the opening scenes are all live video shot by the early space shuttle missions.this was added in the early 80s looks more real then the orignal opening done in the 60s at culver city ca.desilu studios its almost hard to tell the difference sometimes .
The actual music version heard here was only used for the pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," and a couple more episodes after it. But not for the whole of the first season.
By the way, the pilot was not the first Star Trek episode ever aired. "The Man Trap " was.
@gadzooks004 I was going to make much the same comment myself. I remember the first season's version as sounding very "Wilbur Hatch" (Lucille Ball's musical director), whose orchestra recorded the theme, if I'm not mistaken. There was a little lilt (glissando, whatever) after the first few bars where you could almost see the clarinet player roll his eyeballs. This version sounds very much like the etherial electronic music from '50s SF films (Forbidden Planet, Day the Earth Stood Still, etc.).
@paullubliner Five episodes -- "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "Mudd's Women" "Charlie X" "The Man Trap" and "The Naked Time" -- used this theme for the opening and closing (the pilot of course had the opening without William Shatner's introduction).
soundmixer6393 I bring a message to all hate what YouTube is becoming. I hate the new appearance of the viewing system, I hate the reorientation of the video selection, comments, and description system, and most importantly, I hate the new rating system. I will spread this message everywhere until the designers of YouTube will concede with my complaints and restore it all.
@soundmixer6393 Why not try getting them to give the option of which interface it displays? That way whan you logged into your account it would switch back to the old version if you had that option selected. I'm not sure how they'd set it up but windows has the same options for the display, whether to use the vista or earlier versions. Just a suggestion, anyways.
I love Star Trek the Original Series. Yes the new movie is cool, I've seen it. I even have started collecting action figures from it, but it could never replace this. There is only one true Kirk and Spock and they are Shatner and Nimoy. Also I like the old Enterprise. The JJ Abrams Enterprise is cool but it's not the Enterprise I know.
I just saw the Star Trek movie. It's very nice to hear that Leonard Nimoy is doing the rhetoric on the closing. The difference between His and William Shatner's is that he said "it's ongoing mission" (for me, this is better to hear than the first one) and not "it's 5 year mission."
I've always preffered the tune to this opening, not the general star trek opening theme. This track, used for the 2nd pilot etc (but without the dialogue) will always be classic to me!
I always felt that TNG made better use of the intro than TOS did, even though they were pretty much the same aside from the theme songs. Maybe it's because I grew up watching TNG, but the way Patrick Stewart read the opening lines is quite stirring... just something about the emotion he managed to convey. William Shatner's reading seems corny in comparison.
"William Shatner's reading seems corny in comparison."
I never felt that way years ago or now. I still get a chill hearing it.
Of course, while Shatner is not really as bad of an actor as some have claimed him to be (I actually think he's good, especially in comedies), Stewart reading anything is just going to be more impressive.
*This* is the version which uses the ondes martenot electronic instrument. Whether it's a real singer has been disputed for a long time...this version seems to be the one that used the ondes martenot.
McCoy is asome. i love Star Trek so much, I'm writing my own book! All new ship and crew though. The crew is all kids. Star Trek had it all, Drama, Action, Mystery, humor...
I love Star Trek, in fact, I'm writing my own Star Trek Book!!!! It's a new ship though, all kids. Also, McCoy is SOOOOO much cooler than Spock. In my opinion. Kirk is asome too. Some of the epesiods say a lot, though. Star Trek had it all, Drama, Action, Humor... too bad Star Wars took over.
so...if you're serious...don't you need some kind of credentials to just write a book in a trademarked series? i mean, i could write a star trek book in which sulu bones spock in the pooper and spock says "this is not logical." it would be hilarious.
As long as Pocket Books publishes it, because they are the only ones with the permision to publish Star Trek books. And by the way, good luck on your book, if you decide to write it, as long as Bones plays a big part and Spock acutally admits he is Bones close friend. I'd love to read it.
Best TV series ever! I cannot believe NBC moved it to the Friday Night Death slot so early. If they had kept it for 2 more seasons, all men women and children would be hooked.
I remember watching the end credits of a "Star Trek" episode when I was 3 years old in 1968.
A few years later when it was running in syndication on WPIX (I originally thought the show was called "Star Tracks" :-), I started watching it and became an instant fan.
By the time the cartoon version of the program came out around 1974 (which was also terrific), TOS was my favorite, bar none. William Shatner was my favorite actor back then, too :-)
This isn't the original intro from the first season. This is from subsequent seasons when the show couldn't afford to hire the soprano to sing the part anymore.
you are totaly wrong, this is from early in the first season..the last season.3.also had the singer and blue credits..much better than here in the 1st season.
Sorry--but; I think I have it on you (yes, I was in front of the TV September 8, 1966 to watch the "Mantrap". When the ship, zooms towards the screen, it is the second and third sessions!
This version is either from "The Naked Time" or "Mudd's Women" from Season 1. They also used this opening music for "The Man Trap" and "Charlie X", but the opening dialogue by Shatner was spaced differently. And of course the opening minus Shatner's lines was used on the show's second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before".
I read that it's not an ondes martinot. But, it's been driving me crazy for years trying to find out what the instrument is.

I like this intro much more than it was in other seasons.
The reading has some more feeling in it, for example how he tells "strange".
Also, I like the more unvocal background music.

They seriously don't know how to make TV shows and intros anymore.
Especially that old school live band music.

The intro also changed the line "where no man has gone before" to "where no one has gone before.." Only a girl would catch that. haha
