. mack has definitely risen Texas football up to the next level.

  • That was a great kick. As a Cleveland Browns fan I have to say that his 49 yard field goal against Buffalo was one of the greatest kicks ever. And Phil Dawson is nothing but class as a person too. He should have been the probowl kicker this year.

  • This was my second UT game ever. It was also Ricky Williams' first 100 yard rushing game.

  • this was my first UT game ever...WOW it was AWESOME!!

    Hook 'Em!

  • ravens suck

  • Haha, I wonder if this makes Ravens fans wince... LMAO!

  • Is it me, or has Phil Dawson not aged AT ALL?

  • god damnit phil dawson. i think i love you. JK GO BROWNS!!!

  • Now, he did it again against the Ravens.

  • wow that was amazing game, im a browns fan and they said that they had to review it my heart skipped a beat lol

  • I was at this game and remember it well. This clutch kick won me some money as I had bet UT would win it straight up.

  • I remember watching that kick IRL. It really didn't look like it was any good, from where I was sitting, and I went and put my head in my hands. Then around my I heard the roar of the crowd rise up, and I looked up from my hands and then rose up and waa'd.

  • He's a gem. I love having this guy in cleveland.

  • I think this is the kick that got him to the NFL.

  • i was in honduras during this game i remember finding a tv showing espn and seeing that the longhorns won. It made the rest of the trip even better. Honduras sux though.

  • I remember this game. WOW. I watched it on Raycom.

  • That kick was un-real

  • I was at this game...amazing...best Texas game I had ever been to until the Rose Bowl against Michigan...
