  • @MolesMalone yep

  • drop your guitar, go walk off a cliff....

  • @westongriffin That's rich coming from a kid who covers Blink 182 songs on acoustic. Get some skill, and shut the fuck up. :)

  • he looks high out of his mind. lol

  • his voice is very similar to butthead's voice

  • He looks high as fuck

  • weird ass right hand

  • How many of us just start improvising cause marty is too fast.

  • @blazeken1 me to XD

  • Damn! He is so good even without effects in his guitar. I like to be as good as him when playing clean.. It sounds so good and raw!

  • Thats the guitar that made him get a Kelly!

  • Marty>Hendrix. Period.

  • damn hes hella high!

  • @krayter Marty didn't do drugs. He's just boring.

  • @FlamingFretboard

so? drugs ruin a guys career. drugs are just stupid dude. yea, you get a buzz and get away from your stupid problems but they cause even more problems later in your life. its just stupid. and dont bring up weed, it WILL affect how you play. it slows you down ALLOT

  • 8:32 Nothing else matters!

  • Improv. God.

  • Marty Freidman: The origional Heavy Metal Hippie guitarist

  • @ILoveallguitars Tommy Iomi???

  • @ILoveallguitars lol marty hates hippies and hendrix

  • @rampage222555 marty hates hendrix???

  • @codebabe quoted from a UG interview

"I’d rather chew glass than listen to Hendrix."

"I never got Hendrix. When I think of Hendrix, an image comes in my mind about a lot of hippies rolling around in mud tripping on acid and it just doesn’t turn me on at all. And all that noise and feedback and I’m like, “Play in tune.”"

  • @rampage222555 hahaha wow. i understand half his argument, but then the other half is like wow Hendrix may have sucked live a lot because of the drugs but what about all those fantastic performances like "All Along the Watch Tower" and "Bold As Love" and "Little Wing" beautiful melodic playing.

  • @rampage222555 was that from friedman? linx plox

  • @xPurpleDrinkx9001 UG interviews section, search "marty friedman" and click on the one that says "nobody is more perfectionist" then ctrl + f and search in text "hendrix" to see his thoughts on him.

  • Was this before he was whit megadeath

  • @tmmellis yea i think so

  • @tmmellis yes, by about 4 years i think but i'm not positive.

  • what guitar is it?

  • @hk19950329

    Carvin V220

  • He has a simular right hand picking method as Zakk Wylde

  • @PIlotrcm yeah but zakks wrist is more far away from the guitar, martys wrist is resting on the guitar

  • what makes that exotic.? i guess its not.. try to pack al your thing in youtube..

  • Fucking idiots, youre comparing Mustaine to Friedman?? Mustaine is the most influencal metal guitar player and the god of metal. Probably the best rhythm guitarist out there and a shredder too. Sure Friedman is better soloing and writing solos but Mustaine wats him alive or anyone else when it comes to wirting music and music geniousity.

  • @alliswow Not really lol, Marty Friedman is alot better not just at soloing, but at composing, phrasing and it's not like mustaine wrote EVERY single thing when friedman was in the band besides his solos lol, friedman had a huge part in it, espicially rust in peace, you can just hear how thats martys album.

  • @TerrorizerGrindspeed Well Rust in Peaces alla riffs are written my Mustaine, some solos are Mustaines and of course some Friedmans. Dont get me wrong, Friedman is amazing and one of my fauvorite solo guitarists but Mustaine wrote lyrically and musically almost everything, some of it whne he was 18. Nobody wouldnt even know about Friedman if it wasnt for Mustaine. Friedman and his solos are mind blowing but overall...Mustaine owns everybody

  • @TerrorizerGrindspeed Rust in Peace was written quite a bit before Marty joined Megadeth. I've read many articles in magazines that discuss Marty coming in after it was finished. 'Polaris' was written before Dave joined Metallica. Marty is the better lead player and 'embellisher' but when it comes to writing songs without ANY lead playing in the mix, Dave wins hands down. Dave wrote the riffs and progressions that drove the songs. Marty enhanced them, but wasnt as involved in the writing.

  • @codebabe i think poland wrote a bunch of the solos or at least they used a lot of his solo'ing as a foundation since he recorded the original demo for RIP before he left the band.

  • @LegguhVids the demos sound nothing like marty's final leads. quite different. poland had solos written for those tunes, but theyre quite a bit different than marty's polaris was probably vaguely similar considering most of marty's licks in that song are pentatonic but the others, marty used his own licks relating to his exotic style. poland being a jazz fusion player doesn't use melodic or harmonic minor, or diminished.

  • @codebabe yea i never listened to the demo tapes, but just something i heard. i like mustaine, poland, friedman solos all for different reasons.

  • @LegguhVids yeah. what he might have meant was poland's ideas worked with the foundation of the song. marty is too much of an individual(leadwise) to take influence from another guy's parts. even listening to live recordings of in my darkest hour, his solos in there are way different than jeff young's.

  • @TerrorizerGrindspeed and phrasing is a term for lead playing, apart from composing. it has to do with decorating the piece that has already been written. If someone improvised a clarinet solo for a Mozart piece, they wouldn't take writing credit for it. I love Marty, but listen to the riffs under the leads on his Dragon's Kiss album and then listen to the riffs on the first 3 Megadeth albums before he joined, or even Endgame. It's plain to see Dave was better at riff creating aka, composer.

  • @codebabe ehhhh, I mean it just comes down to opinion really, I honestly dont think the other megadeth albums are special, I agree the riffs under dragon mistress are not super creative but I mean your solo album isn't about the riffs so you can't really blame him. Cacophony had some great riffs and songs besides the solos which all kicked ass though!

  • @TerrorizerGrindspeed that may be because you aren't a big thrash fan(i'm inferring) but almost any true lover of thrash or heavy metal in general would agree that Megadeth's first three albums were visionary important pieces of metal history. The riffing was absurdly unique for its time and Chris Poland is a genius guitarist in his own right. Marty made them that much better but I listen to Megadeth for the band, not just him. I guess it depends why you listen to Megadeth.

  • @TerrorizerGrindspeed I'm not saying Marty's solo riffs were bad I'm saying that Dave is a riff machine. I'm not taking credit from Marty. I'm just giving more to Dave. You may not be impressed by Mustaine(for what reason I dont know) but he's widely regarded as one of if not the best rhythm player in metal. As well Chris Poland and Gar Samuleson were not only monsters on their instruments but very original. Much stronger as a band than Cacophony, who in my opinion are generic in comparison.

  • You can buy this guitar now!! Check his facebook page!

  • Want him to marry me :)

  • Mustaine>musician than friedman

    friedman>soloer

  • due to his unconventional right hand placement he moves his arm a lot to compensate. You will see him kind of slap down on the strings for something that is a lot easier if he would just move his hand to where it's supposed to be. He also is seen pulling up on the strings with his upstroke which gives it a popping sound that although characteristic is a little annoying. He was clearly self taught but perhaps picked up some training later after he was stuck in this form.

  • Love Friedman. It amazes me though how terrible his form is and yet he still excels.

His right hand is way too far away from the bridge for a metal guitarist and he does a majorly rookie thing with tucking his pinky and YET it comes from out of nowhere and lands when he needs it. It defies conventional thinking and training and yet it clearly works for him. If you are a rookie guitarist please don't try to play like Marty, just take his concepts and run with them but leave his technique alone:)

  • hi i am marty friedman,i am REALlY HAPPY doin this hot licks vid.. :D

  • 0:33 ... valley of eternity :P

    Grande friedman!

  • 4:07, thats the exact bit of at the end of "Eleven Blue Egyptians".

  • Well, someone had a massive spliff before the cameras started rolling...:)

  • More like Friedman < ALL

  • @theultimatexperience you mean FRIEDMAN>ALL

  • @cnarro890 Shit... my bad! Friedman > ALL

  • @theultimatexperience yeah dude

  • Friedman> Hammet

    Mustaine=Hetfield

  • @hjkentproductions Agreed

  • Damn, he's giving me goosebumps.

  • "I'm really excited to be here" well he certainly looks excited lol

  • @Sirpwnalot4321

    he says happy

  • @Sirpwnalot4321 he said happy, not excited

  • don't forget Dragon's Kiss!

  • first fucking lesson where the guitar is just plugged straight into the amp with barely any effects

  • UNTIL BEGININ THE CLINIC HE WAS SMOKING MARIHUANA.....

  • Marty may not be the "most" technical lead player...but he is the best technical lead player imo. the guys playing does such justice to any chord progression.

  • He looks high lol .

  • "Let's think about the number 5"

It's like a way cooler version of Sesame Street @_@

  • you god of a man, i want your skills......

  • Marty+Jason+ Carvin Guitars= fakin best combination ever!

  • Gotta love the enthusiasm...

  • this is the stage where marty nerded his way trough his extrodrinarily skill :)

  • I've had this instructional video on VHS for years. It's one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen and it still gives me new ideas and creative playing. Totally underrated for its time.

  • nice .

  • Damn.. the first lick is hard... this is going to be a crazy lesson..

  • He sounds stoned in this video...haha

  • such a unique guitar player. I like how he gives an A chord to tune too.

  • I want his hair <3

  • @JoshyMyers

me too , I went from having a lot of hair to almost nothing at all XD. And I'm the same age as him.

  • @MrTokken88

his hair is godly, prehaps you dont have the "godliness" to posess it! :)

  • @JoshyMyers lol, I don't which is why I don't have his hair. main thing is he kicks ass.

  • HOLY SHIT!!! THE HAIR

  • Lol i stopped after the first example.

  • sooo...does he exspect people to be able to do any of this stiff? sighhh i wish i could be this good

  • It would be nice if youtube had a slow mo button

  • monotone? or even your stereotypical stoner guy from any given movie?

  • great tone ...which pick up is this one?

  • his hair looks like a mane , RAWR

  • Perminator!

  • his right hand is FUCKED!

  • yeah i like to play guitar like him ;)

Friedman & Becker = best duo ever. <--- yeah both of the is fucking awesome when together playing guitar ;)

  • my dream guitar, to bad they dont make them anymore

  • This guy is one of the gods when it come to playing guitar but I really dont understand his picking style , try it at home it is extremely hard and uncomfortable to do.

  • i love those carvins :]

  • epic as dude javier can play better tho

  • Best teacher ever.

  • Great lesson. I wish Marty was my teacher lol

  • he so high! hahaha marty rulz!

  • @watt3256 he does look/sound high! hahahahhaha

  • Your poodle uahsuahsuashash

  • @mikem376 HOW DOES HE SOUND LIKE A GAY? YOURE PROBABLY A GAY. FAGGOT.

  • Hahahaha nice caps. They don't add any emphasis by the wy. Epic fail. You're the fag for trying to prove something false.

  • @mikem376 Marty owns you and your guitarplaying so shut up, you type like someone who loves to suck dick while taking it up the arse.

  • I never said I was better at guitar hahaha you suck balls at reasoning.

    You are clearly retarded.

  • @mikem376 Your clearly a dick sucker.

  • You clearly can't grasp the fact that I only made a simple observation of one of the most amazing guitar players early in his career. Shut the fuck up.

  • @mikem376 GO FUCK YOURSELF CUNT-NUGGET.

  • @TheFigueroa007 Grow up

  • Amazing artist and amazing guitar player

  • for some reason i really like that guitar

  • aaaaa ahora marty esta cagado ..usa tacones y no se maricondas mas.. japon le cagado el cerebro

  • theres my poodle!

  • EL MAS MOSTRO!!!!

  • this guy is an artist

  • I think some people need to remember that music is a personal taste.

  • mustaine isnt half the guitar player marty is

  • 2:34 Pletty...pretty mella...pretty melodic...HUH !!! OMG, that cracks me up every time !!!

  • I think marty is such a genius, and i love his solos, but i dont think his a teacher, i also love Paul Gilbert, and I dont say Gilbert is better than marty, i think Paul is a teacher, take a look at his videos, there so easy to learn.

  • he sounds high, lol,

" try ta, try ta think of stuff on your own..."

    lol

  • To call him a genius would be to imply that he is human. He is beyond human.

  • I just hate these guys who say "this one is better than that" JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP AND ENJOY THE LESSON

  • And to think Dave Mustaine tries to claim credit for Marty's solos. LOL. What an idiot. Mustaine couldn't play, let alone imagine, Marty's creativity.

  • @CaptainFantastik1 So true. It pissed me off when Mustaine tried to claim credit for writing the melodic lines of Marty Friedman. Waaaaay out of his league

  • Marty was great in Megadeth. But his best days by far were in Cacophony. Friedman & Becker = best duo ever.

  • @zapz0rd It's a shame that most megadeth fans (posers) won't know who Cacophony is.

  • @dreaded666 - yeah man...Fucking legendary to those who no!!!

  • Friedman > Mustaine

  • How?!? They're fucking completely different. Mustaine rights amazing riffs and does great shredding solos, and Marty Friedman does great melodic solos, can shred good, etc. Fucking youtube faggots.

  • finaly ....you know whats up with music

    great shit dude

  • Actually Dave's solo's are not that great... they get predictable and sometimes a little boring as well.

Peace Sells had the best solo's, I think it was because he then worked with Chris Poland.

Marty on the other hand... destroys Mustaine technically and musically.

  • Well it depends on the solo really. For Dave's pure sped and shredding solos as seen in Holy Wars and the end of Five Magics, they use many of his signature moves as very fast speeds, and they do sound a bit repetitive, but are great in their own regard. I think that Marty is a much more melodic player in general, and his shredding solos still have great melody to them. HOWEVER, Dave's non-shredding solos are fantastic, in melody and creativity IMO. Kinda rambled a bit but yea, both are amazing.

  • @zapz0rd As a guitarist? No shit Sherlock. But singing over some of the rhythms is Megadeth take a LOT of talent

  • @zapz0rd friedman and mustaine are on two completely different plains, comparing them is just like comparing megadeth and metallica...you just cant do something like that or it will throw off the polarity of the earth and we'll all die(ive seen it happen...twice)

  • @zapz0rd Guitarist yea, but he didnt write all all megadeth songs. and besides i like daves singing.

  • @zapz0rd Mustaine isnt really a lead guitarrist by sure he can solo but hes better playing and singer

  • @zapz0rd That's why Mustaine choose him!

  • @zapz0rd No shit

  • @zapz0rd ...it doesn't mean much if you say it...Dave admitted it. XD XD

  • @zapz0rd thats kinda dumb to say dude, they're strengths aren't the same. marty composes beautiful lead work which dave cant do as well. dave composes beautiful rhythm parts and riffs...which marty cant do as well.

  • @zapz0rd no shit dude

  • @GTASSusp3ct

It's just going up and down a pentatonic scale with some sequencing. Yeah Kirk does that stuff a lot.

  • @GTASSusp3ct Kirk used that form of the Pentatonic a lot but it was almost always groups of 4 or triplets. Rarely, if ever, groups of 5 like Marty here.

  • agree, kirk doesnt phrase, he plays as many notes as he can randomly in a box of 5 notes.

  • @GTASSusp3ct yeah thats a very popular lick

  • Yes yes yes! This guy loves technique like I do hehe.

  • MOTHER OF GOD

  • i heard hangar 18 live with broderick and he nailed the solos right on the damn head. He was playing slightly faster but he did a damn fine job. Marty just added to the megadeth personality is why i think ppl like him more and the fact that he was with them for ten years

  • @DenseMetal

Yeah, I agree. Broderick is a damn good guitarist also.

I just wish Ellefson was still in the band.

  • and the fact he wrote most of the solos that are classified as the best of megadeth's time

  • Yeah other than Dave Mustaine Marty Friedman is my favourite Megadeth guitarist.

  • with Marty, Megadeth was unique. Hangar 18 is the best thrash solos tune

  • Yeah, it's a shame he left Megadeth but at least he's doing what he wants now. He lives in Japan and does all of that J-Rock crap it's sort of a shame.

  • Shame? J-Rock crap?? You're obviously not paying attention. Go watch some YouTubes from the Exhibit B dvd.

  • Call me old fashoined, i don't really care. But i liked it when Marty was in Megadeth. And i've seen some of the stuff, but it just doesn't seem like him though.

  • You're not old-fashioned. You just have tunnel vision. If you're appreciation of Marty Friedman is limited to his Megadeth years, then that makes you a Megadeth fan rather than a Marty Friedman fan. A great guitarist is a great guitarist, regardless of who he's onstage with. His pre- and post-Megadeth stuff, while different, is still him. And unlike Broderick, Marty can write. Which is why he's consistantly successful and has a loyal fan base.

  • He's a great guitarist. Absolutely amazing. But i'm just not used to the whole J-rock thing, looking at some of the stuff his new stuff isn't really J-Rock he still has that metal touch that a like.

  • Ain't meanin to bash ya bro. I'm just old ;-) and have been a fan of Marty since his Cacophony days with Jason Becker (you've heard of him, right?). Part of Marty's greatness (for me) is his versatility, so knowing about his musical history helps put it all in perspective.

  • Broderick cant write? listen jag panzer and you see he can write good songs too, both are good guitarists and songwriters.

  • I cant tell what the tab is, can anyone tell me. Please.

  • ya gotta give props to this man for doing the entire lesson video with a clean tone. the ideas come through SO much better for the student. Especially back then ... everybody was just drowning their sound with more and more and more distortion. and i'm sure today its even worse.

    Thanks Marty!!!!!

    Joey Lodes

  • Word.

  • Too good, so good

  • I bought this on VHS many, many years ago. It was awesome and really ahead of it's time.

  • Marty Friedman ,,, one the most unique guitarist of all time ... also one of the best ...
