this man Duran is poetry in motion! always in position to deliver a KO; never any unecessary or wasted movements. Reminiscent of a young Ezzard Charles at Light-Heavy.
"Chavez vs Duran...lol in their prime, Duran knocks Chavez out with 5 rounds... no doubt about it"? how the fuck do you not have any doubts about it, there is one very important thing I've learned about Boxing, and that is ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN, so this "no doubt it" thing, is idiotic, but dont get me wrong, i would assume Duran wins by UD prime for prime at 135, also Chavez was never KOd ever, of coarse he never fought someone like Duran, but that goes both ways.
wouldn't you say: a boxers chin is among the things that leave you last? meaning: if you got it, you got! if you don't? you don't! look what happened to Chavez when knocked down by Randall; he got seriously rubbery legged and back-peddled severely. Now you know Randall is NO Duran! How about Duran at 37 taking power shots from a monster in Barkley for 12rds at 160, then dropping him en route to a scintillating victory. Julio at roughly the same age got slaughtered by Tszyu at 140?
thats what makes Duran a great fighter, great longevity, and great ability to jump divisions and be effective, i am in no way saying Chavez is greater than Duran, Duran accomplished far more than Chavez, Resume wise, Duran fought the better opponents, he would probably be able to accomplish more if he was more disciplined, but I'm talking Prime 4 Prime at 135, Chavez would probably finish the fight, but Duran would probably take the win.
AHA! so we agree on a Duran victory; I find your "probably" a bit troubling. LOL
and I assure you I'm a boxing fan! but it's hard not to be a boxer fan(as you say) when were talking about 1of the Greatest: Roberto Duran.
yes it was me who said that; if it appears a tad ignorant? sorry, then so be it. Maybe it was a bit of an harsh indictment? but in all honesty I just don't see Chavez defeating or being better than some of the other all-time Great Lightweights or even a few Featherweights.
if Randall made him rubbery legged; what do you think Roberto would of done to him? Triple6 just observe the frequency in which Julio was hit in fights vs: Taylor, LaPorte etc. now do you honestly believe he'd be standing after those punches from Duran? don't lie to yourself! Chavez was good; but Duran was an entirely different specimen! he more than proved that throughout his career. The never KO'd? that's true(somewhat)? but your only as good as your competition.
funny how the "haters" talk about Duran as if he was just another Fighters and the fanatics call others greats "at best valiant fighters" ha!.
hey i've already told you Duran would win Prime 4 Prime, i don't see a KO, my opinion wont change, i've seen Duran's best and Chavez's best, and what i see in a p4p, fights is a 11-4 for Duran.
Duran kicks his ass in any weight class! and I mean BAD! it's just plain to see. Like I've already mentioned: if Chavez is getting severely beaten by Tszyu at 140? or even back-peddling & retreating vs Randall? even their rematch with Chavez winning on points after a clash of heads was a JOKE! I suppose were all entitled to an opinion? hope I'm not coming off as a Chavez "hater"? which I'm NOT! HATE implies passion; some unfortunately Chavez leaves me without.
I can see the wonderful fantasies Rojas would indulge himself in as a new world champion beating Duran. No doubt he had wet dreams in the still of the night of fearlessly fronting up to Duran and flooring him with a glorious right hand and walking with his self belief enhanced
To be serious for a moment, it's good to see Duran dealing with mediocrity the way it should be dealt with. I bet those sweet dreams were replaced with nightmares the moment Rojas kissed the canvas
Also, it had taken WBC champ Guts Suzuzuki 14 rounds to stop Rojas. & Duran also KOd Suzuki in, I think, 10. Duran cleaned up on the whole division. Soon no one wanted to fight him.
I remember this fight, it was a prelim for one of George Foremans post Ali fights, I forget which. Duran was just becoming known to most fight fans, what a killer he was at Lightweight! The most exciting fighter to watch for me, I really liked him.
Duran in his prime in the 70s would have destroyed all the guys mentioned on here....get serious folks this guy was an animal and he just wore everybody out. Chavez vs Duran...lol in their prime, Duran knocks Chavez out with 5 rounds... no doubt about it
Duran brakes him down easy. Chavez was ana amazing fighter, but he had limitations. Duran virtually didn't. Chavez was tough, but so were guys like DeJesus and Buchanan, and they actually made Duran come after them.
Chavez always reminded me of Pipino Cuevas, & I'm sure Chavez would be honered by that, Cuevas was godlike in Mexico. But Cuevas didnt have Durans ability, and few did, if any
Nobody breaks down Chavez easy, and Duran was limited as well, just a bit more versatile than Chavez. Chavez's stalking style was probably actually better against movers than Duran's was. In a head to head matchup though, as good as Chavez was(and at his best, the Rosario fight, he was fantastic), Duran was just a tad more versatile and skilled. In a very good fight, Duran outdoes Chavez.
Duran was too kinetic & heavy handed for Chavez. To Duran opponents must've appeared to fight in slow-motion. With footwork and draining punches, Chavez was very good at breaking down movers. But to say he was better than Duran is excessive. Look at Duran's 2nd/3rd fights w/ DeJesus.
Duran wasn't just "a bit more versatile" he was light years ahead of Chavez. Superior punching power, excellent footwork, iron chin. The greatest lightweight in history, and 1 of the 5 greatest P4P.
What can you really say about Chavez? struggles against boxers, dubious competition, static, predictable, at best he was a valiant fighter.
Buchanan, Ortiz, Arguello, DeJesus, Lampkin would of all beaten him. When was he ever effective against good, taller fighters?
LMAO! The first 3 have good chances at beating him, Arguello moreso at 130, but definitely not Lampkin, and probably not De Jesus. You underrate Chavez to a much more absurd extent than anyone overrates him.
"light years ahead of Chavez"? you people talk about chavez as if he was a bum!!!, Chavez was another GREAT fighter, get that correct, Duran might have been the superior over all fighter but, there is no way Duran was "light yeas ahead" of Chavez, Duran is "light yeas ahead" of fighters like David Diaz, Michael Katsidis. NOT Chavez!,
"at best he was a valiant fighter"??? Please learn your boxing, you are seriously underrating Chavez.
Someone of great repute on many boxing fora recently suggested people in time will start calling Duran history's best P4P because the stigma of quiting (in the ring) won't be as grave and they'll focus more on his Lw fights, where he is the best fighter to be caught on tape. I dunno, maybe they'll dig up some footage of SRR, Greb or Jofre in the mean time and that'll throw things off too, but what we have of Duran against Palomino and DeJesus 3 is unmatchable.
Yeah, I wish the Palimino fight was on youtube. I remember Angelo Dundee & Gil Clancy called DeJesus 3 together. The tape of that fight is as good for their analysis of Duran as it is for the fight itself almost.
Awesome fighter, best ever at lightweight, stepped up through the divisions and fought above his true weight, and still held his own!
Ali used to be ny favourite fighter until I watched Duran fight Iran "the blade" Barkley. I thought he had next to no chance after what Barkley had been doing...never under esrtimate a true champion, and in Durans case..a champion in condition
To bad he never fought Mosley!?! Why Mosley? Whitaker I can agree with, however. Even more than the other top Lw's I think Pernell Whitaker would challenge Duran because of his style. Duran's defense would make Williams look wild and Duran would shred him up on the inside; Armstrong would be right there in the trenches w/ Duran and again Duran's hard to hit, even up close; Benny Leonard he engages Duran on all Duran's strong points.
That is probably true. Ray Arcel, who trained both Roberto & Benny, said Benny was the best Lightweight ever. But Arcel & Benny were best friends also. Ray Arcel! Another legend in Boxing history. He came out of retirement after seeing Duran fight, said he thought the sport was dying till he saw him. Duran was old school!
Duran was such a great fighter. He had his lightweight career in the 70s,, and then stepped up and fought even greater fighters fighting the legends of the 80s-Leonard, Benitez, Hearns and Hagler. And he even fought other hall of fame fighters like Barkley and Cuevez. His lightweight reign was legendary. Too bad he never fought a Pernell Whitaker or Mosley.
Classic Duran.
