This is bullshit, there's no direct proof of video game addiction, and all that "bright colors make the playing rewarding to the brain" is just ridiculous. It's not the games that are addictive, but the people just not willing enough to take care of their social lives. Adults who claim gamers have no social lives and shit when they know nothing about it, as gamers are mostly playing TOGETHER, communicating through skype, gathering friends who are just interested in the same things as you are.
Yeah video games can be addictive...but so is freaking shopping for clothes at the mall for many people. Really? I bet this woman might overlook that though. She ma do it herself but video games, dear lord no.

If someone is addicted to ,say, soccer, everyone will be all "Good, good. Soccer's awesome." But the first time someone sits in front of a Tv screen for a few hours it's somehow "Woah, we have a problem here."
@SeeingThings123 Soccer gives you exercise it's good for your heart, metabolism, exposure the sun which provides vitamin D, also gives you a great cardiovascular work out. What I'm saying is that while video game addictions are extremely egregious, there are bigger issues though. Give the kids who have problems help, but don't make such a big deal out of it. I know that there has to be bigger issues than this. Not many kids are addicted to video games to this extent, but some do spend shocking numbers of hours on them (but that's not really an addiction). I like video games a lot, but I am far from addicted. I have a life.

I came back here just to say one more thing, I'm almost positive I have seen a show, where military / air force pilots have stated they fly planes in video game sims for very long amounts of time. The point being, in real life those pilots are made to fly 40 hour missions non stop no sleep, and could easily do 60 hour runs. So as for a video games killing you from sleep deprivation I would say you need to be in the 80-100 hours awake mark, and I bet you still fall asleep and don't die.

Gamers are elite, simple as that. Game are full of objectives, goals, and accomplishments to achieve, puzzles to solve, stories to read, and so many other things. Beating an RPG game probably involves more reading and critical thinking then these kids would ever use in school where the reward they get is a meaningless letter grade for reading a stupid book they have no interest in. Video games help expand your imagination, on an extreme scale. They are not addictive if you have a strong will. Kids should be shown other hobbies as well, instead of their parents just dumping TV and video games on them to keep them busy. For example kids, learn how to be really good at math at a young age, you'll be much happier later. Just watch yourself with how much time you spend on recreation, too much of a good thing is a bad thing.
I find video games addicting because it gives me a goal, although admittedly a very unproductive one. I think a big aspect of it is that it stimulates the imagination and the need to do something more exciting rather than the mundane everyday activities. Some people would rather win imaginary wars, slay imaginary dragons and rob imaginary men as opposed to buying nice clothes and buying nice cars and other physical things. Physical vs mental. It isn't an addiction unless it interferes with someones life. Sure, I like to play video games, in fact I love it, and I can play for 5+ hours a day if I wanted to (I've gone up to 12 hours straight playing).
But to say I'm an addict is totally wrong. I go to college, I have friends I talk to everyday, I go to the gym for a total of 6-7 hours a week, I play football (soccer), I walk a lot. A lot more people have died from alcohol & drugs than gaming....
It's probably OK when you are as young as you are (I assume you are college age). I think when you have kids and a job though, it might be harder. If you are working, or have your own business, and have kids with all that entails, it probably will detract from your work or family if you play video games 5 hours a day. But a single person in college getting everything done like you, doesn't seem like a problem.

I'm at an age where I'm not too young to get addicted (you can get addicted, but for some reason, younger children tend to get addicted more), but I don't have a job or family commitments either. It just blends in well with everything I do and compliments my life. Maybe in the future I'll have to watch out for what you said.

Video games are fun, period. If I have nothing planned or home alone I sit and play for hours. I still eat, take breaks, use the bathroom. If you don't take breaks a person can get 3D Sickness. I had heard of 3D Sickness but thought people were making it up until I got it. I literally had to go to bed, I ran a fever, I was sick to my stomach, I was dizzy. I suffer from migraine headaches and this was almost as bad. I do think people make a bigger deal out of time spent on video games.

@Braveshockey14 i feel you man. it's probably one of my favorite things to do when i literally have nothing else to do or im recovering from a workout at the gym. i think video games are good for athletes between training to keep the body relaxed and keep the brain stimulated to also help with school work. idk that is just my take.

It isn't an addiction unless it interferes with someones life. Sure, I like to play video games, in fact I love it, and I can play for 5+ hours a day if I wanted to (I've gone up to 12 hours straight playing).
But to say I'm an addict is totally wrong. I go to college, I have friends I talk to everyday, I go to the gym for a total of 6-7 hours a week, I play football (soccer), I walk a lot. A lot more people have died from alcohol & drugs than gaming....

It's probably OK when you are as young as you are (I assume you are college age). I think when you have kids and a job though, it might be harder. If you are working, or have your own business, and have kids with all that entails, it probably will detract from your work or family if you play video games 5 hours a day. But a single person in college getting everything done like you, doesn't seem like a problem.

@onepotatolawyer1 - Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm at an age where I'm not too young to get addicted (you can get addicted, but for some reason, younger children tend to get addicted more), but I don't have a job or family commitments either. It just blends in well with everything I do and compliments my life. Maybe in the future I'll have to watch out for what you said.

Video games are fun, period. If I have nothing planned or home alone I sit and play for hours. I still eat, take breaks, use the bathroom. If you don't take breaks a person can get 3D Sickness. I had heard of 3D Sickness but thought people were making it up until I got it. I literally had to go to bed, I ran a fever, I was sick to my stomach, I was dizzy. I suffer from migraine headaches and this was almost as bad. I do think people make a bigger deal out of time spent on video games.
