Apple had a Unix long before Mac OS X - it was called A/UX and it ran both Unix and Mac System 7 applications!
It was pretty funny cuz it showed the usual Mac HD icon on the desktop, but it was named "/" and you couldn't rename it since it was the root directory. :)
It absolutely cracks me up to watch young linux geeks cry, "linux is not unix". It is totally different. Anyone who worked in the early 80's knows that Unix is the mother of all today's operating systems. Windows is an adopted bastard, as MS keeps adding unix-like commands.
I still have trouble using Unix with all the umasks and mode calculations I wish I was better with it, but from what I have done and used in the past in terms of Unix I have liked alot.
UNIX code rights were bought by Santa cruise operations.
A law suit over rights to the code was raging in the early nineties. BSD has been developing already for years. The code base was divided, and the BSD projects recoded everything that wasn't free already.
In 1991 Linux began as a homework assignment, and because of the legal turmoil of with Unix, developers favoured Linux as it was not encumbered by legal hurdles.
@frvfilms They were totally different projects and they had different philosophies. Read about the history of them and you'll understand. NetBSD didn't remain a single project and forked for religious reasons, FreeBSD and dragonfly forked for religious reasons, Linux +*BSD would probably end with the same result
Actually c# is a language designed by microsoft and it doesn't work on unix because it either runs on a windows-only virtual machine or compiles to win32 executables.
Its clear that you don't understand what unix is. Every OS system today is based on unix's paradigms. MacOs it self contains these paradigms and of course...it has unix(BSD) kernel.
Spydat: I was working on Minix and free UNIX before Linux was a twinkle in Linus Torvald's eye. I was working on open source code before the phrase "open source code" was coined. I was working on free software before Stallman wrote the GNU manifesto. I suspect there's code I wrote in all the operating systems you've ever worked on.
When I say "Linux is UNIX" that isn't because I'm deluded by Microsoft propoganda, it's because I have a *lot* of experience with it.
Clearly done by someone at USL, Novell, or SCO. No mention of 386BSD or Linux. 386BSD became FreeBSD and is now the core of Mac OS X, and of course Linux is everywhere... it's a shame what happened with SCO. But at least it's all still UNIX.
linux is NOT UNIX... it uses the most of POSIX standard and shares ideas from MINIX.. MINIX was inspired by UNIX, but that leaves linux very far from UNIX
386BSD was not that important, really... in fact, it was abandoned and only retaken later by the freeBSD and openBSD projects to use parts of it to replace AT&T's code after the litigation
Linux is UNIX. Its native APIs are UNIX APIs, top to bottom, and its such a completely different kernel than Minix that I'm stunned you'd suggest Linux shares ANYTHING with it!
FreeBSD and NetBSD started with the patch kits for 386BSD, and only made it a separate project after Jolitz went nuts. FreeBSD *2* took the 4.4BSD Lite code and replaced the 386BSD core with it, but NetBSD mainly replaced the legally compromised files and kept their existing kernel. OpenBSD was a NetBSD fork.
no, linux is not unix.. not at code level (which was written from scratch), not at a certified level (like mac os X)... everything up to it's development model is different from the unixes..
it's APIs are POSIX APIs, a defined standard.. not unix APIs.
I meant netBSD before, but sorry, you still fail to say at what point 386BSD was the most exciting thing in unix world
UNIX isn't the code. It's the API. It's not the POSIX API... POSIX is a latecomer, a superset of UNIX, an attempt to regulate something that was already happening. I thought it a silly idea when it was announced, and when Microsoft got FIPS-151 for PSXSS.EXE I knew I was right. UNIX is not defined by standards, or by code trees, but by a commitment to an API.
But even the linux kernel design is heinously conventional. It's much more like a traditional UNIX than OS X is.

There is a difference between Mac OS and Mac OS X.
The X is traditional UNIX. ;-).
If some retard says Mac OS is better than Unix. Then I would say: That's why It died for Unix :-).

The UNIX is the father of all of the systems. He is studied until today in the universities. With him the language came C#. Lamentable his vision.

Unix was only utilized by companyies.
Only sun supports unix with open solaris.
Apple doesn't support unix in any way.
SCO tried to make fast money with the unix rights.
UNIX is the OS victim number one.
But you are right. Many ideas in UNIX are great. They are switched to freeBSD, Linux, opensolaris, OS X ...

Its a fact of history, Linux derivid from Minix, and UNIX was brought to you by: AT&T, so lets not mix up the two, OK.
Having supported Linux, Solaris 9 and 10, FreeBSD, I have a little experience with this...
again, even the slogan of the open source movement is: GNU's not UNIX!!
watch Revolution OS, or read something other than microsoft propaganda...

Linux does not = UNIX
It is a UNIX like OS, and nothing more..
GNU's not UNIX
study the history, linux a different kernel.
Solaris
FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD are closer to being Unix than Linux will ever be...
MAC OS X is now certified as of 2007, do a search on google if you think I am making it up.
