@xPurpleDrinkx9001 UG interviews section, search "marty friedman" and click on the one that says "nobody is more perfectionist" then ctrl + f and search in text "hendrix" to see his thoughts on him.
Fucking idiots, youre comparing Mustaine to Friedman?? Mustaine is the most influencal metal guitar player and the god of metal. Probably the best rhythm guitarist out there and a shredder too. Sure Friedman is better soloing and writing solos but Mustaine wats him alive or anyone else when it comes to wirting music and music geniousity.
@alliswow Not really lol, Marty Friedman is alot better not just at soloing, but at composing, phrasing and it's not like mustaine wrote EVERY single thing when friedman was in the band besides his solos lol, friedman had a huge part in it, espicially rust in peace, you can just hear how thats martys album.
@TerrorizerGrindspeed Well Rust in Peaces alla riffs are written my Mustaine, some solos are Mustaines and of course some Friedmans. Dont get me wrong, Friedman is amazing and one of my fauvorite solo guitarists but Mustaine wrote lyrically and musically almost everything, some of it whne he was 18. Nobody wouldnt even know about Friedman if it wasnt for Mustaine. Friedman and his solos are mind blowing but overall...Mustaine owns everybody
@TerrorizerGrindspeed Rust in Peace was written quite a bit before Marty joined Megadeth. I've read many articles in magazines that discuss Marty coming in after it was finished. 'Polaris' was written before Dave joined Metallica. Marty is the better lead player and 'embellisher' but when it comes to writing songs without ANY lead playing in the mix, Dave wins hands down. Dave wrote the riffs and progressions that drove the songs. Marty enhanced them, but wasnt as involved in the writing.
@codebabe i think poland wrote a bunch of the solos or at least they used a lot of his solo'ing as a foundation since he recorded the original demo for RIP before he left the band.
@LegguhVids the demos sound nothing like marty's final leads. quite different. poland had solos written for those tunes, but theyre quite a bit different than marty's polaris was probably vaguely similar considering most of marty's licks in that song are pentatonic but the others, marty used his own licks relating to his exotic style. poland being a jazz fusion player doesn't use melodic or harmonic minor, or diminished.
@LegguhVids yeah. what he might have meant was poland's ideas worked with the foundation of the song. marty is too much of an individual(leadwise) to take influence from another guy's parts. even listening to live recordings of in my darkest hour, his solos in there are way different than jeff young's.
@TerrorizerGrindspeed and phrasing is a term for lead playing, apart from composing. it has to do with decorating the piece that has already been written. If someone improvised a clarinet solo for a Mozart piece, they wouldn't take writing credit for it. I love Marty, but listen to the riffs under the leads on his Dragon's Kiss album and then listen to the riffs on the first 3 Megadeth albums before he joined, or even Endgame. It's plain to see Dave was better at riff creating aka, composer.
@codebabe ehhhh, I mean it just comes down to opinion really, I honestly dont think the other megadeth albums are special, I agree the riffs under dragon mistress are not super creative but I mean your solo album isn't about the riffs so you can't really blame him. Cacophony had some great riffs and songs besides the solos which all kicked ass though!
@TerrorizerGrindspeed that may be because you aren't a big thrash fan(i'm inferring) but almost any true lover of thrash or heavy metal in general would agree that Megadeth's first three albums were visionary important pieces of metal history. The riffing was absurdly unique for its time and Chris Poland is a genius guitarist in his own right. Marty made them that much better but I listen to Megadeth for the band, not just him. I guess it depends why you listen to Megadeth.
@TerrorizerGrindspeed I'm not saying Marty's solo riffs were bad I'm saying that Dave is a riff machine. I'm not taking credit from Marty. I'm just giving more to Dave. You may not be impressed by Mustaine(for what reason I dont know) but he's widely regarded as one of if not the best rhythm player in metal. As well Chris Poland and Gar Samuleson were not only monsters on their instruments but very original. Much stronger as a band than Cacophony, who in my opinion are generic in comparison.
due to his unconventional right hand placement he moves his arm a lot to compensate. You will see him kind of slap down on the strings for something that is a lot easier if he would just move his hand to where it's supposed to be. He also is seen pulling up on the strings with his upstroke which gives it a popping sound that although characteristic is a little annoying. He was clearly self taught but perhaps picked up some training later after he was stuck in this form.
Love Friedman. It amazes me though how terrible his form is and yet he still excels.
His right hand is way too far away from the bridge for a metal guitarist and he does a majorly rookie thing with tucking his pinky and YET it comes from out of nowhere and lands when he needs it. It defies conventional thinking and training and yet it clearly works for him. If you are a rookie guitarist please don't try to play like Marty, just take his concepts and run with them but leave his technique alone:)
Marty may not be the "most" technical lead player...but he is the best technical lead player imo. the guys playing does such justice to any chord progression.
I've had this instructional video on VHS for years. It's one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen and it still gives me new ideas and creative playing. Totally underrated for its time.
This guy is one of the gods when it come to playing guitar but I really dont understand his picking style , try it at home it is extremely hard and uncomfortable to do.
You clearly can't grasp the fact that I only made a simple observation of one of the most amazing guitar players early in his career. Shut the fuck up.
I think marty is such a genius, and i love his solos, but i dont think his a teacher, i also love Paul Gilbert, and I dont say Gilbert is better than marty, i think Paul is a teacher, take a look at his videos, there so easy to learn.
And to think Dave Mustaine tries to claim credit for Marty's solos. LOL. What an idiot. Mustaine couldn't play, let alone imagine, Marty's creativity.
@CaptainFantastik1 So true. It pissed me off when Mustaine tried to claim credit for writing the melodic lines of Marty Friedman. Waaaaay out of his league

@zapz0rd thats kinda dumb to say dude, they're strengths aren't the same. marty composes beautiful lead work which dave cant do as well. dave composes beautiful rhythm parts and riffs...which marty cant do as well.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
5:35 That's something noticeable in many of Kirk Hammet's guitar solo's, Seek and Destroy and Four Horsemen, if I'm not mistaken, have some kinda phrase like that
@GTASSusp3ct Kirk used that form of the Pentatonic a lot but it was almost always groups of 4 or triplets. Rarely, if ever, groups of 5 like Marty here.
i heard hangar 18 live with broderick and he nailed the solos right on the damn head. He was playing slightly faster but he did a damn fine job. Marty just added to the megadeth personality is why i think ppl like him more and the fact that he was with them for ten years
Yeah, it's a shame he left Megadeth but at least he's doing what he wants now. He lives in Japan and does all of that J-Rock crap it's sort of a shame.
Call me old fashoined, i don't really care. But i liked it when Marty was in Megadeth. And i've seen some of the stuff, but it just doesn't seem like him though.
You're not old-fashioned. You just have tunnel vision. If you're appreciation of Marty Friedman is limited to his Megadeth years, then that makes you a Megadeth fan rather than a Marty Friedman fan. A great guitarist is a great guitarist, regardless of who he's onstage with. His pre- and post-Megadeth stuff, while different, is still him. And unlike Broderick, Marty can write. Which is why he's consistantly successful and has a loyal fan base.
He's a great guitarist. Absolutely amazing. But i'm just not used to the whole J-rock thing, looking at some of the stuff his new stuff isn't really J-Rock he still has that metal touch that a like.
Ain't meanin to bash ya bro. I'm just old ;-) and have been a fan of Marty since his Cacophony days with Jason Becker (you've heard of him, right?). Part of Marty's greatness (for me) is his versatility, so knowing about his musical history helps put it all in perspective.

@zapz0rd thats kinda dumb to say dude, they're strengths aren't the same. marty composes beautiful lead work which dave cant do as well. dave composes beautiful rhythm parts and riffs...which marty cant do as well.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
5:35 That's something noticeable in many of Kirk Hammet's guitar solo's, Seek and Destroy and Four Horsemen, if I'm not mistaken, have some kinda phrase like that
GTASSusp3ct 2 years ago
@GTASSusp3ct
It's just going up and down a pentatonic scale with some sequencing. Yeah Kirk does that stuff a lot.
ThisIsNotVincent 2 years ago 3
@GTASSusp3ct Kirk used that form of the Pentatonic a lot but it was almost always groups of 4 or triplets. Rarely, if ever, groups of 5 like Marty here.
jointz999 2 years ago 3
agree, kirk doesnt phrase, he plays as many notes as he can randomly in a box of 5 notes.

@GTASSusp3ct yeah thats a very popular lick

i heard hangar 18 live with broderick and he nailed the solos right on the damn head. He was playing slightly faster but he did a damn fine job. Marty just added to the megadeth personality is why i think ppl like him more and the fact that he was with them for ten years
DenseMetal 2 years ago
@DenseMetal
Yeah, I agree. Broderick is a damn good guitarist also.
I just wish Ellefson was still in the band.
007Mechanix 2 years ago 2
and the fact he wrote most of the solos that are classified as the best of megadeth's time
gh0stmasta 2 years ago
Yeah other than Dave Mustaine Marty Friedman is my favourite Megadeth guitarist.
SpicyDragoon 2 years ago 8
with Marty, Megadeth was unique. Hangar 18 is the best thrash solos tune
bled2004 2 years ago 4
Yeah, it's a shame he left Megadeth but at least he's doing what he wants now. He lives in Japan and does all of that J-Rock crap it's sort of a shame.
SpicyDragoon 2 years ago
Shame? J-Rock crap?? You're obviously not paying attention. Go watch some YouTubes from the Exhibit B dvd.

Call me old fashoined, i don't really care. But i liked it when Marty was in Megadeth. And i've seen some of the stuff, but it just doesn't seem like him though.
SpicyDragoon 2 years ago

Part of Marty's greatness (for me) is his versatility, so knowing about his musical history helps put it all in perspective.

ya gotta give props to this man for doing the entire lesson video with a clean tone. the ideas come through SO much better for the student. Especially back then ... everybody was just drowning their sound with more and more and more distortion. and i'm sure today its even worse.
Thanks Marty!!!!!
