As a lifelong Giants fan who has only been alive since they moved to SF, I hate to see the loss of the NY Giants fans of both their team and the fabled Polo Grounds, which had to be baseballs greatest and WEIRDEST stadium.
What a great past the Giants have. And what a great present!
I believe the Pirates have the distinction of being the last home opponents for the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, as well as being the first home opponents for the New York Mets...twice...at both the Polo Grounds (1962) and Shea Stadium (1964).
The story is Giants owner was shown the site for Candle Stick park during the day and it was absolutley beautiful! Being from NY he had no idea how the park would be at night. Anyone from the Bay Area can tell you what it's like at night even in the summer.
The Pittsburgh Pirates played the last games at the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field in 1957. And When the New York Metropolitans played their first home game at the Polo Grounds in 1962, they played the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates closed down National League baseball in 1957 and reopened it in 1962.
@ethelmalley As you can probably tell is that I am a diehard Pittsburgh Pirates fan. I guess that after nearly 20 years of futility that's how a fan of the Pirates has to be. Have a nice day.
@billyk5775 you truly have my sympathy there ... sometimes i think the real baseball fans are those that stick with the teams that seem hardest to stick with.
@ethelmalley The law of averages has to be on the yucco buccos side. The question is when? Also when the Giants moved to SF the 2010 world series was their first world series win since 1954 when the then NY Giants were still playing at the Polo Grounds.
@billyk5775 I believe you are referring to the New York METS, not the Metropolitans, the latter a team from the 19th century. The METS are the current New York National League franchise.
have to agree with you there. one of the arguments both O'Malley and Stoneham used to justify moving was the decline of the neighborhoods around the ballparks. i can't help but think that if both teams had gritted it out, both those neighborhoods and the teams would have improved. thanks for watching!
All ballparks were urban, located in the hearts of their respective cities. Then 50 years ago the multiple-use bowl craze began, fueled by Shea Stadium and others; every team abandoned downtown for the burbs. Now, since Camden Yards went up, ballparks are urban again. The "bowls" became passé, and smaller, quainter stadiums became the rage. The Polo Grounds, like Fenway, would have gone from fashionable, to rat trap, and back to fashionable, all within 100 years. The Giants left too soon.
and whistles if they stayed. It was such a lucrative no-brainer deal for O'Malley you would think he would jump at the opportunity.
But instead he decided to be a greedy POS and start a bidding war between the New York and California developers. Each time one upping the other by offering a little more here and there. Finally New York gets fed up and I don't blame them, O'Malley was just a gold digging jerk.
@mrceebees14 have to agree with you re: O'Malley. of the three teams, the Dodgers were the most profitable and somehow that wasn't enough for Walter O'Malley. he just wanted more money. thanks for sharing your thoughts and watching.
But the Dodgers is the one that makes no sense and reaks of just plain greed. The Dodgers were very competitive in that era and would have won more championships if not for the stinkin' Yankees. Ebbets Field was one of the nicest Stadiums in the league. Their attendance was superb, nearly every game was sold out, no matter how bad the Dodgers played, the fans filled those stands back then.
There was no reason to leave, New York even offered a sweet deal on a new Stadium with all the bells
I can understand the Giants leaving New York, they were the weakest of the three at the time for a couple of reasons. Talent, they did not have a team as good as the Dodgers or Yankees. Stadium, the Polo Grounds had seen better days, it was outdated and in need of either a serious renovation or replacement. Attendance, it wasn't good league wise, and horrible when you compare it to what the Dodgers and Yankees were pulling in.
Both My Grandfathers said Baseball was great until 57. After 57 Baseball meant nothing anymore our Giants are gone. My Father's Father said the Mets are Imposters and he decided to follow no Baseball team. He passed away a few years ago in the summer of 05 and he is at the Polo grounds right now watching Hubbell and Ott Schumacher and Maniush (I Spelled it wrong) Bill Terry Dick Bartell and Roy Paramlee yea I know he is. I will one day go to the Polo Grounds myself when i leave this world
