I know it's a "what if", but Gretzky for one had Kurri, Messier, Coffey, Anderson, etc, etc, etc. The list goes on. Lemieux had...Rissling, Loney, oh, and Warren Young...lol. On top of that, over his career he missed some 300+ games. Had he even been remotely healthy, he certainly would've given Gretzky a run for his money without question.

please take another look at the penguins "roster" from 84-90. You can count all the hall of famers you want, and no arguement here, there were a few. My point is that in the lean years prior to the cup years, Lemieux was basically a one man band in pittsburgh and made wingers like Warren Young wealthy men in their next contract, who then went on to do zero. My arguement is that given the same circumstances and health as Gretzky, Lemieux would've at least equaled Gretzky.

None of those players were with Lemieux in his beginning years unlike Gretzky who had a HUGE supporting cast in his first few years. You're missing the point of my argument. Did anyone hear from Rob Brown after he left Lemieux's side? One on one, sorry, Lemieux was unstoppable. Figure in the 300 plus games missed due to injury, cancer, etc. Anyone could put up a legitimate argument that Mario could've caught Gretzky. But we'll never know.

All those Oilers players you mentioned aside from Messier's careers were made by Gretzky, those players never had anywhere near as big success on another team. When the Pens won the cup in '92 their top 6 forwards were Lemieux, Jagr, Francis, Joe Mullen, Kevin Stevens, & Rick Tocchet. All were multiple all-stars & 4 are hall-of-famers & some of those guy's best years were without Lemieux on their team.

So you're gonna compare Glenn Anderson, Jari Kurri, Esa Tikanen and the like to Lemieux's supporting cast when he first entered the league? Seriously?? Mention ANY PLAYER from when Lemieux first entered the league up until he won the cup that did ANYTHING, PERIOD. Warren Young? Terry Riskowski? Gary Rissling? I'm not arguing teams, I'm arguing Lemieux versus Gretzky and who they made as players. Lemieux had ZERO support early on and still dominated as a player.

You're crazy, let's be real! Gretzky has just about every record there is in hockey, has well over 1,000 points more than 2nd place all-time (1,000 points is a milestone itself if you can score that much in your career!) & has more assists than anyone else has points! (Howe & Messier played 20+ seasons & still couldnt match Gretzky's assists with pts!). I know everyone has the right to their own opinion, but I think anyone who doesnt think Gretzky is the best ever has something wrong with them!!
