Yes Carlos did play with Justin Bieber,,, I dont like Justin Bieber butI enjoyed his rendition with Carlos. Lets get real Carlos Santana is Awsome,,, He has had an Incredible musical Journey,,, who Am I to Judge. He like Jerry has a unique sound and I am appreciative of the entire body of work.
Thank you for this a supper hot show , I was at this show and i thought one day someone would put this on U-Tube.... Anymore of this show JABFEAL... Thanks for a real good show ....
This was an awesome showl in Petaluma. It was a very intimate night as I recall with no more than a few hundred people and the band rocked with Bobby Vega, Baba Olatunji, Jerry & Mickey and Carlos
this gives me cold chills, such a powerful version, So much talent and energy on one stage. Brilliant, magical, and most of all Good ole Jerry is diggin it.
I was at this show, in Petaluma Vets hall. Tiny little place and a hundred degrees inside! Hot show in so many ways, I got to meet Jerry, Carlos, Baba Oluntunji, and all the players at a meet and greet afterwards. Wow!
I'm not a Deadhead, I'm sure there have been better versions live, lost in the past, of this song. But I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better version of this song anywhere else right now..Jerry Garcia really brought everything on this performance. Like he wanted to go toe to toe with Carlos Santana. An Amazing job
man santana killed it I wish he'd played another solo right after jerry's 2nd... jer lit it up and it would have been perfect if santana just ripped one loose right after
Thanks for posting this wonderful video. I really love the late 80's, Jerry looks so badass laying it down. If the rest of the music was like this at that show, I would guess that many a mind was blown that night.
all i can add to the very long list of fans of jg.is that every time i hear his work ,either w/dead or some other incarnation......the man was and is right there in the top two both lyrically or "shredding"musically with john lennon
@kurt10063 sorry kurt but jerry was not the lyricist. robert hunter wrote the lyrics for most of jerry's songs. and yes, lennon was a phenomenal lyricist, but not much of an instrumentalist. while i appreciate your enthusiasm, but IMHO comparing jerry and lennon isn't accurate.

Hmm- We had a video feed to the sound man and to the projector guy- one of them made a copy without permission- but hey its been 24 years- I'm glad it is out there.
John McLaughlin has tons of respect for Carlos but what does he know, he's only an original fusion pioneer and fluent is virtually every style of music.
Typical Carlos bashing, yeah he's stale now but from 71-76 he was a monster. Basing your opinion just on what he's done the past 10 years or so is like basing your opinion on JG just listening to off nights where he was too fucked up. Don't you think Jerry would sound a little out of place on some Carlos arrangements? Both of them are legends and extremely talented with different approaches why make it a contest? Put down that Rolling Stone top 100 list and just listen.
I was the video engineer for this show- Recorded for KRCB TV- Heath Curdts was director- he had a huge fever that night. I am really surprised to find this online- I know that Mickey had a copy- no idea where the master went- It was on 1" and umatic with a digital audio separate recording that did not have timecode so it was hard to sync to the video.
@kerrgal U-matic is a 3/4" analog video cassette format used in broadcast and professional video up til about 1990 when it was pretty much replaced by a professional betacam format that recorded component analog video on 1/2" cassettes.
I was video engineer for this show- It was recorded for KRCB-tv Rohnert Park-

@mcdstuff Jerry's guitar is closer to an Alembic than Carlos'. Irwin got his start building guitars at Alembic. Carlos is playing his signature PRS. With everything that is going on in this jam, what I find most interesting is what ISN'T there - Bobby! I actually miss his parts in this song, though the mutual respect Jerry & Carlos have for each other is nice to see. Great jam!
