The sad part of all this is that we can't get over a persons private choices. I enjoyed Freddie's music, I enjoyed his awesome voice, and his charisma. In The Great Pretender, about half-way, he throws his voice to the rafters and then hits a "woo-hoo" that nearly will stop your heart!
For me only the original Tony Williams of Platters fame was the only tenor I loved singing this song and then donkey years later I heard Freddy sing this and it blew my mind. So these are the only two tenors I like to hear singing this. :)

it's amazing he turned an elegant, soulful love song into a FM-style brazenly overblown (skillfully) playful ode to the FM persona: obsession, loneliness, passion, performer-audience dynamics all absent, not too apparent or murky in original. why? to show his critics he's no fool & knows perfectly well what he's doing? a man who can do "tasteful" songs in 70s can only possibly pursue "questionable taste" to find his artistic "niche", not b/c he's "camp/crass, just a showman"??

The sad part of all this is that we can't get over a persons private choices. I enjoyed Freddie's music, I enjoyed his awesome voice, and his charisma. What saddens me the most is that he is gone and people wanting to pick at his personal life. If we all looked in the mirror and were honest with ourselves, we would have a lot to hide. It sadeens my blackened and hard soul to hear folks speak ill of someone over personal choices. Last time I checked, he broke no laws..

Although he delivered most songs in the tenor range, his voice ranged from a pure crystalline coloratura soprano to a bass, nearly 4 full octaves! Montserrat Caballe, the opera singer, said "the difference between Freddie and almost all the other rock stars was that he was selling the voice". In The Great Pretender, about half-way, he throws his voice to the rafters and then hits a "woo-hoo" that nearly will stop your heart!

For me only the original Tony Williams of Platters fame was the only tenor I loved singing this song and then donkey years later I heard Freddy sing this and it blew my mind. So these are the only two tenors I like to hear singing this. :)

I still like music by Queen, but I recently bought a DVD of Queen, live, and watching Freddie simulate masturbation, on stage, in front of several tens of thousands of people, made me want to puke. Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar and his parents were both Persian. Parsi was their religion. His biography is on you tube in part 1 through part 12 and is very very interesting. Of course, I love Freddie as the best ever and like to know everything about such a great man and talent. He was a very nice and kind man. Although he died almost 20 years ago, I am still sad over his passing. Always will be, thank you for the music.
