I've used this service for about a year now... very handy on my cell phone and much cheaper. When it first started I would get an ad every 10th call or so, but now there are several short ads before you get your number. Still much cheaper than using the cell phone company's directory assistance! I love that I can be driving down the road and get a number lickety-split!

I remember when getting directory assistance was free for a local calling area. I also remember when pay phones had a phone book attached. Then again, I remember pay phones period.

I'll use it if needed, but I wonder what the "catch" is for the free service. Listening to an ad beforehand? I'm just guessing, but that's the most likely way of maintaining revenue. Glad that I know how to hum. :-)

With all due respect you can "prefer" anything you'd like of course. I have some useless land for sale, and I'll raise the price JUST 4 U. Kiddin'.

But I will seriously tell you that if you made 1000 information calls over a lifetime (which is nothing, except once a month!) at $2 each and that money was placed in a money market over 75 years it would amounts to more than $175,000. Think about it! And if you don't want to think, I'm posting it for others to think about. Have a good day.

I have used this service for ovr a year and been a MyPoints member for over 8. They both are great services. FREE411 has saved me a LOT of money. The voice response isn't the greatest, however, once you get to an actual person, they are great. I travel nationwide and have to use 411 all the time. Great service! I have been using this for 4 months. The "short" ad I listen to is usually shorter than the wait time I get when I pay!!!

How do you know this? I thought the free service was provided by the advertisement you have to listen to, to get the number.

It's called caller-id. And, on the business side of phone service, there is no way to block caller-id completely. You call them, and they will store you phone number for selling to others like telemarketers. Trust it if you want, but I wouldn't.

this service is great (I remember when 411 was free LOL) and think paying for information is a bit weird, the only thing about free 411 is they have ads (like a commercial on the phone while you wait for your number) thats how they can do it for free, advertisers pay to advertise something thru the company, hey works for me :)
