In the 50es, when I was a little boy, I was most deeply impressed by a special spiritual singers group. Today the impact came again. I will begin to read Baldwin.
What a great role model for African Americans! Too bad he was a rare gem. This world would be so much better off if more people thought and acted on the level he was.
@godisanegro I didn't intend to imply that he did not stir me by his words and example. I simply wanted to point out a great African American that stood above the crowd and had so much against him yet he prevailed and won. I enjoy the distinction of our races not because it makes us divided. I enjoy it because it gives us as a people a satiating variety of humanity. I rather view it as ethnic variety rather than diversity. I will end though and say I see James as a great man.
@godisanegro Sadly I live in a cultural shell in Utah. With only the media to rely on for info can only make things worse. When I travel back east I go through some culture shock. I once sat next to a large African American on a plane back home. At first I was apprehensive & nervous. Eventually I began speaking with him and found him to be much like me in that he was a professional in the computer industry. We talked the entire flight. He also shared his artistic abilities.
One must possess a depth of character in order to fully appreciate the genius of this colossal man and his supreme intellect. James Baldwin was Gods' intention of true humanity. Ase.
James Baldwin wrote once about singing "In That Great Gettin' Up Mornin" and other songs to a ballroom audience during a transatlantic steamship voyage in the 1950s. I'd always wondered what that would have been like, but this gives some idea.
Thanks, besodelaflaca, for the link! Like don1carter, I'd never heard James Baldwin sing before, not like this, even though he's been my hero ever since I was 13 (a long time ago :) ) ... The man moved, so much and so many, in so many ways, and keeps on moving. Amazing grace, indeed.
My, My....James Baldwin was my hero, but I never heard him sing before. I always thought his music was limited to words on paper. This is very touching. If anyone has any other clips of him singing, or just speaking, please post. His gift for illuminating issues remains unsurpassed.

@MormonManUtah I'd submit he's a great example for everyone, regardless of racial or ethnic identity. We all have much to learn from each other.

@MormonManUtah agreed! ethnic/racial/religious/gender difference gives us so many opportunities for learning and collaboration between us.
