For example, on Amazon I can shop all I want without giving them any information...but it I want my cart to be held for me or to start a wish list, then I have to give some information. That is a benefit that I am willing to share my information for.
Pop up box or just a spot on the page, I don't sign up on anyone's site until I know there is something in it for me. Just getting updates from the page doesn't entice me to sign up. I can check back if I feel like there is relavance. I get hit with emails from everywhere and I try to limit that. If the company offers something extra that requires me to "sign in," then I will give the information. (cont on next comment)
