I'll never forget the first time I heard this song, it was 46 years ago this month at a little Baptist Church in Blackberry , Ky and it was sung for my grandmother Dixie Williams Stafford's funeral. I don't think there was a dry eye in the church.
I love it when song by an elderly choir, rather than a solo :) It was song at a funeral I went to last week, and it was so applicable. The preacher had to pause the service and ask everyone to stand and it, it'll like it gave up hope even in the midst of our mourning :)
what a blessing Papa spears was. He raise wonderful Godly children. You can see and feel the compassion thru his music. I'm sure he in Jesus choir waiting for the rest of us. When I see him and his wife singing it put a smile on me and makes me remember my grandparents and that make me so happy. Thanks for sharing this vidieo with us. My parents sang in a quartet when I was a young man. I would love to have my dad's singing preserved on videotape (or any kind of audio) to be able to see or listen to now that he is with his Savior. The Speers are so blessed to have these wonderful memories. Seeing this video made me think of my dad and brought several tears to my eyes.
bakogoofball, I sure know where you are coming from. I have some tapes my dad recorded, I had been told they were gone..most is recorded artists, however, one tape has him telling stories. I love that I can still hear my dad's voice again.
i was just setting at my computer and i found this video and it reminded me that after its all done we win. I love the singing it reminds of how simple god really wants things great song great singer's.
true born again ,,,we still have trails and troubles,,,remember me when you pray. i have driffted and know because without he's hand it so hard.i have anger and other problems ...the lord knows my heart i'm glad he knows the intent of it ....you have to be born again...
As much as I love the talent in today's generation, there will never be groups like the Speers, the Statesmen and others... and this song ... WOW takes me back with a lot of memories singing around an old upright piano after church on Sunday night.
@Fugate171 Hi, you may not remember leaving this post for the Speers but you are so right. The best memories I have is of singing hymns in that old Baptist church in a tiny town in Michigan. There is nothing that can recreate these old times other than our memories. And memories are something this old world cannot take from us.
I've not heard of the people in question, but they must have been very special to inspire such wonderful singing, most uplifting. I decided to learn this and will play it at my folk club tonight
Thank you for posting this. I truly got a blessing watching this..One of my favorite songs and watching it sang like it should be sang by one the best just absolutely brought the hand of God down upon me and I just got chills up and down me and cried. Glory to GOD!
Rev. J.C. moore was my mothers uncle by marriage. We have sang this song many times over the yrs and it always has a way of bringing tears to my eyes and joy to my heart. He also wrote over 100 more songs but none have become as popular as Never Grow OLd.
I can't watch or listen to 'dad' Spear sing this song without weeping. Mind you I'm 6'4" 245 pounds , now 57 y/o and not one to get to emotional. But 'dad' Spear reminds me so much of my own dad who passed away this year at 80 y/o. I know that they are both 'in a land where we'll never grow old'. Thanks so much for post this video.
i love songs that make me cry ,they bring us closer to reality, too bad technology made them almost extinct, somewhere hiden by times and rouble they shine like diamonds!treasure hunters welcome...
Very sweet, humble and inspiring clip, this. An often-performed song by many southern artists. Perhaps my all-time favourate version is 1970's old-time banjer-picker George Pegram's true-to-spirit rendition of the song, appearing on Rounder Records' first-ever vinyl LP issue as a company (Rounder Records 0001). I'm going to have this song played as the eulogy at my mum's funeral (she's 76 y.o. and fit as a Mallee Bull, so here's hoping she'll be with us a for a good many years to come yet !!)
Beautiful video! I know I see London Parris and Big Chief on the right front and I think I see Jake(behind chief) James Blackwood(far left) and Denver Crumpler (middle back left)Jim Hill (far back left) Rosie(back right) Herman Harper(middle right) and could that be Jack Toney front left or is this video to early?
That is Big Chief without a doubt and I agree with you that is Jake. I recognize the other names, but I don't know if I would recognize them in their younger years.
Dad Speer is an exemplar of what old-time Southern Christianity is all about. He was Saved, filled with the Holy Ghost, and he positively radiated the Spirit. He knew that his home was waiting for him over on the other shore.
I used to listen to the Stanley Brothers sing this song. I love this performance by Dad Speer, thank you for posting this. Christian fellowship in song is the best
This has Blessed me. I've never heard of the Speaers Family singers before, but I'm glad I have now. I am a 42 year old man from Baltimore Md. Raised in a Black Baptist church. I remember all the old sacred hymns and gospel songs. This has always been one of my favorite. Pop Spears offering really moved me this morning. O how wonderful and how marvelous that the Gospel of Jesus Christ knows no Color, Race, nor Creed. Just them that love the Lord. Again thank you.
Being a Christian is like trying to be like Christ, He made us all, He knows no color. We are all His children, to be like Him is to embrace EVERYBODY regardless what race!!! WE must LOVE everybody!
I Thank you so much for posting this segment. I have sang this song for many years. I am a Baptist Minister and remember the Spear family. It is hard to find segments of Dad Spear and this one is my favorite. May the Lord bless you day in a special way
this is a great song and we use to sing this when i was a child in church with my dad as a minister and such a true life he lived for the lord.....sanangel
