Does anyone know what china cymbal Simon is using here on the right? And does anyone know a paiste cymbal with a similar sound? I'm looking to get a china with that really loud, aggressive, clashing explosive sound to use for heavy accents. Cheers
Check out my channel. The Dirty Cricks cover The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again. I totally use some of Simon's approach to it (like he played on the '89 Tour). Only Simon fans will get it. :)
First part of the solo was boring.Just showing off with all the speed and so.But the second part where he came down,i think thats when he really started to play.Beautiful.
Man!!!! Simon is just awesome!!!! his drumming is totally singular, musical and chopsy all at once- truly he is one of the greatest contemporary rock/fusion drummers of the day-
check out this solo from a HUGE Simon Phillips fan and the author of
"The Book of Funk Beats- grooves for snare bass and hihat"
Great to see someone playing something different - Tama / Zildjian are not as popular as they used to be. As good as DW's sound, it's not all about the drum shell itself. The drummer and the way he tunes his drum heads have a lot to do with the sound created.
@utahdrumtech tama and zildjian are imo probably the highest standard...unfortunately now drums and drumming is all about volume, speed, and company innovations...almost everyone forgot the timeless sound of tama and zildjian and their value through time
ya zildjian a customs are so fucking good only bad part about zildjian is they mostly discontinued teh 14" dyno beat hi-hat and sum ppl think meinl is better than zildjian lol
@Pontsg funny thing is, simon nearly played Paiste. If only they got him new crashes. He broke some and Paiste wouldn't help him out. Just around that time Ziljian offerd to sponsor him with cymbals.
I'm a huge Simon fan, this video is great!!!! I've love his drumming through the years for Judas Priest, Jeff Beck, The Who, Pete Townsend, etc. The sound of his set is incredible. His toms are like cannons, I believe he tunes them higher than most people. I finally got to see Simon live a few years ago, his solo was like rolling thunder, fucking amazing!!!! A living legend, no doubt.
You guys talking about groups for Simon? How about Judas Priest, Michael Schenker, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, The Who and of course Toto. He's also done some excellent progressive fusion solo work. A 'studio" drummer who has contributed to many world class acts off and on the stage!
i saw this guy at a Tama, ibanez, laney showcase performance, andy timmons, paul gilbert, steve vai. some great music. excellent drummer. absolutley individual in his style and technique...
I saw his clinic a few months ago, and it was insane! One of the major things I noticed is that he can switch his lead hands back and forth like it is nobody's business! He is pretty much totally ambidextrous when it comes to drumming. It was an awesome clinic!
True... But still, a shame he didn't play with one band in the '70s. I have an album from 1975 or 1976 where he plays the drums for Dave Greenslade, and that sounds amazing. IMHO I think he should have stayed in the porgrock genre... I'm not a big TOTO fan, and they are a bit too popish for MY taste...
For some reason I dont like this solo...it seems bland and boring to me. The only real thing he did that was special was his 1 handed roll, but he even did that slow.
Wow. This REALLY reminds me of Doane Perry's solo on Jethro Tull's "Dharma for One". Check it out! Seriously, they're pretty similar, especially the beginning. Simon is a FANTASTIC drummer.
IMHO though, the coolest looking kit of all time was Stewart Copeland's kit on The Police tour of 83ish. Peart of course had a great looking kit when it was a double kick. Anyway, I'm going off tangent. Great drummer, great sound, sweet kit!
When I saw him play with The Who in 1989 at the old Sullivan Stadium in Foxboro, MA, he knocked me out. He's played with not only The Who and Pete Townshend but also David Gilmour, Mike Rutherford of Genesis (on Smallcreep's Day, drumming is phenomenal on the album, I have Smallcreep's Suite up), Judas Priest on Sin After Sin in 1977 and Toto amongst many others.
virgil donati, theres a video of him playing a paradiddle with his left leg and hand and a double paradiddle with his right hand and leg, or a paradiddlediddle...something like that :)
Check out Chris Brien, He's had quite a few reviews in Modern Drummer magazine and has totally insane independence. Thomas Lang said in a interview in Drumscene magazine (Aus)that Chris Brien is one of his biggest influences.
Chris Brien uses at least 10 pedals on his set up.
I don't think this is a solo. I think he's working out, like with his cymbal hits combined with the double taps on the bass. He's doing certain patterns over and over on different sound sources. This is just a practice session! Amazing. I wish mine sounded like this. LOL.
I have seen this solo a 1000 times and it never gets old.Simon really shows what he can do in this Studio drum solo. The are parts in this I cant even believe!Simon is amazing but Too bad you didnt post the whole solo.
It really doesn't matter how old that take is. It simply lay it down that Toto did the right thing after the great Porcaro past away. Notest how well Simon's snare cuts through.

Something disturbs me about the way his cymbal stands make a death head X cross over his drum kit.
Why did he have to set it up like that?
That's strange. His drums sound weird.
Hows come his hair is all frilly and stuff?
I thought he was a tough heavy medal drummer. He's doing doink doink tom tom stuff.
It's all doinky sounding: Toink. Doink. Choink.
Stop the percussive demagoguery.
He's pretty good at drums. Things are OK in drum land. Where did he train?

Simon Phillips is one of the few who plays 'open'. Therefore, he can put his hihat really low, almost in level with the snare.
That's why you can't see it.
Note that the hihat is still next to the snare. =)
