  • I think that this song used NBC News Today's theme

  • I just came from DC two weeks ago and this came in mind.

  • "The Mission" NBC News Theme by John Williams

  • The one idiot that disliked this theme must have no taste or whatever, of classical news themes like this!

  • wonderful to come again and hear this great theme that cannot be played at this length today due to corporate greed ...

  • My favorite is from 1:12 onward

  • @kyle1081 ...That favorite bit begins at 0:59 for me...when the first slide trombone sounds Baa Da Da Daaaa Ba Daa Daa Daaaa!

  • that sounds better than the one they use now

  • this sounds better than the one they use now

  • Usually the NBC closing theme would last about 15-20 seconds, only on a slow news day-once about every two or three weeks--would there be enough potential dead-air time to warrant playing a longer version of "The Mission".

  • I always expected to see Superman fly by hearing the theme.

  • @ebf1957 I was thinkin' the same thing - but with ET's moonlight silhouette in there too...

  • BRING BACK THE LONG VERSION!

  • I miss the old version of the "The Mission"

  • I Believe This Was NBC News' NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw Video Close From Friday Evening, May 19, 1995.

  • This makes me feel special.

  • Top 3 favorite epic legendary news themes of all time. #3 ABC's World News Tonight With Peter Jennings R.I.P. (1938-2005), #2 CBS Evening News With Dan Rather, & @ #1, NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw.

  • I have always loved the fabulous dreamy tone of this theme.

  • I'm 40! Not 53! And yes, in the 80's being a teeneger was cool it was the period of dreams, as we can hear in that theme song, by the way E.T., Star Wars and Star Trek were less violent than movies of todays.

  • NBC News: SUNRISE, TODAY, Sunday TODAY, NBC Nightly News, DIGEST

NBC NEWS has made ALOT of people famous:

Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley, Deborah Norville, Maria Shriver, Ann Curry, Katie Couric, Matt Laurer, John Palmer, Faith Daniels, Brian Williams, Garrick Utley, John Chancellor, Mary Alice Williams, Chuck Scarborugh, and of course the king of NBC Nightly News Tom Brokaw

and let's not forget about Willard Scott, Gene Schallat, Al Roker and the newest member of the family Meredith Vieria

  • I thought being a teenager in the 80's sucked. I look at what today's teens face, and think me and my peers had it relatively good.

  • Well where ae you people of the eighy's? That's remind me my teen period....how it was marvelous...in the 80's....And this NBC News Them was so soft...!

  • Frederick is actually 53.

  • Can we ever get back to these times?

  • Comment removed

  • I wish we could return to those days too, that more halcyon time of the mid 90's.. less greed, time for end music...

  • Perfect synchronisation music and birds flying in front of the Capitol Hill, was it pure coincidental?

I love this version, it was a soft ending.

    Thank you.

    Frédérick, FRANCE.

Do you have more from 1989 to 1992?

  • @FrederickNetwork yeah that was awesome

  • Do you know what time of year from 1995 this was taped?

  • Oh my god flashbulbs are going off at 0:17. People are taking photos. They must be terrorists.

  • THEY HAVE THE BEST BUMBER1

  • only credits that show these days is if you retire or die...

  • Usually close to Christmas, if, at all.

  • yep, used to be on Friday you could hear a longer run of credits.. tonight the usual ten to 15 seconds.... got to have those extra commercials and pr agenda stories..

  • usually on fridays

  • I don't like the newer, updated version of "The Mission". I loved it when they had a long close like this.

  • I love it!

  • Born and raised in the DC area, currently at school outside the area.

Videos like this remind why I love that area so much.

  • Composer JOHN WILLIAMS RULES!

  • THis is the DC version.....

  • NBC nightly news in the 90's was broadcast from Washington on the weekends and yes, no room for end music now. The nightly news is now about 50% commercials...What say you Brian Williams?

  • NBC news is packed with commercial because it is one of few money makers for NBC and GE. NBC Nightly News is the top-watched news broadcast.

  • Actually, Brian WIlliams has pushed for a few nights with limited commercial interuption. It's a disgrace that we get so little of the only good summary of the days events, without the "agendas". Yes, nightly news now has PR agendas too, I'm sure John Chancellor is spinning...

  • not the weekend show, that show had different anchor name in title. this credit list is the ny "a" group (sadly most are gone now). this dc "b" deadroll credit bed was used when the brokaw show originated from dc.

  • I knew it wasn't the weekend show. It's the DC version of nightly news.

  • I like at the end after the big flock of birds fly by when, for the last, very light "DUM-DA-DUM-DA-DUM-DUM-DUM" one last bird takes off and flies across the Capitol.

  • wow, video graphics have changed so much over the last 15 years or so. never really noticed it before.

  • When I was growing up, I used to hope every night that they'd play the long ending just like this. Seriously. And they'd only do it maybe twice a year. Thanks for capturing and sharing it!

  • gotta have those extra commericials.... the SOB's...

  • We still get NBC Nightly News here in New Zealand. I can remember this long theme quite well...Real Clinton era, hieght of Baby Boomer power in America...Love the winter evening long shots of DC. "The Mission" theme was used by TV3 News and Nightline for some years in NZ, but it's seldom heard now. Iconic!

  • @AlexCherr72 hi Alex... good reply, had no idea you guys get network newcasts, esp then.. I love this theme of all the many I've listened to here in the states, sadly there is not time built in for long closes today. Even then it was rare, maybe once a week or two. Tom Brokaw was prob in the Washington studio that night. Yes, halcyon days, mid 90's... I miss them for many reasons, even if Clinton was president...

  • @irish89055 ...yeah same...TV3 had the rights to NBC and 'The Mission', Usually the Friday evening news got the 'long close' and in New Zealand's case, used long shot scenery of the country and the main cities, (including, sadly now, a lovely shot of Christchurch Cathedral), finishing with an ariel above cloud shot of the sun going down behind Mt Cook, our tallest...Have written to TV3 to post it up but they've lost the video.

  • @2000Ajjet I hope you guys have a quick recovery from the earthquake... it was distressing to see from here. I'm sure the Cathedral will be made right. Your country is lovely indeed, watched a globetrekker show the other day from NZ... best regards,

    Andrew, Richmond, VA

  • I miss this old broadcast, before NBC News became very dishonest and in the tank for Obama. The music is awesome, but their politics sucks.

  • Love the music

  • amen to that

  • Comment removed

  • Best lineup of anchorman: Brokaw, Rather and Jennings.

  • Best closing song ever!

  • CBS? Never!

  • The OLD cbs...from 1991-2006. Not that gay shit they play today! Hell no!

  • Yeah? Where can I find it so I can take a look?

  • Great video, also great music!!!!!! I wish Tom Brokaw still hosted NBC Nightly News!!!!

  • Nice video and music. What was the airdate? Looks like winter time. Must have been a slow newsday to have time to run all that. Anymore you just barely get a few seconds in before they throw in a bunch of promos.

  • Cory, yes, true... and it's a shame all the ads now and little time for end music. on rare nights they do a limited commerical newscast, I'd like to see an hour broadcast as this half hour is the best concentration of news, though PR pieces now dominate last half.. but the affilates would never give up Inside Addition ect.. It seems to be winter in the one shot of DC from across the Potomac river. Some broadcasts originated from Washington esp on weekends at that time.. this is 95

  • Besides, Inside Edition is from CBS Television Distribution, NBC's competitor.

Shame they didn't mention the composer in these credits. Something like "Nightly News Theme: John Williams".

  • It had to be before they closed off Pennsylvania Avenue on May 20, 1995 b/c you can see cars driving in front of the White House from :27 to :36. And you're right on the winter too as you can see the bare trees by the Lincoln Memorial from :50 to 1:00. It could be a lot of stock footage just put together for a long closing.

1995 - those were the good ol' days in Washington.

  • great video and i love th music!

  • TODAY uses the music

  • Today doesnt.

  • I also like those shots of landmarks from our nation's capital. It the theme really emphasizes them. Was this a special broadcast from D.C.?

  • no, it was a broadcast from mount everest but they decided to use shots of washington to close the programme. of course it was washington.

  • BEST NEWS THEME EVER!!!!!! Sounds like it's from a movie. But then again it WAS composed by a movie composer (John Williams). Nice shot at the end with all the birds flying across with the final rise in the music and the one flying across at the very end and the soft melody.

  • America has the best lineup of news themes. Be glad you live here.

  • The Mission Theme has a new recording.

  • I hope to one day work for network news. I have my AA in TV broadcasting but I am also working on getting my BA and I have also written and published my first book. And I'm only 26!

  • Hey, my dream is exactly the same! I'm studying Journalism at college but I'm just 18! I didn't write any book yet :) but I'd like to. You should share the title of your book so we can enjoy it! Cheers from Europe!

  • LISTEN PPL, they dont show credits anymore cuz they dont have the time...the truth is they dont have any even made up to put in. Also yes this is "The Mission" (the theme for NBC News) this is from 1995 and since then a lot has changed. AND NO IT IS NOT A UNION REQUIREMENT!!!!

  • they dont have the time because they want to cram as much promos as they can in the show. ITS ALL ABOUT THE DOLLARS

  • @SanAntonioNews78 corporate

  • Comment removed

  • @SanAntonioNews78 you said it, San Antonio..... sadly the nightly tradional network broadcasts are dying, few under age 40 ever watch...or read a newspaper..

  • y horrible?

  • The Mission is awesome

  • The theme is actually titled "The Mission" for those who didn't know.

"NBC Nightly News is a presentation of NBC News. More Americans are watching NBC News than any other news organization in the world."

  • this is awesome

  • The Today Show theme??

  • Aussie, no the NBC Nightly news... they rarely run this much of it... got to have more commercials.. the crass part of American tv..Occasionly Mr . WIlliams can get a newscast with limited interruption..I know the Newsman want more time for news. They'd go for an hour instead of a half but the affiliates won't let them expand. Right? San Antonio News...

  • they use this for nearly all of their news programs, just different cuts of it and different versions.

  • Was this a union requirement?

  • Now they only display names when folks retire or leave the broadcast.

  • i know everyone who worked on this show

  • really?

  • yup, my mom works at NBC

  • Which division?

Can you ask her to let you post some old NBC graphics here on YT?

  • Must have been a quiet news day if they let the close run this long.

    Great theme though.

  • This clip is pure gold!

  • Just beyond amazing.

  • never get to hear it anymore... gotta have all those commercials.. yeahh.. bastards..

  • Thank John Williams of Superman, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars fame. A great American composer.

  • My ALL time favorite TV theme song. I love NBC Nightly News

  • besides the tower v1 lol

  • great theme!

  • great stuff

  • I loved this music GREAT!

  • Amazing! Thx
