Interesting. One would have to be extremely careful diving something like that... appeared to be a lot of sharp, jagged edges that could play hell with the hoses.
They went inside the sub, looks like a leg or arm bone they pause on. Men died there and this is their grave, these bastards should know respect means more than their curiosity.
im sure the dive was amazing, but you really should learn how to shoot better footage. cause unless you know what to look for....theres nothing worse seeing in this video.
Sunk 6 May, 1945 in the North Atlantic south-east of New London, in position 41.13N, 71.27W, by depth charges from the US destroyer escort USS Atherton and the US patrol frigate USS Moberly. 55 dead (all hands lost).

they pulled the U 534 out of the water, but no crew members died inside that sub. It was hit by Allied forces and when it began to sink the entire crew escaped out the hatch and were captured. One crew member drowned while outside the sub, so the sub itself was not classified as a wargrave. You can see the videos here if you search for "U boat 534"
this is disturbing a war grave you can clearly see human bones and other remains!! what you are doing is shameful!! how would u like it if someone digged up your grandparrents or other relatives..
I live in RHODE ISLAND and this is well known, a popular dive spot for experienced divers, but I have never heard of looting at the site ... very interesting indeed !
i believe if a u boat or any other sub from ww2 was scuttled by there own country any body has the right to claim it if it is in good condition they should salvage it to preserve it or if it is a war grave it should be left alone and no one should dive on it that should be for all vessels from previous wars
Operation Dead Light was to sink subs after World War 2 was done far out in the Atlantic. This is a war grave to brave sailors regardless of where they were born. They should not be diving on this wreck, It is very disrespectful to anyone in the service past, present and future. These guys are just thrill seekers.
Its possible, but very unlikely, to find bones on wrecks. For any life to exist you must have oxygen. The oxygen atoms in the wreck s attach to Iron in the steel causing the steel to rust. If there is no water movement, there is no repletishment of the oxygen depleted water. Without the oxygen it takes a very long time for the calcium to disolve into the water.
They were indeed a couple of un-questionably human femurs and humerus (thigh and upper arm bones) in the film clip. As a university lecturer in medicine I can vouch for it with absolute certainty. As far as bones dissolving in salt water goes, you are totally misinformed. You seem to be confusing your personal opinion with fact. Complete skeletons from the wreck of the Mary Rose for example, were recovered. And she was a ship which sank in the 16th century.
Is it legal to drive on a wargrave? I hope if I ever meet such a fate that I come to rest outside to reach of such things. I'm curious was this a sponsored dive? Like on behalf of the family or university?
Diving a wreck for the purpose of identifying it and determining IF there are human remains onboard is PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE. Documenting a site through video and photographs I see nothing wrong with. I think what most folks are upset about are the divers who pillage wrecks.. Yet few complain about taking tons of gold and treasure from 17th and 18th century wrecks where people also died. This is NO DIFFERENT. Dead is dead people. The exception is that relatives now know their final resting place
Isn't U-853 the one discovered by Bill Nagle, John Kohler, and Ricky Chatterton? If so it is at over 200'!!! I am suprised that anyone had the balls to go that deep even with a rebreather trimix or nitrox... expecially with a camera... there are strong currents down there, and the world is entirely unforgiving at 120'
I specifically said "isn't U-853 the one discovered..." I wasn't sure and I didn't care to look it up. As for Nitrox... you're right. You won't make it anywhere near 200 feet. Depending on which nitrox mix you use, you can make it to 99 or 130 feet before you drown. Oxygen toxicity from the great percentage of 02 in nitrox causes a seizure. You drown period end of story. There can be currents anywhere and they are specifically strong off the east coast from the Gulf Stream. Even at depth
You were incorrect about the U Boat in question. You were incorrect about the names of the divers that discovered an entirely different U Boat. You are incorrect about diving below 120'. You are ignorant of the true nature , safe depth/mix and properties of nitrox . (but have enough knowlege to be dangerous) and lastly you are incorrect on the process of North Atantic currents and how they affect divers while underwater.
I would suggest more pool sessions and clasroom work.
I asked about the uboat, therefore I wasn't wrong. I only asked a question. I mixed up the divers first names, big deal. As for deep diving. I seriously doubt you have more experience than me. Ntrogen narcosis is a big deal at depth. It affects different people differently at different depths. Nitrox extends bottom time, but doesn't reduce narcosis. Only Trimix can do that. I have dived with trimix and nitrox many times and am certified with both. Currents are currents. They can be anywhere.
So now you want credit for a Trimix card? That's not gonna get you a lot of points here.
This has become tiresome. (and I admit I fanned the flames)
Lets agree on two things: I will no longer question your ability or knowlege as a diver and you will no longer continue to spout basic Nitrox and Trimix pablum as some sort of brilliant insite on how to conduct deep dives.
Did you come across any skeletons during the dive? Another question, if there had been any treasure or any type of stolen artifacts on board, who would have rights to possession under maritime law?
I would dispute that. I live in Fort Lauderdale and the y have found several Spanish Galleons laden with gold. Spain and the U.S tried to assert their claims in court, but eventually lost to the salvage company.
i understand that, i never said that it was a good thing to defile a war grave, all i said was that it would be further dis respectful to stuff a wreck of a ship with concrete i live in Virginia and there is a u boat sunk at the opening. and it is a popular dive site the only differenc is the US navy UOD swimmers went down there and sealed it up to prevent people from gettin inside and killing themselves with a live torpedoe.
when the war ended germany desided it was cheeper to sink the subs they had stationded around the us rather that bringing them home, it is very possible this is just a sunkin sub, not a war grave, i didn't see any bones, just oxidized metal, but, still a man sees what he wants to see and disregardes the rest.
Or where is the crew?
the us marine sunk that thing with depped charges! Crew DEAD!
@CarMoves I've dived with both actually. Nitrox more than trimix though. I live in TX and most of my diving is in the keys and gulf, so depths are centered in nitrox territory. I got my trimix certification diving off the east coast, but I only go there every other year or so because its expensive. 120ft isn't really deap, but it is plenty enough to kill you. I"m not an ass hole strutting around my max depth as if I'm better than everyone else, as I'd guess you are.
@HunterPilot24 -- You posted "... I am 16 now.. NAUI's programs are the best. I started with them and got adventure certifications from PATI and YMCA..."
Would ANY diver call PADI "PATI"? You're at Adventure Diver level, and you're claiming that you have Nitrox and Trimix certs? Reading SHADOW DIVERS doesn't get you any certs. Total noob.
I seriously doubt you know more about deep diving, and diving with mixed gases than me. The depth you can go with nitrox is limited because of high concentration of O2 in the tank. Below a certain depth, or bottom time, oxygen will kill you. Oxygen toxicity causes involuntary siezures. You drown!!! I will continue to argue if you keep misinterpreting facts. Look it up and study. I sure hope you don't do deep dives or Nitrox dives. If you do, you are lucky to be alive with your knowledge.
REALLY? Then how did I dive just with compressed air to 76m (250ft) and live? Except that the air felt pleasantly liquid I did not notice any strange effects.
@ziegle9876 I used normal air & a single steel 100 to dive this wreck back in the 90's. Certainly 250' is do-able but it is dangerous on air and always was. One day everything is fine the next a problem. Trimix though expensive is the way to go! At 125' which is where I was on this dive, I would use a 28% mix which would place me near 1.4ppo2. That would extend time, be safe and perhaps stave off Narcosis; though I doubt it, as there will still be about 72% Nitrogen in cylinder.
Great video, why is it that the only time soldiers deserve respect is after they die. If they hadnt been killed in the first place there would be nothing controversial to debate. I have been on hundreds of wrecks, many with remains and it is no different than walking on the battle site of gettysburg or saratoga
Wrecks are still considered graves. It's not just respect for the soldiers, it's respect for the dead. Let them rest in peace without someone traveling through their grave.
Tell that to the assholes who buy from Russian war grave robbers... The Russians don't even care if it's there own fallen there robbing just to make a quick buck. Robbing the graves of Russian or German dead is just plan wrong!
nice video, If the countries that once owned these military vessels were serious about protecting their sailors thay would do what the Japanese did at Truk Lagoon, they removed most of the visible bones/skulls at most of the wrecks.
How about those Americans?? There are 2 war 1812 ships in Lake Ontario with visible skulls, long bones and assorted pieces visible and actually published in a National Geographic magazine!!
Yes I don't believe that military wrecks should be visited unless specifically authorized by that nations government. This is a common practice by some governments. But I don't think this video should be posted, especially after what appears to be a human bone in one of those shots. That is very disrespectful.
Well it's not a dog bone... Its not a chicken bone... There was only one type of mammal on that ship so yes it does make sence that it is a human bone. What is disrespectful is saying that the video is disrespectful. What if "U853" did have permission to view this submarine. What if it is just public land? Dosen't really matter... I know for a fact you can find more "disrespectful" things on the internet or even on you tube than a harmless scuba video with "what appears to be a human bone"
Oddly, the sister of one of the crew settled in America after the fall of Germany. She lived in house on the beach, not knowing she was within eyesight of her brother's grave. The Shadow Divers were able to eventually name the U-Boat, and correct history, and notify surviving family.
Agreed. This may be one case where intrusion was merited. By entering the wreck, they were able to identify it and correct the historical record. It was a quite a gift to the families of the crew. Diving wrecks for archaeological reasons is a far cry from the underwater tourist, and I suspect the crew would not mind in this case.
Yes, The USS Wahoo, SS 238. Sunk after several hours of combined air/sea attack. Resides in 213 FSW, so hard to reach, but do able. The Russians found it, and oddly, there is a downed Soviet sub in the same area, near the same time (1945). It's a whole different story when its your own countrymen inside the hulk isn't it? I respect them all, and have nothing but contempt for those that disturb them.
You ever find any remains on any of your dives? I'm new to diving I just got certified last January and have only been on 3 other open water dives other than my cert. dive. But one was a wreck dive I did in the Bahamas off the Nasau coast on a plane that was sunk for the making of the movie "Into the Blue" so that was pretty neat. Same dive, also visited a sunken small tanker. I would love to learn more and become more experienced with wreck diving cause it's my favorite. Any advice?
Yes, my affable friend. Every single german soldier has been an absolutely convinced and practising National Socialist. Especially the young ones. I wish you'd have been german at that time or at least have german ancestors.
How can you dare to deprive them of the right to be respected as human beings?
By the way, how does it feel being responsible for the genocide of your Native Americans or for your slavery? Pretty well, doesn't it?
you are the thickest, most despicable person i have ever come across on youtube. Fighting for germany does not make you a Nazi. Jesus learn some history.
I heard of U boats off the coast of jersey and in the gulf of mexico but they got as close as RI? I know we sank a few ourselves from captured U-boats off the coast of Massachusetts but never heard of the this one. Thanks for the vid and were those human bones?
lol i live in bristol rhode island which is really close to block island,at castle they have the 2 propellers from the sub.theres german wrighing on it its so surrel.
Yes it's a war grave and we visit with nothing but respect. I think you would have to be a diver and student of U-Boat history to fully understand why we do this.
U-Boats are a pretty common dive destination for people all over the world.
For those who asked, yes those are bones and human remains. We never disturb, only visit to pay tribute to the fallen.
(And to the one who commented on Nitrox, your MOD is based on your mix. Not an arbitrary PADI number)
Give me a break. He didn't disrespect the site at all and his intentions seem good. Maybe if you ever get into scuba diving you'll see the thrill of diving a u boat.
It would be poetic justice for these grave tourists to join those they are viewing. Unfortunately, their bodies would defile the resting place of these brave men.
I earned my advance certification in 1977, and have been diving every since. I think I know the community quite well thank you. I have worked on submarines for over thirty years. I have studied the history of submarines since I was a kid. I have never entered a wreck with known fatalities, but have made mistakes.
Many shipwrecks contain human remains. It is a sad fact of war or weather that not everyone survives. But, you need not be frightened by this. As an "advanced diver" you simply don't have the skills to visit most of these wrecks anyway. I suggest you stay safe in your home and read about the places others go and the sights they see. It's known as research and it's where books come from. Condemning the ones who actually go is called being short sighted and is where ignorance comes from.
Thank you for the posting,I learned a lot reading all the differant comments as well. we need people like you to keep these brave men from being forgotton.
Yes, it is sad to witness the ravages of war. Bear in mind, though, that this particular war vessel attacked and sunk a US collier (the BlackPoint) after the cease fire was declared. No one will ever know whether the order was not received or whether it was received and ignored. Either way, it is a tragedy for the loved ones of all who were lost.
I've never dived, probably never will;thats OK. I'am just glad somone likes the deep dark sea and films these real articles of history for all us LAND LUBBERS to view and enjoy. This makes world history more tangible for everyone. Thank You U-853 from 70bonnie
Lieutenant senior grade (Oberleutnant) Helmut Frömsdorf was in command of this U-853 and by the way my great uncle.
Anyway, he had a nickname given by the hunting naval-ships commanders which was called "Seiltänzer" (ropedancer or tightrope walker)because of his ability of dodging the onslaughts.
He died at the age of 23. The average age of the crew was about 22.

The last sub sunk during WWII. The crew are all seen in the video. None survived. They manned battle stations and therefore earned respect as sailors. Wreck can be found off RI in 110fsw.
She's a few miles of Newport, about 8 miles out. You can reach her at 80-85 feet (Cunning Tower)to the bottom 130. There's a crap load of hedge-hogs and depth charges that still have not gone off next to her, so don't touch bottom! Great dive, using Nitrox pushing it since 130 is your limit.

dude it is a war grave, it really isnt unethical to go inside. it is unethical if you take stuff out of it
ckn117 2 years ago
Its possible, but very unlikely, to find bones on wrecks. For any life to exist you must have oxygen. The oxygen atoms in the wreck s attach to Iron in the steel causing the steel to rust. If there is no water movement, there is no repletishment of the oxygen depleted water. Without the oxygen it takes a very long time for the calcium to disolve into the water.
sjengdahl 2 years ago
@sjengdahl

I am suprised that anyone had the balls to go that deep even with a rebreather trimix or nitrox... expecially with a camera... there are strong currents down there, and the world is entirely unforgiving at 120'
not to mention 200'!!!
HunterPilot24 2 years ago
I am going to assume you are joking with this but for the sake of clarity:
No, that's the U-869 (which is 237 feet deep)
Their names are Richie Kohler and John Chatterton.
Nitrox will kill you at 200 feet.
There are rarely currents at that depth.
U853 2 years ago 4
I specifically said "isn't U-853 the one discovered..." I wasn't sure and I didn't care to look it up. As for Nitrox... you're right. You won't make it anywhere near 200 feet. Depending on which nitrox mix you use, you can make it to 99 or 130 feet before you drown. Oxygen toxicity from the great percentage of 02 in nitrox causes a seizure. You drown period end of story. There can be currents anywhere and they are specifically strong off the east coast from the Gulf Stream. Even at depth
HunterPilot24 2 years ago
You were incorrect about the U Boat in question. You were incorrect about the names of the divers that discovered an entirely different U Boat. You are incorrect about diving below 120'. You are ignorant of the true nature , safe depth/mix and properties of nitrox . (but have enough knowlege to be dangerous) and lastly you are incorrect on the process of North Atantic currents and how they affect divers while underwater.
I would suggest more pool sessions and clasroom work.
U853 2 years ago
I asked about the uboat, therefore I wasn't wrong. I only asked a question. I mixed up the divers first names, big deal. As for deep diving. I seriously doubt you have more experience than me. Ntrogen narcosis is a big deal at depth. It affects different people differently at different depths. Nitrox extends bottom time, but doesn't reduce narcosis. Only Trimix can do that. I have dived with trimix and nitrox many times and am certified with both. Currents are currents. They can be anywhere.
HunterPilot24 2 years ago 9
So now you want credit for a Trimix card? That's not gonna get you a lot of points here.
This has become tiresome. (and I admit I fanned the flames)
Lets agree on two things: I will no longer question your ability or knowlege as a diver and you will no longer continue to spout basic Nitrox and Trimix pablum as some sort of brilliant insite on how to conduct deep dives.
U853 2 years ago
I can live with that.

i understand that, i never said that it was a good thing to defile a war grave, all i said was that it would be further dis respectful to stuff a wreck of a ship with concrete i live in Virginia and there is a u boat sunk at the opening. and it is a popular dive site the only differenc is the US navy UOD swimmers went down there and sealed it up to prevent people from gettin inside and killing themselves with a live torpedoe.

@HunterPilot24 -- the newbie way you talk about Nitrox and Trimix, I'd bet you've never dived with either.
And you speak of 120ft as being really deep.
I'd guess you aren't a diver and got all of your knowledge from Shadow Divers OR if you are a diver, you only have an OW c-card.
CarMoves 1 year ago
@CarMoves I've dived with both actually. Nitrox more than trimix though. I live in TX and most of my diving is in the keys and gulf, so depths are centered in nitrox territory. I got my trimix certification diving off the east coast, but I only go there every other year or so because its expensive. 120ft isn't really deap, but it is plenty enough to kill you. I"m not an ass hole strutting around my max depth as if I'm better than everyone else, as I'd guess you are.
HunterPilot24 1 year ago
@HunterPilot24 -- You posted "... I am 16 now.. NAUI's programs are the best. I started with them and got adventure certifications from PATI and YMCA..."
Would ANY diver call PADI "PATI"? You're at Adventure Diver level, and you're claiming that you have Nitrox and Trimix certs? Reading SHADOW DIVERS doesn't get you any certs. Total noob.
CarMoves 1 year ago

Except that the air felt pleasantly liquid I did not notice any strange effects.
ziegle9876 5 months ago

Let them rest in peace without someone traveling through their grave.

nice video, If the countries that once owned these military vessels were serious about protecting their sailors thay would do what the Japanese did at Truk Lagoon, they removed most of the visible bones/skulls at most of the wrecks.
How about those Americans?? There are 2 war 1812 ships in Lake Ontario with visible skulls, long bones and assorted pieces visible and actually published in a National Geographic magazine!!
elykat 3 years ago
Yes I don't believe that military wrecks should be visited unless specifically authorized by that nations government. This is a common practice by some governments. But I don't think this video should be posted, especially after what appears to be a human bone in one of those shots. That is very disrespectful.
Sunburn2007 3 years ago
Well it's not a dog bone... Its not a chicken bone... There was only one type of mammal on that ship so yes it does make sence that it is a human bone. What is disrespectful is saying that the video is disrespectful. What if "U853" did have permission to view this submarine. What if it is just public land? Dosen't really matter... I know for a fact you can find more "disrespectful" things on the internet or even on you tube than a harmless scuba video with "what appears to be a human bone"

Off the coast of Rhode Island. There was a book called Shadow Divers about the discovory of this boat.
Cope1216 3 years ago
Oddly, the sister of one of the crew settled in America after the fall of Germany. She lived in house on the beach, not knowing she was within eyesight of her brother's grave. The Shadow Divers were able to eventually name the U-Boat, and correct history, and notify surviving family.
Karpindur 3 years ago
Yeah I read the book a last year abd thought ot was great. I have mixed feelings about divers around it.
Cope1216 3 years ago
Agreed. This may be one case where intrusion was merited. By entering the wreck, they were able to identify it and correct the historical record. It was a quite a gift to the families of the crew. Diving wrecks for archaeological reasons is a far cry from the underwater tourist, and I suspect the crew would not mind in this case.

U853 3 years ago

Any advice?

Yes it's a war grave and we visit with nothing but respect. I think you would have to be a diver and student of U-Boat history to fully understand why we do this.
U-Boats are a pretty common dive destination for people all over the world.
For those who asked, yes those are bones and human remains. We never disturb, only visit to pay tribute to the fallen.

Karpindur 3 years ago
Many shipwrecks contain human remains. It is a sad fact of war or weather that not everyone survives. But, you need not be frightened by this. As an "advanced diver" you simply don't have the skills to visit most of these wrecks anyway. I suggest you stay safe in your home and read about the places others go and the sights they see. It's known as research and it's where books come from. Condemning the ones who actually go is called being short sighted and is where ignorance comes from.

Lieutenant senior grade (Oberleutnant) Helmut Frömsdorf was in command of this U-853 and by the way my great uncle.

He died at the age of 23. The average age of the crew was about 22.
