Usually the NBC closing theme would last about 15-20 seconds, only on a slow news day-once about every two or three weeks--would there be enough potential dead-air time to warrant playing a longer version of "The Mission".
Top 3 favorite epic legendary news themes of all time. #3 ABC's World News Tonight With Peter Jennings R.I.P. (1938-2005), #2 CBS Evening News With Dan Rather, & @ #1, NBC Nightly News With Tom Brokaw.
I'm 40! Not 53! And yes, in the 80's being a teeneger was cool it was the period of dreams, as we can hear in that theme song, by the way E.T., Star Wars and Star Trek were less violent than movies of todays.
Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley, Deborah Norville, Maria Shriver, Ann Curry, Katie Couric, Matt Laurer, John Palmer, Faith Daniels, Brian Williams, Garrick Utley, John Chancellor, Mary Alice Williams, Chuck Scarborugh, and of course the king of NBC Nightly News Tom Brokaw
and let's not forget about Willard Scott, Gene Schallat, Al Roker and the newest member of the family Meredith Vieria
Well where ae you people of the eighy's? That's remind me my teen period....how it was marvelous...in the 80's....And this NBC News Them was so soft...!
yep, used to be on Friday you could hear a longer run of credits.. tonight the usual ten to 15 seconds.... got to have those extra commercials and pr agenda stories..
NBC nightly news in the 90's was broadcast from Washington on the weekends and yes, no room for end music now. The nightly news is now about 50% commercials...What say you Brian Williams?
Actually, Brian WIlliams has pushed for a few nights with limited commercial interuption. It's a disgrace that we get so little of the only good summary of the days events, without the "agendas". Yes, nightly news now has PR agendas too, I'm sure John Chancellor is spinning...
not the weekend show, that show had different anchor name in title. this credit list is the ny "a" group (sadly most are gone now). this dc "b" deadroll credit bed was used when the brokaw show originated from dc.
I like at the end after the big flock of birds fly by when, for the last, very light "DUM-DA-DUM-DA-DUM-DUM-DUM" one last bird takes off and flies across the Capitol.
When I was growing up, I used to hope every night that they'd play the long ending just like this. Seriously. And they'd only do it maybe twice a year. Thanks for capturing and sharing it!
We still get NBC Nightly News here in New Zealand. I can remember this long theme quite well...Real Clinton era, hieght of Baby Boomer power in America...Love the winter evening long shots of DC. "The Mission" theme was used by TV3 News and Nightline for some years in NZ, but it's seldom heard now. Iconic!
@AlexCherr72 hi Alex... good reply, had no idea you guys get network newcasts, esp then.. I love this theme of all the many I've listened to here in the states, sadly there is not time built in for long closes today. Even then it was rare, maybe once a week or two. Tom Brokaw was prob in the Washington studio that night. Yes, halcyon days, mid 90's... I miss them for many reasons, even if Clinton was president...
@irish89055 ...yeah same...TV3 had the rights to NBC and 'The Mission', Usually the Friday evening news got the 'long close' and in New Zealand's case, used long shot scenery of the country and the main cities, (including, sadly now, a lovely shot of Christchurch Cathedral), finishing with an ariel above cloud shot of the sun going down behind Mt Cook, our tallest...Have written to TV3 to post it up but they've lost the video.
@2000Ajjet I hope you guys have a quick recovery from the earthquake... it was distressing to see from here. I'm sure the Cathedral will be made right. Your country is lovely indeed, watched a globetrekker show the other day from NZ... best regards,

FOX news is worthless. It has nothing but whores that slept their way for those jobs esp Kimberly Guilfoyle who slept her way into law school like all hot women.
Nice video and music. What was the airdate? Looks like winter time. Must have been a slow newsday to have time to run all that. Anymore you just barely get a few seconds in before they throw in a bunch of promos.
Cory, yes, true... and it's a shame all the ads now and little time for end music. on rare nights they do a limited commerical newscast, I'd like to see an hour broadcast as this half hour is the best concentration of news, though PR pieces now dominate last half.. but the affilates would never give up Inside Addition ect.. It seems to be winter in the one shot of DC from across the Potomac river. Some broadcasts originated from Washington esp on weekends at that time.. this is 95
It had to be before they closed off Pennsylvania Avenue on May 20, 1995 b/c you can see cars driving in front of the White House from :27 to :36. And you're right on the winter too as you can see the bare trees by the Lincoln Memorial from :50 to 1:00. It could be a lot of stock footage just put together for a long closing.
1995 - those were the good ol' days in Washington.
BEST NEWS THEME EVER!!!!!! Sounds like it's from a movie. But then again it WAS composed by a movie composer (John Williams). Nice shot at the end with all the birds flying across with the final rise in the music and the one flying across at the very end and the soft melody.
I hope to one day work for network news. I have my AA in TV broadcasting but I am also working on getting my BA and I have also written and published my first book. And I'm only 26!
Hey, my dream is exactly the same! I'm studying Journalism at college but I'm just 18! I didn't write any book yet :) but I'd like to. You should share the title of your book so we can enjoy it! Cheers from Europe!
LISTEN PPL, they dont show credits anymore cuz they dont have the time...the truth is they dont have any even made up to put in. Also yes this is "The Mission" (the theme for NBC News) this is from 1995 and since then a lot has changed. AND NO IT IS NOT A UNION REQUIREMENT!!!!
@SanAntonioNews78 you said it, San Antonio..... sadly the nightly tradional network broadcasts are dying, few under age 40 ever watch...or read a newspaper..
Aussie, no the NBC Nightly news... they rarely run this much of it... got to have more commercials.. the crass part of American tv..Occasionly Mr . WIlliams can get a newscast with limited interruption..I know the Newsman want more time for news. They'd go for an hour instead of a half but the affiliates won't let them expand. Right? San Antonio News...
