had a samsung lcd screen that has a problem sometimes the screen would turn red & was still under best buys warranty so we took it in they hooked it up and it worked fine while we where there so they said we have to send it out for repair we can not replace it with a new one. so we did & of course thay said they could not find a problem but i knew that was not true so i took it home & hooked it up & the screen was red so wewhere mad did not take it back. guy on craigslist bought it & fixed it
@stereomann83 guy on craigslist said the capacitors were bad.
Do not buy Geek Squads Or bests buys Warranty unless the warranty states that you can get a new unit if the old one breaks thats the only wat i would buy one
all you idiots pissing yourselves over no static wrist straps need to learn how to ground yourself before working on computers. i work on my computer on the carpet, in my socks, and have never had any issues.
@WanderingArtificer <-- This person is right. I just had to install a new power supply which meant unplugging everything. I was on the carpet with it, just kept touching metal in the case every other minute to keep my self grounded. On top of the PSU I also put some new RAM sticks in and a new graphics card.
Computer has been working fine. But yeah, I think since they are "professionals" the wrist strap should be a requirement, like washing your hands after using the bathroom as an employee.
Right, I'm just saying there are other methods of mitigating ESD without using wrist straps... such as ankle straps, anti-static chairs with grounding chains, anti-static mats, humidity controls, etc. Wrist straps aren't the end-all be-all and just because you see someone working on electronics without a wrist strap doesn't mean that they are incompetent PC circuit-fryers.
You don't need wrist straps if you're only dealing PC boards and you handle them by their edges. However, there are times when they are required if you're handling static sensitive components like IC's that need to be soldered in. The smallest static shock can fry an IC chip.
Critique all you want, but you "pros" need to stop whining about wrist straps. Maybe back in the early 90's it was the cool thing to do, but there are LOTS of other ESD control methods. I've fixed over 8,000 computers without a wrist strap (OMG!) with no issues. Wrist straps are lame.
@alexanderblake hahahaha that occured to me aswell, but i think they have the things u wrap around your ankle, because those straps CAN get in the way... also you can tell alot of the people work on anti-static mats
This is bullshit. Half the computers that leave the service center it is broken. They have a quota that they have to hit and if they don't hit it they get written up or fired. GeekSquad only cares about money, not your computer, or their employees.
@alexanderblake all the products and employees are on grounded ESD-protective mats at all times while working on them. This discharges static prior to- and while they work on it.

@italy1677 ) I was being sarcastic Italy, I have spend many hours fixing systems that geek squad techs have messed up. Most of there techs are only A+ certified and have little or no experience repairing systems.

@TheConnorCarlstedt You can do it yourself. Just buy a phillips screwdriver for about $8 and open and toggle the insides. It's waaay better spending $8 as opposed to $100+

Obviously, the point of this video with its snazzy graphics, quick editing, and fast techno music is to sell you overpriced labor services that a local computer repair shop can do for a fraction of the cost. They charge $89 to replace a hard drive....I can LITERALLY do that with my eyes closed. Such scumbags.

@RyanRadiculous its 69$ for a full diagnostic if you don't have a service plan or if its not under warranty.
If its under a Geek Squad Service Plan the Diagnostic is covered at no additional cost. If hardware is at fault , the hardware repair would be free.
If you computer is heavily infected with spyware the quickest way to resolve the issue would be to restore the operating system. After diag and OS restore the price would be 199.
If you just want viruses removed, its the same price.
As expensive as it may be to use them, its like a auto mechanic, you could probably figure out how to change your rotors but many people just don't want to deal with it so they pay a mechanic 200 to do it for them. Its a business guys, they need to make a profit. Ive heard stories of ppl waiting 3 weeks a time for ones sent to service but again they process soooo many computers its a surprise it aint longer.
It took geek squad 10 buisness days to get my hard dive in, 5 buisness days to repair it and then it sat in "final inspection" for 2 days. Then it took 5 buisness days to reach my local best buy.
As a geeksquad agent, I can tell you, not only this is crazy, but you have no idea how much times we charge people for more services that they dont need, saying them they have virus or that hard drive is dead, etc. I don't have the choice to do that or not, I had big problems with my boss because I was honest with customers and they asked me to charge them "a re-installation (189$)" even if there is no reason to do this.
You just weren't very good at your job. I was an agent at 1798 and we did our job properly and our customers were happy. You also need to realize that it's a business not a charity.
i call bs they tried to charge my mom 200 something bucks for a reformat. luckily my sister told me and did it myself. they were really good at convincing her they were the ONLY ones that could do it.
Fuck these big chain companies. They destroy local economies and put many people out of work. Stop taking your broken stuff to places like these. Support your local family owned business.
It's funny that on a store level the focus of Geek Squad is to be a cashier and salesperson to sell the customer what they don't need. No matter how many old PC repairs there are, all they care about is selling useless services with new PCs and screw the Old repairs they can sit there for weeks. Sad thing.
So many ignorant posts on this video; people have no idea what they are talking about. There is no other company/store with in-store repair technicians that can pretty much handle any type of repair along the way.
GeekSquad can't handle shit. They'll hire anyone who's A+ Certified (means nothing) and isn't a felon. The kiddies that work there diagnose problems by plugging in a flash drive and running software that scans the machine for problems. If that can't find the problem, and it often can't, you're on your way to being drained of your money, because the techs will probably want to reformat your hard drive for hundreds of dollars or replace perfectly good parts.
Static electricity is much more common than you might think, and most of it is created by a process called triboelectrification, when two materials touch (your fingers and your PC keyboard, for example) and then move apart or rub.
Not a single person in this video had a static wrist strap, even the guy who was touching the RAM sticks. One of the components most susceptible to ESD
hahaha a static wrist strap .. dude i been repairing computers for atleast 10 years and have never used a wrist strap and i have never had static electricity fry anything ...i can see how much you know about computers they sure arent sensitive as people believe
t's entirely possible that you'll open up your PC, plug in an add-in card or some RAM, never have any sensation of static, and still have zapped the electronics. That's because the integrated circuits can be damaged or destroyed by static voltages as low as 400 volts.
Walk across that rug and touch a grounded metal object, and the voltage can be in the 10,000-to-12,000-volt range.
Maybe so, but it's an insurance policy, it reduces the risk no matter how small it may be. When working with this amount of electronics and all the moving about you'll be doing the static charges build up quite fast and you never know when it's fried something until you turn it on to check.
@ariscis you don't actually need them as long as your shoes are rubber and your not touching other metal in the computer or anything that will complete the circuit
I bet even the best tech with GeekSquad could not uninstall the dreaded >>>AVG 7.5 !! go on google and see! no one can get rid of it!! because of this i cannot install the new AVG 8.5 virus remover.
I work at Best Buy and Geek Squad charges exorbitant prices for work that should cost a fraction of the price. The worst part about it is that they use mafia-like persuasion techniques by threatening you about the perils of not having Geek Squad setup your computer, setup your home theatre, etc. I feel sorry for people who pay all that money for really nothing, but then again, that's how the service industry is.
@lionofthejungle that's why i started my own business by going to best buy and telling the people before they enter the store that i can fix their computer for a fraction of what their going to pay. lol
There's thousands Agents and with any major group of people, a good example would be police officers, there's going to be a few bad guys. It does not justify what those agents did but nothing starts off perfect, through these incidents issues are resolved so it doesn't happen again. I am an agent and i've been fixing computer since i was 15 and now i fix customers computer problems and make them happy :D
Geek Squad is a company like any other, there's always a range of experience in the employees, no matter how much you think you know there's always someone who will know more than you. Being an ass about it, well thats just uncalled for.
i just sent in a yamaha receiver and when describing the problems that were about a receiver he wrote down the product i was sending was speakers because it was in the same purchase on the same date, also the receiver was in a yamaha receiver factory box! i am waiting for it to get back. the level of incompetence at the geek squads is mind boggling. why wouldn't they send my factory warrantied receiver to the manufacturer? who knows how to fix it! if it weren't for shipping i would have donethat

DO they fix PS3s?
LcDT27 2 years ago
No. They can't even fix PCs, why would they be able to fix PS3s?
leimeisei909 2 years ago 2
It's funny that on a store level the focus of Geek Squad is to be a cashier and salesperson to sell the customer what they don't need. No matter how many old PC repairs there are, all they care about is selling useless services with new PCs and screw the Old repairs they can sit there for weeks. Sad thing.

So many ignorant posts on this video; people have no idea what they are talking about. There is no other company/store with in-store repair technicians that can pretty much handle any type of repair along the way.
rjsimons123 2 years ago
rjsimons123:
GeekSquad can't handle shit. They'll hire anyone who's A+ Certified (means nothing) and isn't a felon. The kiddies that work there diagnose problems by plugging in a flash drive and running software that scans the machine for problems. If that can't find the problem, and it often can't, you're on your way to being drained of your money, because the techs will probably want to reformat your hard drive for hundreds of dollars or replace perfectly good parts.

Static electricity is much more common than you might think, and most of it is created by a process called triboelectrification, when two materials touch (your fingers and your PC keyboard, for example) and then move apart or rub.
ariscis 2 years ago 2
Not a single person in this video had a static wrist strap, even the guy who was touching the RAM sticks. One of the components most susceptible to ESD
ariscis 2 years ago 5
hahaha a static wrist strap .. dude i been repairing computers for atleast 10 years and have never used a wrist strap and i have never had static electricity fry anything ...i can see how much you know about computers they sure arent sensitive as people believe
Fast06GTO 2 years ago
t's entirely possible that you'll open up your PC, plug in an add-in card or some RAM, never have any sensation of static, and still have zapped the electronics. That's because the integrated circuits can be damaged or destroyed by static voltages as low as 400 volts.
Walk across that rug and touch a grounded metal object, and the voltage can be in the 10,000-to-12,000-volt range.
ariscis 2 years ago 3
Maybe so, but it's an insurance policy, it reduces the risk no matter how small it may be. When working with this amount of electronics and all the moving about you'll be doing the static charges build up quite fast and you never know when it's fried something until you turn it on to check.
TalesOfWar 2 years ago
I really hope you aren't serious. I've fried a CPU before (my own) it really only takes a second and it fried.
darkwolf228 2 years ago 2
@ariscis you don't actually need them as long as your shoes are rubber and your not touching other metal in the computer or anything that will complete the circuit
jalacy93 1 year ago
@ariscis
You don't have to have one, I have fixed many man many computers including my own without one.
demon824 1 year ago
@ariscis they have anti-static mats on the tables

I work at Best Buy and Geek Squad charges exorbitant prices for work that should cost a fraction of the price. The worst part about it is that they use mafia-like persuasion techniques by threatening you about the perils of not having Geek Squad setup your computer, setup your home theatre, etc. I feel sorry for people who pay all that money for really nothing, but then again, that's how the service industry is.
lionofthejungle 2 years ago 4
