  • Also, I hiked to Latir Lakes in the Latir wilderness with scouts in the mid 80s and have wanted to return there. Have you ever packed there in N. NM.

  • @dnvnmrgn The Latir Wilderness is beautiful! I have backpacked in there several years ago up to a nice chain of small lakes. I took some photos of the area but this was before I started doing YouTube videos so It's definately a place I will go back to and this time I will film the adventure and share it with you guys. Might be a great trip for 2012.

  • Awesome video of the San Juans! I was in Taos over the 4th and we went and fished the Conejos around Mogote and absolutely love this area. My parents always took me to fish the Rio around S. Fork and Creede when I was growing up. I've been wanting to do some back country fly-fishing for a while and this looks to be a very kick a** place to do this. Where do you access thre trail head from exactly?

  • @dnvnmrgn Thanks for watching and commenting! I used to go fishing with my grandparents in these same places you mentioned. S. Fork, Creede, and Del Norte are great places to go fishing in the R. Grande. There is only one way that I know of how to access the Three Forks area:

From Antonito, go West on CO Hwy 17 for 22 miles to Horca.

Turn right on Forest Service Road 250 - follow FR 250 for 23 miles to Platoro. (all dirt rd.)

Then another 4 miles on FR 250 to dead end at the Three Forks T.H.

  • THIS ROCKS!! I love ur videos. & the music u use just goes so well w ur video style. It's both beautiful & playful. This country looks familiar. I'm missing getting out to many places as we have had the worst fire in history in our area. Dang!! All trails have been closed. Hope to get rain so they will open again. My feet are getting itchy to do a barefoot hike!! LOL! :) Thank you for a stupendous video!! You really do a great job. I smile all the way through your videos; they are SO COOL!! :)

  • What is this song? please

  • @MobFrenziedHomicide The music is as follows (in order of play):

"High On A Mountain" by Jackass Flats - Live @ The Jewish Mother 11-16-07

    "Tolen" by Jean Michel Cazoria

"Tell It To The Banjo" by Angel Ruiz

  • Good info. Thanks, Billy Bob.

  • Were there many horsepackers out at the time that you visited? Did you adjust quickly to the altitude on Day 1 and the following days? Very nice video; you're a Billy Bob Thorton look-a-like!

  • @JD03ish Thanks for watching! We saw 1 group of people who were using pack mules to get to Blue Lake. I aclimate to elevation very quickly as I live at 5,000 FT and often go hiking in elevations between 8,000 FT and 11,000 FT. I would camp at the Platoro Reservoir Campground for 1 night before hiking into the wilderness to aclimate properly. I appreciate the Billy Bob Thorton compairison too... thats awesome! :-D

  • What a wonderful place! Thank you for sharing it.

  • @athieron Thanks for watching! It's a wonderful place indeed!

  • Wonderful!!! SO BEAUTIFUL! I am going to HAVE to try this one sometime. It is gorgeous. Thank you for taking the time to film and share with us. :) :)

  • @RainforestRobin Thank you for watching Robin! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I love filming my outdoor adventures in the wilderness and sharing it with people like you who can truly appreciate it for what it is. The South San Juan wilderness is indeed a very special wilderness area. It's one of my top 3 backpacking trips of all time! The best time to hike here is from mid to late June, all the way to mid to late September. Any earlier or later and you will need snow treking equipment.

  • The total milage from the trailhead, up to Glacerial Lake and to Conejos Peak, and back down to the trailhead was about 22 miles. The trip can be done in 3 days but it's better to do a 4 day to really enjoy it. We did this in 5 days as we factored in a layover day at Blue Lake to do some fishing and to extend the stay... I did'nt want to leave! The road to the trailhead is in great shape and any passenger car can get there. The description area on my vid has a d-loadable topo map of the area.

  • Very cool, what was the round trip total? This place seems magical and Its looks to be a place I have to hike!

  • Cant get over how nice it is out there looks like this trail is lightly traveled .

Would you consider it a must hike or are there other hikes that are more dramatic.

  • @ihikearoundcom

Honestly, this was one of the best hikes I have ever taken! The entire place is amazing! The hike I would say is moderate and The Continential Divide Trail runs close to Blue Lake. The journey from Blue lake to Glacerial Lake was epic and mind blowing! The trail is lightly used but visible enough to see it the whole way up and back. I was going to hike it again several weeks ago but bad weather shut me down. I ended up going to the Pecos Wilderness.. video to come soon! :)

  • Absolutely great scenes. Loved the lightning strikes, the cloud movement, the fishing and all the in-progress hiking. Great video. I'm going to have favorite this one. Thanks for sharing.

  • Enjoyed your video...it helped me make plans to visit the Blue Lake area of the South San Juans this summer. Great post!

  • @4doctorjohn

Thanks for your comment and for watching!! Enjoy your trip to Blue Lake!

  • You should do a video of what you carried on that trip and the backpack you carried.

  • This was an inspiring video to watch. Thanks!

  • That looks like a great vacation. Nice photos too.

  • Thank you for watching and thanks for your comment! This was one of my very best backpacking trips of all time!

  • What a great video! I do have a quick q for you - is this an area where permits for overnight backpacking is required or do you just follow general wilderness regulations (i.e. 200'+ from water sources/trails, hanging food in forested sections/bear canister, etc.)?

  • Thanks for watching! You DO NOT need a permit. (just ur fishing license if you plan to fish). Just follow the normal wilderness regulations and as you mentioned, camp at least 200 FT from Blue Lake as it is well posted when you get there. Bear bags are needed! I have not encountered any bear while backpacking here, but this area is bear country and it would be wise. The dirt road all the way to the trailhead is in good shape and a normal car will make it to the trailhead parking lot.

  • Thanks for your very prompt response. I do have a rather small passenger car and your comment re same is very helpful - thank you! I'd probably use a canister since my plan would be to pitch camp somewhere well above timberline, if possible. Have done several overnights to Square Top Lake in the Mt. Evans Wilderness and the only critter I had to deal with was a nosey little pika! :)

  • We did the backpack trip to Blue Lake and back in 2008. It's a pretty lake, and only uphill one way! I'd been there about 15 years prior, so didn't remember too much about it, as I was on a horse, getting there from another direction. The lake looks the same though, (thank God). Glad to be in the solitude and wilderness. Congrats on the nice video.

  • Thanks for watching! I appreciate your comment!

  • wow! Great video, I've never been to Colorado, but it looks absolutely stunning!

  • Thank you for viewing my video and for the awesome comment! If you ever get the chance to visit colorado, I recommend Southern Colorado!

  • No problem :o). Also, how far was it from the trailhead to blue lake? Thanks for posting!

  • It was roughly 5.5 miles from the trailhead to Blue Lake.

  • cool, thank you!

  • All the time that image is zoomed the focus goes out... It happen allways?

  • CrazyTaileZ - Could you please help me identify the flowers in your video? The pink flowers at 5:50, the purple(or blue?) flower at 5:58 and the yellow flower at 8:25. Also, were they abundant? Reason for asking is cuz I'd like to up there as well.

  • Ok, the pink flower at 5:50 is called "Elephants Head" (pedicularis groenlandica). Thr blue/purple flowwer at 5:58 is called "Blue Flax" (linaceae) and the yellow flower at 8:26 is called Alpine Avens (acomastylis rossii turbinata)! The wildflowers are abundant here in the early summer but when I hiked in late August, there were not as many.

  • Thanks, I appreciate it. And thanks for the quick response too.

  • Awesome country! Glad this trip was much better then your previous trip that was washed out by the snow storm in early summer late spring.

Got to love the dog taking his own backpack! Way cool.

Thanks for sharing your adventure to the Southern Colorado Mtns. South San Juan is awesome. . . .

  • Beautiful, thanks.

I was in the Weminuche and South San Juan (Quartz Lake) in September.

The South San Juan has thus far been spared the massive beetle die off hitting the Weminuche (80% dead standing at Cimmarona).

I will be back in June- I'll spend more time in South San Juan this time.

  • Incredible footage! Thanks for sharing.

  • say did you ever try the altiods stove ?
