I was never a huge fan of the Collins-only Genesis and never thought much much of Collins in Genesis. I had heard Brand-X when I was in my early 20's and only later discovered who Collins was and then he was drummer for Brand-X and I was just amazed.
Goodsall, Jones and Lumley - class acts to a man. Why did Collins bail for Genesis? Cash? The others carried on with the project, and imho produced music far more intersting than Genesis ever did.
unfortunately, phil kinda bailed on this bandnot too long after his involvement with them (wasn't his band, it was more a case of him playing with brand x); my friend woody was brought in almost straight away, so that they COULD tour (the u.s., in particular). in phil's defense, genesis were at their 2nd major pivotal moment with him as their singer, so his time was limited. percy, btw, married 1 of my best friends from high school. percy & morris really were the heart of that band....
@bbqboyee - totally agree imo his best work by far was with brand x - speaking as a bass player id rank him up alongside the likes of billy cobham for grooveablility :o)
There's got to be perfect quality BRAND X out there somewhere! I saw them open for McLaughlin and One Truth Band in NYC, 1978 and without Goodsall as he had tendinitis.Still, it was one of those incredible shows where one "See's GOD"..... I also have plenty of their 1976-1979 shows if anyone wants to trade.
I still clearly remember seeing this when it was first broadcast on the Whistle Test ( I suppose I was about 17?). I thought it was the most amazing thing I'd ever heard and went out and bought the album the next day. I still have the vinyl, but I never thought I would be able to see the video again. Of course, a lot of musical water has passed under the bridge since then, but it is still a classic of its genre.
Unbelievable vibe by Phil. Step back! Master at work! Anyone who plays drums can relate to Phil right at the 4:30 mark. Look at the slight tilt of the head at 4:36 and again at 4:38. That is a drummer completely in the ZONE. That Zone is so alive; so present; so blissful; it’s a 100x’s better than the best sex.
I get a kick out of the young guys who don't realize this is Phil Collins on drums....yes, he was once this cool; a highly creative self-taught drummer. What you hear are years of hard work and dedication, but alas nothing's permanent in this world and it all changed in 1980 with "Duke" and the hit candy-single "Misunderstanding". No hard feelings towards Phil -- only a profound respect.
@stevepaukent Yes, I think you are correct. The 9/8 is pretty obvious to start off with, but as the song progresses I'm always so caught up in the energy I'd never bothered to pin down the exact moment of the switch. It's only later on that I think "hey, where'd the 9/8 go?" Thanks for pointing it out.
Just watched this first time, can only mimic what others have said here. Phil slays the set here and held his own with ANY fusion drummer from this era (yes, I know thats some heavy hitters). Love Phil playing, hate him when he's in the stu-stu-studio :). 2 cents.
Had the luck to see the Phil, Percy, Robin, Morris, John config in a small club in SF ... Still blows my mind today to think of it!
I think Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree has the '70s Phil chops, but he never has to sing whilst drumming. @skincauldron is right about the shame of people knowing Phil only as the frontman of the most sub-par version of Genesis, or as the yucky AOR spewer ...
BTW, RIP Morris Pert, who passed earlier this year ...
@simondclinch Sorry pal; you can't count. Break out the original "Product" version and listen from the beginning. It most definitely starts out in 9/8, though at some point they appear to blur the distinction and gravitate towards 4/4, probably because the pace becomes so frenzied. And calling the singing and drumming "synchronized" is just plain naive. His voice and limbs are in two completely different musical zones.
Two recollections: I saw them at the original Marquee in Wardour Street in the long hot summer of 1976 - condensation running down the walls, Magic!
I went to see Phil Collins at the Albert hall on the "No Jacket Required" Tour. Good Stuff. He did THIS as an encore - Daryl Steurmer allowed to let rip. Can you imagine the faces of the peeps more used to Susudio? Priceless!!!
I was blown away when I saw it and my parents telling me to turn it down! They are performing live. Pete Robinsons keys intro was originally done by Morris Pert on Glock in the studio. And on PC's first live tours the encore was and So to F, and very few knew what it was but we shouted out at the Odeon ( for it will always be even though they call it Apollo) anyway. Daryl Stuermer ripped the intro far better than Giblin as it suits DS's style. Happy days....

@JudgeBluey Hello mate; I live in Belgium and I'm quiet interested in Brand X. Do you have something I miss ? I'm curious !!! Please give me more details or your personal email. Thanx
John Goodsall should go down as one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Way under rated and not noticed enough. This guy has the guitar playing style and shredding like Terry Kath of Chicago did.
What's really mind boggling about this song is that it's in a very fast 9/8 time signature, and Phil is just ripping it to shreds! Not only that, when he starts singing over the top (shortly after 3:50) listen to what he's playing underneath... The cleanest and sweetest sounding doubles and paradiddles on the high-hat, snare, and kick that no other mortal could hope to duplicate, and he's just floatin' over the top with a vocal part that's completely detached from the drum part. BRILLIANT!
bbqboyee, I couldn't have said it any better. It's ashame that most people only know Phil Collins as an 80's soft rock artist and not as one of the best drummers in rock history. He's like a maelstrom behind the kit; simply amazing to hear and watch him play.
Finally, there are others who are confirming what I've been saying in regards to Phil's 70's-vs-80's drumming...to miss hearing/watching his 70's creative and intricate drumwork with Genesis/Brand X could be a travesty...(to me) on some songs his sticks seem to float and dance in his hands..thanks, Phil, for your contribution...
my god, what a trip into the past that was! Thanks so much for this posing. It literally made my hair stand on end (what little I have left I mean) Those were happier days. And, what a band!
Yes! That was great work, but for some reason in my heart, it wasn't quite like Romantic Warrior. Romatic Warrior was just different somehow. Maybe it was because it was, I think, one of the cleanest recordings ever made prior to 1976. Seems to me that the recording engineers had mics on EVERYTHING! The bass was clean, keys and synth were clean. Guitar was awesome and every drum/cymbal was perfectly recorded. Seems like this was novelty from the music that I've heard. Awesome, huh?!!!!!
What you're listening to is just the intro of a nicely written piece of music....Brand X was highly inventive for their time and Phil demonstrates himself as an amazing drummer, even in today's standards. Most drummers of today cannot play like Phil, and this was 30 years ago! Truly, Phil is an absolute icon to the drumming world. Unfortunately, his influence is virtually unrecognizable and I can't understand how this travesty ever took place.
Early Genesis showed his prowess pretty good too. I pulled out my old "Selling England By The Pound" and there he was....playing his nuts off! I couldn't believe it. Anyways, he really show-cased his full skillset with Brand X. I'd say that this is when he was at his best.
Agreed, this is not the best example of Brand X! The year was 1979, just shortly after what I would say was the true birth of "Jazz Fusion" which took place in 1976 when Chick Corea released his "Romantic Warrior" album (not Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew").
WHO'S SANTANA? Is that a Tequila-drinking guy from the land over the water? This band is a milestone. Perhaps you don't think much of them- but hey! They come from the country where all popular music since the 60s: The U.K.!
A great band! I found a bunch of their records in a cut-out bin years ago.....I bought all of 'em! John Goodsall is a highly under-rated MONSTER guitarist! (The rest of the band is pretty good, too!.........;-)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You can almost feel Annie Nightingale gritting her teeth during the intro. Bizzare that this is the same Phil Collins who later recorded some utter pap later in his career

Oh how they laughed at Collins. Oh how they mocked what they thought he was. Than God some of us know where he came from and what he travelled through to get where he was. By the time he was pop, he was only firing on two cylinders. Wasted and misunderstood.
you have to check out Phil Collins version of this. He used to play this as a oncore during his 82 tour with Daryl Stuermer and Chester Thompson ,Peter Robinson on keys,Mo Foster on bass.
Phil Collins' best work as a drummer was from 1973-1979. Once he began using a Roland drum machine, he stopped being innovative. Listen to any of his original work since 1979. They lack the time signatures you hear on this or other Brand X or pre- 1979 Genesis compositions. The drum machine made him lazy.
your comment is so right - he was such a innovative and really good drummer until eventually "Duke", even from today's point of view.....after that the quality of his drumming really went down....
Actually, the drum machine did not make him lazy, it made him rich. Also, he didn't stop becoming innovative, he switched was he was being innovative on. He became the most innovative drum machine programmer the world had at that time, and, his programming holds up to anything going on today as well.
Blu..it made him rich, lazy & FAT. There's nothing innovative about plugging a drum machine into a wall outlet & turning it on.
Programming isn't DRUMMING.
Music, specifically rhythm, is rooted in emotion feeling & grooves that a computer chip can'' recognize.
I still love PC and his drumming, but he was a better drummer when he was still financially struggling. He was a musician, then. I can get any kid to program a drum machine. That's just another computer.
You might be able to get any kid to program a drum machine, but he won't be able to program it anywhere near as well as Phil Collins. I never said programming was drumming. He changed the instrument he innovated on. Maybe, he figured he took his drumming as far as he could and discovered he really enjoyed programming. He certainly found out he was very good at it. I wouldn't say he was lazy either. You couldn't get away from his music on the radio in the 80s. That takes work, not laziness.
Blu...I think it's safe to say we're both PC fans but I just can't get on board with putting "drum machine" and "innovation" in the same sentence. For example, listen again to this track. The percussion is all hands and feet. I can't give the same respect to a silicone chip or the press of a button with one finger. PC was all over the radio in the 1980s because of marketing. In the US, its all marketing. That's why so much great music remains unheard here.
Have you ever tried programming beats? Sure, anyone can make "beats", just like anyone can play "beats" on a drumset. It takes a master to play the kit as well as PC, and it takes a rhythmic genius to program as well as he did. Try copying his programming, its about as hard to do as it is to copy his playing. Finesse man, it's all about finesse.
I agree but Genesis stopped using thos unusual time signatures and changes in the eighties so the need for Collins to drum those time sigs was gone. He can still do it if the music demands. In my view he should have stayed behind the drums. That's where he excels.
While I agree that his best drum period is from 73-79, i disagree with WHY. It has nothing to do with drum machines. His drumming is great with and without machines. In fact, I can count on one hand how many times he actually programmed DRUMS in his whole 40 year career. He mainly programmed his percussion which he would STILL play live drums over. Collins simplified his drum style to fit with the changing musical genres at the time, as how ANY musician with longevity would do.
Collins' greatest strength as a drummer is how "natural" his playing is. Like here, for example. It's very fluid and organic. The machines are great as an aide or a tool. To me, they ended up becoming a crutch.
And in my opinion, musicians with longevity don't follow musical trends...they CREATE them.
Does anybody know if the album version of this song features Phil Collins? I know he wrote the song, but I've been looking at credits on Wikipedia and they say that Mike Clark played drums on it. Is that true?
Phil was a very fine drummer, and with his first steps in his solocareer (and his last steps in Brand-x) he really added a complete new approach to drumsound (sound was always his best feature) and yes he then sadly stepped out as an interesting drummer. But hey it happened before. Remember Narada micheal Walden as drummer in Mahavishnu WOW and then... sad stories indeed
Saying Phil "was" a very fine drummer is unfair. He still "is" a very fine drummer. It's just that the pop hits have overshadowed the "wild frontiers". The hits may have paid off a mortgage or two, but he is still quite capable of a few surprises.
During a seated interview with Phil Collins just before this clip, unbeknownst to host Annie Nightingale, keyboard players Robin and Peter had tied her and Phil's shoe laces together. There was a mad scramble to cut them before this performance could go ahead.
this was filmed in october 79, i hope i'M wrong but i think its the only footage existing of the band with phil. and sadly one of his last performance with brand x. his drumming really added something special to that band. without him they're still great but kind of sounding like a lot of other fusion bands of the time.

Just too damn bad Phil wanted to be a `star' so bad. Wish to gawd he'd kept up this Brand X type stuff.

I would say RTF's earlier "Hymn of the seventh galaxy" (3 albums before Romantic Warrior)
dhjdhj 3 years ago

Phils drum work in INCREDIBLE.
AND he does that vocal part on top of it. Outstanding. I can't believe Brand X, as a whole is so unknown. they were brilliant!
SpagsJippy 3 years ago 2
What you're listening to is just the intro of a nicely written piece of music....Brand X was highly inventive for their time and Phil demonstrates himself as an amazing drummer, even in today's standards. Most drummers of today cannot play like Phil, and this was 30 years ago! Truly, Phil is an absolute icon to the drumming world. Unfortunately, his influence is virtually unrecognizable and I can't understand how this travesty ever took place.

Thanks, but I do have to eat a bit of crow.....:)
Early Genesis showed his prowess pretty good too. I pulled out my old "Selling England By The Pound" and there he was....playing his nuts off! I couldn't believe it. Anyways, he really show-cased his full skillset with Brand X. I'd say that this is when he was at his best.
Thanks for the reply!
Xformat01 3 years ago 2
Agreed, this is not the best example of Brand X! The year was 1979, just shortly after what I would say was the true birth of "Jazz Fusion" which took place in 1976 when Chick Corea released his "Romantic Warrior" album (not Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew").

That 20th century fox-spoof at the beginning- was that a Brand X trademark or was it a Grey WHISTE-STANDARD?

Oh how they laughed at Collins. Oh how they mocked what they thought he was. Than God some of us know where he came from and what he travelled through to get where he was. By the time he was pop, he was only firing on two cylinders. Wasted and misunderstood.

SireThomasAsh 4 years ago
your comment is so right - he was such a innovative and really good drummer until eventually "Duke", even from today's point of view.....after that the quality of his drumming really went down....
Drummer1410 3 years ago
Actually, the drum machine did not make him lazy, it made him rich. Also, he didn't stop becoming innovative, he switched was he was being innovative on. He became the most innovative drum machine programmer the world had at that time, and, his programming holds up to anything going on today as well.
bluudevil 3 years ago 3
Blu..it made him rich, lazy & FAT. There's nothing innovative about plugging a drum machine into a wall outlet & turning it on.
Programming isn't DRUMMING.
Music, specifically rhythm, is rooted in emotion feeling & grooves that a computer chip can'' recognize.
I still love PC and his drumming, but he was a better drummer when he was still financially struggling. He was a musician, then. I can get any kid to program a drum machine. That's just another computer.
knouraee 3 years ago
You might be able to get any kid to program a drum machine, but he won't be able to program it anywhere near as well as Phil Collins. I never said programming was drumming. He changed the instrument he innovated on. Maybe, he figured he took his drumming as far as he could and discovered he really enjoyed programming. He certainly found out he was very good at it. I wouldn't say he was lazy either. You couldn't get away from his music on the radio in the 80s. That takes work, not laziness.
bluudevil 3 years ago
Blu...I think it's safe to say we're both PC fans but I just can't get on board with putting "drum machine" and "innovation" in the same sentence. For example, listen again to this track. The percussion is all hands and feet. I can't give the same respect to a silicone chip or the press of a button with one finger. PC was all over the radio in the 1980s because of marketing. In the US, its all marketing. That's why so much great music remains unheard here.
knouraee 3 years ago
Have you ever tried programming beats? Sure, anyone can make "beats", just like anyone can play "beats" on a drumset. It takes a master to play the kit as well as PC, and it takes a rhythmic genius to program as well as he did. Try copying his programming, its about as hard to do as it is to copy his playing. Finesse man, it's all about finesse.
bluudevil 3 years ago
Knouraee
Rich? Agreed.
Lazy? Hardly. At the time, he was known for being "Mr.Nice Guy," the hardest working guy in show biz.
Fat? Nope. That was due to Collins' steroid use.
agentknyne 3 years ago
I agree but Genesis stopped using thos unusual time signatures and changes in the eighties so the need for Collins to drum those time sigs was gone. He can still do it if the music demands. In my view he should have stayed behind the drums. That's where he excels.
arthurmee 3 years ago
Knouraee
While I agree that his best drum period is from 73-79, i disagree with WHY. It has nothing to do with drum machines. His drumming is great with and without machines. In fact, I can count on one hand how many times he actually programmed DRUMS in his whole 40 year career. He mainly programmed his percussion which he would STILL play live drums over. Collins simplified his drum style to fit with the changing musical genres at the time, as how ANY musician with longevity would do.
agentknyne 3 years ago
Collins' greatest strength as a drummer is how "natural" his playing is. Like here, for example. It's very fluid and organic. The machines are great as an aide or a tool. To me, they ended up becoming a crutch.
And in my opinion, musicians with longevity don't follow musical trends...they CREATE them.

spikerooney011 4 years ago 4
Phil was a very fine drummer, and with his first steps in his solocareer (and his last steps in Brand-x) he really added a complete new approach to drumsound (sound was always his best feature) and yes he then sadly stepped out as an interesting drummer. But hey it happened before. Remember Narada micheal Walden as drummer in Mahavishnu WOW and then... sad stories indeed
cybeavertoo 4 years ago 2
Saying Phil "was" a very fine drummer is unfair. He still "is" a very fine drummer. It's just that the pop hits have overshadowed the "wild frontiers". The hits may have paid off a mortgage or two, but he is still quite capable of a few surprises.
nibiru48 4 years ago
During a seated interview with Phil Collins just before this clip, unbeknownst to host Annie Nightingale, keyboard players Robin and Peter had tied her and Phil's shoe laces together. There was a mad scramble to cut them before this performance could go ahead.
nibiru48 4 years ago
this was filmed in october 79, i hope i'M wrong but i think its the only footage existing of the band with phil. and sadly one of his last performance with brand x. his drumming really added something special to that band. without him they're still great but kind of sounding like a lot of other fusion bands of the time.
